At The University of Hull studying the BSc Operating Department Practice (Hons) has been designed with a predominantly clinical focus in collaboration with local NHS trusts and Hull is one of a select few higher education institutions offering ODP at degree level. Operating Department Practice students spend 60% of their time caring for patients before, during and after surgery on clinical placements; and 40% studying on campus.
ODPs predominantly work in the operating theatre environment, although their transferable skills, knowledge base and expertise are utilised in a broad range of critical care areas such as intensive care units or on resuscitation teams. Through the academic dimension of the course, you will gain key, valuable theoretical skills which you will apply in a working environment.
Practice is an integral part of the programme and will be assessed during placements. While on clinical placement, you will be taught and supported by experienced practitioners, with time also set aside for study. Placements are undertaken within Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust, York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and North Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust.
Future Prospects
A career in operating department practice is exciting, rewarding, challenging and demanding with many varied opportunities for personal development and role diversity. Operating Department Practitioners have the opportunity, post-registration, to develop their careers in specialist clinical settings. Opportunities also exist for work within the independent health care sector or overseas.
The perioperative environment is dynamic and in line with the government agenda 'New Ways of Working'. Once you have gained sufficient education and clinical experience you may wish to consider the extended roles of physicianÕs assistant (anaesthesia) or surgical care practitioner.
Further opportunities exist within the healthcare sector including management and educational roles.
