IITH Ph.D. Physics FAQs

Ques. What GATE papers are accepted for Ph.D. Physics admission at IITH?

Ans. Candidates must qualify GATE in Physics (PH paper) to be eligible for the Ph.D. in Physics at IITH. UGC-NET or CSIR-NET in Physical Sciences is also accepted. Interdisciplinary applicants from adjacent fields may be considered at the departmental interview stage. GATE PH is the most direct path and the standard qualification for MoE fellowship eligibility at IITH Physics.

Ques. What research groups are active in the IITH Physics Department?

Ans. The Department of Physics at IITH has active groups in condensed matter physics, high energy physics, laser plasma, ultrafast spectroscopy, astrophysics, photonics, and quantum optics. Key facilities include a 14-inch optical telescope for cosmology observations, a SQUID magnetometer for quantum interference studies, and femtosecond laser setups for ultrafast phenomena. Faculty collaborate with TIFR, IUCAA, and international research institutions regularly.

Ques. Is the IITH Ph.D. Physics stipend paid from day one?

Ans. Yes, full-time PhD scholars at IITH receive INR 31,000 per month as Junior Research Fellowship from the Ministry of Education starting from the date of admission. The stipend is subject to satisfactory coursework completion in the first year. After the qualifying examination, the fellowship is upgraded to Senior Research Fellowship at INR 35,000 per month and continues for up to five years total.

Ques. What is the total fee for Ph.D. Physics at IITH?

Ans. The total programme fee for Ph.D. Physics at IITH is INR 4,08,000, comprising tuition of INR 60,000, institutional charges of INR 3,42,000, and a refundable caution deposit of INR 6,000. Which college should I choose between IIT, Hyderabad & IIIT, Hyderabad for a CSE course?

Divya SarafLives in Hyderabad

Had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad over IIT Hyderabad. While both colleges offer a good CS program, IIIT Hyderabad is the clear winner when it comes to CS. Consider the following points of comparison

  • IIT Hyderabad is a new IIt, so choosing it just because of the IIt tag would be a blunder.
  • IIT Hyderabad is still in its development phase and its campus still needs a few more facilities to become full-fledged operating.
  • IIIT Hyderabad has a better religion and brand name among the IT giants and therefore its placement scenario is way better than IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is well-known for its achievements in competitions like ACM ICPC and GSOC.

I have my cousins in both the institutes and from their discussions I have concluded that IIIT Hyderabad leads in CS opportunities.

What do you know about an all-course M.Tech at IIT Hyderabad?

Vinisha Vasudevan
Shruti AgarwalStudied at Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH)

My friend has completed All-course MTech at IIT Hyderabad and claims that it has zero recognition outside IIT Hyderabad with a dearth of job opportunities. The course is a one-year program that does not require you to write a thesis/research. All you need to do is study courses in the classrooms. This is a very poor choice for those targeting a Ph.D. as this program isn’t known even at other IITs.

You will be given alien treatment and will end up wasting Lakhs on a useless degree. The majority of the IIT Hyderabad community is unaware of this course. The curriculum is poorly designed and very rigid. The world is intense, sparing you no time for extracurriculars. The majority of the first batch left the course within a few days.

The course is a complete waste of money and time so I am strongly against anyone joining it.
