Course Curriculum

10

  • The Course curriculum was a mix of theoretical and Practical. The theoretical part was a bit challenging for me.
  • The practical part was very interesting and appealing to me.
  • Usually, there are about 4 classes scheduled, from 7 - 9 in the morning to about 2 - 5 in the evening
  • The average number of students in my class was about 50.
  • My course had around 10 - 15 Indian students enrolled.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to the following universities:
    • City University, London - Unconditional Offer Letter - Accepted
    • Queen's University, Belfast - Rejected (Merit-based)
    • University of Surrey - Unconditional Offer Letter - Accepted/Admitted
    • University of Southampton - Unconditional Offer Letter - Accepted
    • The University of Edinburgh - Conditional Offer Letter - Accepted
    • King's College London - Unconditional Offer Letter - Accepted
    • University of Warwick - Rejected (Merit-based)
  • My experience at the University of Surrey has been an eye-opener and amazingly life-changing.
  • Overall, I think cybersec at this university is much better than most other universities. Compared to other colleges, this one had the most versatile and practically focused syllabus for Information Security. Also, the college fees were reasonable compared to those of other colleges. My favorite was Prof. Robert Granger, who gave me good guidance throughout the course of my master's degree and was my dissertation supervisor as well.
  • You get a good experience of student life as well; there are many student communities for a wide range of activities. Also, if you opt to stay at the on-campus student accommodation, you get to connect with a lot of like-minded people.
  • Overall, I personally had a great experience while at UoS.
  • The admission process was very simple, just apply on the University website, upload relevant documents, wait for a few days to receive a verification phone call from the University, receive your Unconditional Offer Letter after all documents are verified and you pass through the universities standards/parameters. Finally, after accepting the offer and paying the standard advance fees, your spot at the university is secured.
  • For this University and most others in the UK, IELTS is the most accepted exam. I had scored an average of 8.5 in my IELTS exam. The minimum score required was 7.5 or 8, i guess.
  • Personally I had a very smooth and relaxing admission process.
  • September Intake. It is the best intake for UK and the most popular one. It gives you the perfect time to schedule everything and be prepared to start your academic year.
  • My admission process took about 2 months. Applying to the university and uploading documents took about 15 days. Receiving an offer letter took around 15 more days. Next the student accommodation application and the Visa process took around 1 month.

Faculty

10

  • There were about 6 professors for my course. So the faculty-to-student ratio was around 1:8.
  • The quality of education was exceptional and highly dedicated.
  • The teaching methodology was really good, in spite of half the lectures being held online due to the pandemic rules enforced.
  • There were separate, dedicated sections of faculty for placement management.
  • My favorite professor was Mr. Robert Granger from my course, who was also my dissertation supervisor. He has always supported me throughout my course and is a highly knowledgeable and wise professor.

Campus Life

10

  • 2 campuses
  • Stag Hill Campus - Main campus area with the major business and IT lecture buildings as well as student accommodations of Bands A, B, and C.
  • Manor Park Campus - 2nd campus area with the medical and veterinary buildings, as well as the Surrey Sports Park and major student accommodations of Band D, E, and F.
  • I was assigned to the Manor Park campus, which is a newly built campus with much more amazing architecture.

Part Time Jobs

  • Many students secure Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), or Departmental Assistant (DA) positions on campus. It all depends on the students' capability to go forward, talk and engage with the faculty, present their skill set and experience, and just keep a positive attitude towards learning and assisting.
  • The pay range varies from 10 to 15 pounds per hour for such positions. There are other on-campus jobs, such as a part-time barista, and such.
  • Students typically earn about 8 to 10 pounds hourly for a part-time job. Securing a part-time job is easy, just roam around the town centre and look for hiring boards outside cafes, retail shops, or any other outlets.
  • Just go inside and hand over your CV/Resume, and they'll keep it on record and call back if selected. Just keep a cheerful and positive attitude, and you'll definitely land a part-time job at any cafe as a barista or a waiter, or at any retail grocery or clothing shops as a team member. The maximum hours allowed on a student visa are 20 hours per week.

Placement

6

  • The University of Surrey has a dedicated section for such employment services. It is called Surrey Pathfinder, which students can use to find and land full-time jobs after their graduation.
  • Students in my program were earning around 20000 - 30000 pounds annually as a base salary for a new hire, depending on the skill set and experience of the applicants. Students even directly apply on the company websites for their required job roles. Major companies that hire students are Deloitte, Amazon, Google, etc.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I had opted for student accommodation. It was just absolutely amazing. I felt like living in a five-star hotel for a year. My flatmates were all so friendly and awesome. I had applied for the accommodation on the university website itself, and I had chosen Band D (Ensuite) as my preferred accommodation.
  • I got my room assigned at the Manor Park Campus, which was beautiful and the exact location I wanted to live in. All the facilities, like laundry, game room, sports complex, kitchen, and everything was included at the Manor Park accommodations. Just that it was a 15min walk from the main stag hill campus. But even that wasn't a problem since the local stagecoach buses used to go from Manor Park to Stag Hill and even beyond to the town centre. My living experience was just perfect and memorable.

Exams

  • Required Exams and relevant documents for the application process
  • IELTS
  • SOP (Statement of Purpose)
  • LOR (Letter of Recommendation) - 3 (Can be academic or professional)
  • Updated CV/Resume
  • Academic/Extra-curricular certificates
  • Phone Call Interview - A designated staff member from the University of Surrey had called me for a phone call interview, a few days after the application was submitted. It was a general interview that required me to describe myself and my academic as well as professional/extra-curricular experiences.

Fees

  • Fees Structure
  • Tuition - £21000 yearly (Mine was a one-year course)
  • Accommodation - £1500 - Quarterly (Depends on the Band you choose) - I chose Band D, which has an en-suite bathroom attached, while the kitchen is common among 5 to 6 flatmates.
  • Monthly expenses - around £400 to £500 (Depends on your lifestyle)
  • Transportation - £1650 yearly stagecoach pass (Bus)
  • Trains - £20 to £50 tickets depending on where you're travelling.

Scholarship

  • Yes, I received a £1000 scholarship for my course.
  • It was an Indian Bachelor Student Scholarship, the eligibility criteria was a Bachelor degree in B.E. or B. Tech. with a CGPA of 7 or more.
  • Some of my batchmates had taken student loans for their fees. Many others received the scholarship that I received, as well. On average, I am not sure about the exact number of students receiving a scholarship.
