IIT Hyderabad Ph.D Mechanical Engineering: Fees 2026, Course Duration, Dates, Eligibility

Ans. IITH does not publish a fixed minimum GATE score for PhD admission. Shortlisting is based on combined performance in GATE, the departmental written test, and the interview. A strong GATE score in the ME paper improves the chances of clearing the initial screening. Candidates with high GATE scores are given priority for the Ministry of Education fellowship allocation.

Ans. Yes. All full-time PhD scholars at IITH receive a monthly research assistantship of INR 31,000 as Junior Research Fellow, upgraded to INR 35,000 as Senior Research Fellow after two years. This fellowship is funded by the Ministry of Education and continues for the full duration of the programme subject to annual satisfactory progress reviews by the thesis committee.

Ans. The minimum duration is three years, including coursework and thesis research. Most scholars complete the programme in four to five years. The maximum permitted duration is six years, and an extension beyond this period may be granted with valid justification and approval from the doctoral committee and the Dean of Academic Affairs.

The MAE department at IITH covers thermal and fluid engineering, aerospace engineering, robotics and autonomous navigation, additive manufacturing, composites and manufacturing, and applied mechanics. Active collaborations with DRDO, ISRO, Honeywell, and Boeing give scholars access to funded research projects and specialised testing equipment at the departmental labs.
