Birkbeck, University of London Scholarships for UG Students
Birkbeck runs one central UG tuition waiver open to India-domiciled applicants. The award stretches across all three years of a bachelor’s degree and needs no separate scholarship form.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship (UG) | £1,000 (INR 1.29 Lakhs) tuition discount per year for up to 3 years, total £3,000 (INR 3.88 Lakhs) | India-domiciled, international fee payer, full-time UG degree starting autumn 2026 or January 2027; foundation years excluded | Auto-applied on enrolment; September 20, 2026 IST for autumn 2026 intake | Automatic on admission |
Indian applicants receive the £1,000 (INR 1.29 Lakhs) discount in each year of the bachelor’s. A three-year BSc at Birkbeck priced near £18,300 (INR 23.69 Lakhs) per year totals £54,900 (INR 71.07 Lakhs).
The waiver cuts £3,000 (INR 3.88 Lakhs) off, landing the net outlay at £51,900 (INR 67.19 Lakhs) over the full degree. The award does not combine with any other Birkbeck funding or with third-party sponsorship.

Birkbeck, University of London Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students
Postgraduate funding at Birkbeck for Indians runs through two direct routes. Both trigger without a separate form once you enrol.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship (PG) | £3,000 (INR 3.88 Lakhs) tuition discount, Year 1 only | India-domiciled, international fee payer, full-time taught master’s starting autumn 2026 or January 2027; PGCert and PGDip excluded | Applied at enrolment; September 20, 2026 IST cut-off for autumn | Automatic on admission |
| Birkbeck Global Future Scholarship | Discount that drops international fees to the UK Home rate, Year 1 only | International full-time taught master’s applicant with an unconditional offer, self-funded, no other Birkbeck award received | Auto-triggered when the 2026 offer is accepted, IST | Automatic on admission |
The two Birkbeck awards do not stack. Indian applicants must pick whichever cuts more off the specific programme fee, since Home-fee reduction saves more on high-tuition MSc courses.
An Indian MSc Data Science candidate priced at £19,000 (INR 24.60 Lakhs) saves £3,000 (INR 3.88 Lakhs) via the Vice-Chancellor’s route. Global Future drops fees to about £10,000 (INR 12.95 Lakhs), saving roughly £9,000 (INR 11.65 Lakhs) instead.
Reddit Insight: Birkbeck’s evening-only lectures let Indian PG students hold weekday paid internships in central London, offsetting rent. The 20-hour weekly work cap on a Student visa still applies.
Check the current programme cost on the Birkbeck fees page before choosing which waiver to prioritise.
India-Specific Scholarships at Birkbeck, University of London
Birkbeck reserves one South Asia umbrella award that includes India. The Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship covers Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Vietnam under a single scheme.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship (South Asia) | UG: £3,000 (INR 3.88 Lakhs) across 3 years; PG: £3,000 (INR 3.88 Lakhs) Year 1 | Ordinarily domiciled in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan or Vietnam; international fee payer; new student status | Applied on autumn 2026 or January 2027 enrolment, IST | Automatic on admission |
The award prioritises new students paying international fees. Indian applicants on the standard Student route visa qualify if they meet the full-time enrolment condition.
Reddit Insight: The Birkbeck International Excellence Scholarship (up to £5,000) explicitly excludes India-domiciled applicants. Indians should skip that 2,000-word statement and focus on the Vice-Chancellor’s route, which lands automatically without a form.

Birkbeck, University of London PhD Scholarships
Birkbeck offers six direct PhD funding routes plus UK doctoral loans. Most cover UK-rate fees only, leaving Indian applicants to close the international fee gap.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bonnart Trust PhD Scholarship | Fees at Home rate plus stipend; international applicants pay about £35,000 (INR 45.31 Lakhs) fee gap over 3.5 years | PhD research in diversity, belonging, minorities or social justice | Tentative January 31, 2027 IST for October 2027 start | Separate application with a research proposal |
| UBEL ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership | Full fees at UKRI rate plus £20,780 (INR 26.90 Lakhs) annual stipend | Economics, health, psychology or social sciences PhD; international share capped | Tentative January 12, 2027 IST | Separate application via the UBEL portal |
| BBSRC LIDo Doctoral Training Programme | Full fees plus UKRI-rate stipend | Biology PhD; limited international quota | Tentative November 30, 2026 IST | Separate LIDo application form |
| MRC UCL-Birkbeck Doctoral Training Partnership | Full fees plus UKRI-rate stipend | Biology or psychology PhD; limited international quota | Tentative December 5, 2026 IST | Separate DTP application form |
| AHRC Landscape Award Studentship | Fees plus UKRI stipend, arts and humanities cohort | PhD in the Business and Law or Humanities and Social Sciences faculty | Tentative February 15, 2027 IST for October 2027 start | Separate AHRC application |
| Sasakawa Japanese Studies Postgraduate Studentship | Value varies by cohort year, tuition partial cover | Taught or research degree in Japanese studies | Tentative March 31, 2027 IST | Separate application via the department |
UKRI-linked DTPs limit international awards to 30% of the annual cohort. Indian PhD applicants should apply to two or three DTPs at once to widen the funding window.
The Bonnart route is the most practical Birkbeck-only PhD scheme for Indians in sociology and politics. The ~£35,000 (INR 45.31 Lakhs) top-up must be self-funded, so a supervisor endorsement lifts shortlisting odds.

External Government Scholarships
Two UK government funders back Indian master’s students at Birkbeck. Both cover the full international tuition and add a London-weighted living stipend, closing the funding gap entirely.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chevening Scholarship (India) | Full tuition, monthly London stipend, return economy flight, arrival grant, visa cost | Indian citizen; 2 years work experience; UG degree; three unconditional UK master’s offers by mid-July 2027 | October 6, 2026 IST at 04:30 for the 2027/28 intake | Chevening online portal, then interview shortlist |
| Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship | Full tuition, £2,000 (INR 2.59 Lakhs) monthly London stipend, return flight, study travel grant, child allowance if applicable | Indian citizen; first degree at 2:1 honours minimum; demonstrable financial need | October 20, 2026 IST at 20:30 for the 2027/28 intake | Nominating agency route via the Ministry of Education SAKSHAT portal |
Chevening funds one Birkbeck taught master’s per selected candidate. Applicants must hold three unconditional UK master’s offers by mid-July 2027 to keep the scholarship active.
Chevening’s package for a Birkbeck master’s typically includes:
- Full international tuition, approximately £19,000 (INR 24.60 Lakhs) for a taught master’s
- Monthly stipend rated for London, covering rent, transport and living
- Return economy airfare from India to London
- Arrival allowance and visa fee
Commonwealth applicants channel through the Indian nominating agency, not the university. The £2,000 (INR 2.59 Lakhs) monthly London stipend typically covers Bloomsbury-area rent, transport and a modest food budget.

Birkbeck, University of London Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum scholarship funding an Indian student can stack at Birkbeck?
Ans. A Chevening or Commonwealth award covers 100% of international tuition plus a London stipend. The package can hit roughly £43,000 (INR 55.67 Lakhs) once tuition, £2,000 monthly stipend across 12 months and flights are added. Birkbeck’s Vice-Chancellor’s award cannot stack on top of Chevening or Commonwealth funding, since third-party sponsorship disqualifies the internal waiver.
Ques. Do I need a separate scholarship application to receive the Vice-Chancellor’s award?
Ans. No separate form is needed for Indians. Birkbeck applies the award automatically at enrolment for India-domiciled candidates holding a full-time UG or taught master’s offer at the international fee rate. You only need to submit the standard admission application on time.
Ques. When should Indian applicants apply for Chevening alongside Birkbeck admissions?
Ans. Submit the Chevening online form by October 6, 2026 IST for the 2027/28 cohort. Start Birkbeck admission by December 2026, targeting at least one unconditional master’s offer before Chevening’s July 2027 conditional deadline. Interviews run February to April 2027 in Delhi and Mumbai.
Ques. What academic score do I need for the Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship at Birkbeck?
Ans. Birkbeck does not publish a GPA cut-off. Meeting the standard course entry requirement of a 2:1 UG degree, roughly 60% in an Indian bachelor’s, is sufficient. The award is not competitive, since it applies automatically to every eligible India-domiciled offer holder.
Ques. Does the Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship cover living costs in London?
Ans. The scholarship covers tuition only. The £3,000 (INR 3.88 Lakhs) applies to Year 1 fees, not accommodation or food. Bloomsbury-area rent alone runs about £1,200 (INR 1.55 Lakhs) monthly. Most Indian PG students cover living costs through the 20-hour weekly Student-visa work allowance, which fits Birkbeck’s evening class schedule.
Ques. Can Indian applicants apply for the Birkbeck International Excellence Scholarship?
Ans. Birkbeck rules out India-domiciled candidates from both autumn and January cycles of the International Excellence Scholarship. Focus instead on the Vice-Chancellor’s route, Global Future Scholarship or the external Chevening and Commonwealth funding covered above.

- Syllabus - felt a bit redundant since we had already covered a lot of these topics in my undergrad
- Some of the professors - preference thing probably but some professors were not good at lecturing.
- Little to no social events

- I got the Vice Chancellor scholarship, which is granted to every international student for 1500 pounds. I am not aware of any other scholarships other people may have gotten since for my course we don't have a ton of international students. The vice chancellor grant was 1500. For PhD students there is the Commonwealth scholarship but i am not aware about the reward amount
- I had a friend living in London so i moved with him and 1 more roommate into a 3-bedroom apartment. we found the place on Spareroom. Monthly rent is 800 pounds, all bills included. I am not sure but if people can afford it, then student accommodation is usually the best. My accommodation is about 40 mins away (20 mins walk to the nearest station and 23 mins by train).

- Everything was very good. I came here for exposure and I did achieve that. Meeting with people from all over the world and even the faculties made the learning different.
The University of London is one of the renowned colleges in London getting into this college was one my dreams and it came true when I completed my master's in management at the university.
