The Ph.D. in Engineering and the Built Environment at Anglia Ruskin University (School of Engineering and the Built Environment) enables you to conduct original and impactful research addressing urban sustainability, infrastructure resilience, and engineering innovation. Supervised within established research groups—Built Environment Futures, Engineering System Design and Transformation, and Sustainably Resilient Infrastructure and Communities—candidates explore themes like smart cities, adaptive reuse, urban ecology, mechanical systems, and socio-technical resilience. As part of the Future Cities Research Network (FCRN), students collaborate with academic, industry, third-sector, and public-sector partners, treating end users as active participants in research design. Ph.D. candidates are encouraged to engage in multidisciplinary seminars, workshops, and practical training, supported by professionals across fields such as civil, mechanical, medical, and telecommunications engineering, as well as planning and architecture. Entry requires a Master’s degree or equivalent in a related discipline, and the programme is offered full-time over 2–4 years or part-time over 3–6 years, with multiple start dates (January, April, September). Additionally, a Professional Doctorate (DProf in Science & Engineering) route is available for experienced professionals continuing in practice.
