IITH Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering FAQs

Ques. What GATE score is required for PhD Mechanical Engineering at IITH?

Ans. IITH does not publish a fixed minimum GATE score for PhD admission. Shortlisting is based on combined performance in GATE, the departmental written test, and the interview. A strong GATE score in the ME paper improves the chances of clearing the initial screening. Candidates with high GATE scores are given priority for the Ministry of Education fellowship allocation.

Ans. Yes. All full-time PhD scholars at IITH receive a monthly research assistantship of INR 31,000 as Junior Research Fellow, upgraded to INR 35,000 as Senior Research Fellow after two years. This fellowship is funded by the Ministry of Education and continues for the full duration of the programme subject to annual satisfactory progress reviews by the thesis committee.

Ques. How long does it take to complete the IITH PhD in Mechanical Engineering?

Ans. The minimum duration is three years, including coursework and thesis research. Most scholars complete the programme in four to five years. The maximum permitted duration is six years, and an extension beyond this period may be granted with valid justification and approval from the doctoral committee and the Dean of Academic Affairs.

Ques. What research areas are available in the MAE department at IITH?

Ans. The MAE department at IITH covers thermal and fluid engineering, aerospace engineering, robotics and autonomous navigation, additive manufacturing, composites and manufacturing, and applied mechanics. Active collaborations with DRDO, ISRO, Honeywell, and Boeing give scholars access to funded research projects and specialised testing equipment at the departmental labs.

Ques. Can I apply for IITH PhD in Mechanical Engineering without a GATE score?

Ans. GATE in the ME paper is the standard qualifying requirement for PhD admission at IITH. UGC-NET and CSIR-NET in relevant subjects are also accepted. In specific cases, outstanding candidates from recognised premier institutes may be considered at departmental discretion, but GATE-qualified applicants receive priority for the MoE research fellowship.

Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for PhD scholars at IITH?

Ans. Yes. IITH provides on-campus hostel accommodation for PhD scholars at the Kandi campus in Sangareddy, Telangana. Hostel and mess charges are billed separately from the programme fee. Which college should I choose between IIT, Hyderabad & IIIT, Hyderabad for a CSE course?

Divya SarafLives in Hyderabad

Had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad over IIT Hyderabad. While both colleges offer a good CS program, IIIT Hyderabad is the clear winner when it comes to CS. Consider the following points of comparison

  • IIT Hyderabad is a new IIt, so choosing it just because of the IIt tag would be a blunder.
  • IIT Hyderabad is still in its development phase and its campus still needs a few more facilities to become full-fledged operating.
  • IIIT Hyderabad has a better religion and brand name among the IT giants and therefore its placement scenario is way better than IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is well-known for its achievements in competitions like ACM ICPC and GSOC.

I have my cousins in both the institutes and from their discussions I have concluded that IIIT Hyderabad leads in CS opportunities.

What do you know about an all-course M.Tech at IIT Hyderabad?

Vinisha Vasudevan
Shruti AgarwalStudied at Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH)

My friend has completed All-course MTech at IIT Hyderabad and claims that it has zero recognition outside IIT Hyderabad with a dearth of job opportunities. The course is a one-year program that does not require you to write a thesis/research. All you need to do is study courses in the classrooms. This is a very poor choice for those targeting a Ph.D. as this program isn’t known even at other IITs.

You will be given alien treatment and will end up wasting Lakhs on a useless degree. The majority of the IIT Hyderabad community is unaware of this course. The curriculum is poorly designed and very rigid. The world is intense, sparing you no time for extracurriculars. The majority of the first batch left the course within a few days.

The course is a complete waste of money and time so I am strongly against anyone joining it.
