How is the Mathematics and Computing in IIT Guwahati?

For a genuine math lover, Mathematics and Computing program at IIT Guwahati is a literal treat. You need to be proficient in Math to take up this course. The syllabus includes core math concepts combined with knowledge of CS as well. Towards the end, the math is confined to statistics and finance. The syllabus is not very flexible initially but becomes so in the last two semesters.

Here are a few pros and cons pertaining to the course

Pros:

The MnC branch boasts excellent placements second only to the CS department. The placement percentage stood at 91.94%. Out of the total 62 students that opted for placements, 57 were able to secure decent jobs. However, finance firms and banks are yet to realize the true potential of this department. One can get an INR 20 LPA by doing a decent internship and maintaining a good CGPA.
Excellent Master's opportunities are even better than CS students. This is the best option for those planning to get a master's abroad. To upgrade your CV, you can do internships and choose electives accordingly. All this will increase your chances of admission to CSE, data science, finance, and mathematics.
Job opportunities: This program has excellent opportunities in terms of jobs as well as research and many fields are open to hire students of this course.

Cons

The rigidity of the syllabus makes it the jack of all trades master of none. You cannot choose the elective according to your interest during the initial years. Many useless courses add to the overall workload with no increase in knowledge.
Those who aren’t into finance may find it difficult to cope with it as it’s impossible to drop finance courses during the initial years.

In the near future when the IT industry will be at its peak, MnC might be better than CSE in terms of monetary benefits. If you aren’t certain about your area of interest, then Maths and Computing are definitely better than all core branches except CS.

What should I choose between IIT BHU CSE and IIT Guwahati Maths and Computing?

Both IIT BHU CSE and IIT Guwahati MnC are excellent options and the choice of the branch is a personal matter depending on the candidate's preferences rather than the credibility of the branch. Here are a few parameters on which we can draw a general comparison between the two courses.

Course structure: IIT Guwahati’s MnC program has a well-structured curriculum with the perfect blend of Computer Science, finance, and Mathematics courses. By the end of the program, you will be eligible to sit for software as well as finance placements. IIT BHU CSE too is known for its flexible course structure with a plethora of electives to choose from.
Coding culture: Undoubtedly, IITBHU has a better coding culture than IIT Guwahati. The ambiance is quite competitive at BHU if that’s what you are after. However, MnC too is gaining popularity and the decreasing opening rank can be seen as a proof of the same.
Peer group: High JEE rankers prefer IIT Guwahati over IIT BHU and thus the peer group of IIT Guwahati is more refined and superior in quality.
Campus and student life: IIT Guwahati has an amazing campus and its students get to live a very dynamic and lively college life. IIT-BHU’s campus on the other hand is underdeveloped and you can also find student politics here. IIT Guwahati is the best choice for nature lovers who like solace and peace while IIT BHU is for those who want to experience city life as well.
Student life: Both institutes have great clubs and activities to promote the holistic development of students. Students are allotted single rooms right from the first year at IIT Guwahati which is different from IIT BHU. Mess food is better at BHU. IIT Guwahati is a clear winner in sports, cultural and technical clubs, etc.
Placements: Both institutes have equally good placement scenarios with major recruiters like Microsoft, Google, Tower Research, Flipkart, etc. visiting both these campuses. CS and MnC students receive similar placement offers and in fact, being in MnC makes you eligible for both finance as well as software jobs.

Both the institutes and branches have their own strengths and weaknesses and the final decision should be based on what you want from your degree. If it’s a competitive environment you are after, go for IIT BHU, while if it’s a rich college life experience you want, then IIT Guwahati is your destination.

Which is better: IIT Guwahati mathematics and computing or ECE?

I am assuming you have no specific interests and are looking for a branch that offers good job opportunities. In that case, Maths and Computing at IIT Guwahati is best. With the unique blend of Mathematical concepts and CS concepts, this program has become one of the most coveted ones only second to CSE. Indeed, MnC has an immense workload and is considered difficult but so is ECE. However, if you are not interested in Maths at all, and are a research enthusiast, Electronics is better than MnC. Electronics will give you an opportunity to explore both IT and hardware industries. However, it’s very difficult to secure internships in CE than MnC and this might demotivate you a bit.

Concludingly I would like to comment that MnC is a good option in the short run while ECE will prove to be beneficial in the long run.

Rather than giving you a direct answer, I am going to evaluate all The aforementioned institutes individually on the basis of some common parameters like placements, brand name, campus life, opportunities, and alumni.

IIT BHU ECE

Core placements are rare and students mostly build their profile for software development companies by becoming proficient in various programming languages, doing competitive coding, doing projects, and trying to build a computer science-inclined profile. A handful of students target core engineering roles.
The brand value is similar to other colleges mentioned
The campus is rather old and might disappoint freshers expecting a good college life.

IIT Guwahati ECE

Unfortunately, I have no knowledge about this Institute. However, I recommend you contact the seniors of IIT Guwahati for the same.

IIT Hyderabad Maths and Computing

Usually, MNCs attract top-tier software and financial services firms. If you are a hardworking student, it wouldn’t be difficult to secure amazing offers at top firms.

IIIT Hyderabad CSE

IIIT H has possibly one of the best computer science departments in the country.
You have to do core computer science courses right from the first year.
Many students get selected for Google Summer of Code and IIIT Hyderabad has its alumni in top-notch firms.
Being highly academically oriented, IIIT Hyderabad has minimal campus life and extracurricular activities.

Ultimately, it’s a matter of preferences and what you are looking for in your degree.
