Aims

This ÊJournalism and Culture BA at Brunel University London aims to:

  • Educate journalists and media professionals of the future who are able to communicate clearly and concisely to a range of targeted audiences.
  • Provide students an understanding of historical, sociological, political and cultural perspectives on journalism and its role in society.
  • Provide transferrable skills and knowledge needed in multi-media working environments within and beyond journalism.
  • Nurture creative, independent and critical thinkers able to adapt to future changes and challenges in their career.
  • Produce mentally agile practitioners who can use appropriate judgment and apply ethical reasoning within professional frameworks in journalism.

Employability

Our undergraduate programmes are designed to sharpen creative and analytical skills and develop confidence in working in teams and in problem-solving techniques.

You will find our journalist graduates working in top newsrooms across the globe with companies such as the BBC, The Guardian, The Independent and many more.

Aside from careers in journalism, employment in other sectors such as communications, public relations, policy, production, business and the non-governmental and charity sectors is also possible due to the transferable nature of the skills and knowledge provided.

We are highly mindful of the shortage of production journalists and will therefore be tailoring part of the programme in that direction to further enhance studentsÕ employability.

Careers and your future

Many of our graduates will be seeking first jobs in journalism, primarily in the local and regional sector in print/online and/or broadcasting. The programme will also cater for candidates seeking to enter the burgeoning periodical sector.
