Likes
- Campus is so pretty with modern infrastructure
- Fee structure is affordable
- The Classroom are well equipped
Dislikes
- I do not have any dislikes about my university to be honest but still I will try to answer some of the least liked things about my uni.
- There is Indian dominance, although it is good to have it but sometimes it changes into politics which I didn't like
- Everyone thinks BCU is the University of Birmingham which are two different universities.
Course Curriculum
- My course was difficult to be honest, as it required a lot of research and learning skills. It was a mix of both Practical and theoretical.
- I felt some of the subjects were not required. Apart from that I liked all other aspects of my course.
- Classes were usually 3 days per week- Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Admission Experience
- I applied for Coventry University and Birmingham City University. I got both offers but I had to go with Birmingham City University. Apart from that I also applied for Australia "RMIT" but got rejected due to my academics score and my IELTS score. Furthermore, I have also realized that it's expensive compared to the UK. That's why I turned towards the UK.
- I chose Birmingham City University and accepted the admission due to the location, the infrastructure and most importantly course structure. I applied through consultancy. They have taken all my academic certificates, IELTS, Funding documents and asked me to write a Statement of Purpose which was a very important step to get an admission. Overall it was easy and I got an unconditional offer letter from Birmingham City University.
- Eligibility - IELTS - 6.0, Academics - 60 percentile and Funding should cover all the fees and 9 months worth of stay in Indian rupees it was around 20 lakhs.
- They also gave me a scholarship of 1.5 lakhs.
- The admission experience was very nice and easy. I thought the VISA process would be a little difficult but it went smoothly.
- I applied in January 2019 intake. I wanted to do a masters as soon as I finished my Bachelor degree which ended in May 2018.The process only took 15 days. First day I approached consultancy, and they took all the documents required, Since I was taking a loan from bank to cover all my expense, they gave a letter format in which it required Bank Managers signature and approval stamp and asked me to submit SOP " statement of Purpose " which it took 2 days for me to finish. Once all the documents were ready, they sent all the documents to the university.
- After 1 week I got an offer letter and then to apply for a visa, I had to pay 1500 pounds before they gave the CAS certificate which was required for only technical courses and was a mandatory document in the VISA checklist. I paid the amount in 2 days. They released the CAS certificate and I had to take a Tuberculosis test. Once I had all the documents from the checklist I applied for a VISA. I got a VISA in 1 week as I applied for a fast forward request. Paid extra bucks for that.
Faculty
- Faculty - student ratio was like 10:1. The average number was 30 students in my class. About 8 Indian students were also enrolled.
- The teaching approach was very new and it took some time for me to adapt due to the language, As the pronunciations are different. But I was fortunate enough to quickly adapt the whole scenario around me.
- We have dedicated computers and all are researched based approaches, we learn by researching.
Campus Life
- My university has 3 campuses, in nearby locations in Birmingham.
- They have all the faculties such as Library , Sports center and Medical services.
- They have cultural events every Friday and Saturday where mostly students from different countries join. There is a separate student union to which an Indian is the president. I also worked as Student ambassador for over 6 months there at Birmingham City University Student Union.
Part Time Jobs
- There is a number of 1:100. I don't know the pay but basic pay would be around about 36000 per annum.
- On campus jobs would be Student Ambassadors, Photographers and librarian jobs. They usually pay up to 15 pounds per hour. Maximum hours of work allowed is 20 per week.
- Due to the location, it was very easy for me to find a part time job. We have to make a CV to Uk standards and start applying. Minimum wage was about 8 pounds per week, every year it "increases" 0.50 pounds.
- It was easy for me to secure a part time job in less time. We have to look for job postings, attend interviews and we need to have a National Insurance number which is a NI number and it is a must to have. We have make an appointment to get NI number for that Address proof and university ID card required.
- I found so many on campus part time jobs there. I also worked outside the campus at Subway. There's a limit on hours of work per week.
Placement
- No idea. As It was Covid time, all the classes were online.
- The average salary ranges from GBP 27000 - 32000 per annum. Everything needs to be through Reference or networking. Jaguar Land Rover and Bosch were the major companies which hired graduates from my program 'Masters in Automotive Engineering".
- I do not know anyone who secured a job due to Covid everyone went in different directions.
Accommodation
- I have opted for Off campus accommodation as it was affordable and I found it through an app which I do not remember the name of.
- The monthly rent was 600 pounds including all the bills.
- I was lucky to find a landlord who helped me. My house was about 5 miles away from the university.
- Indian students mostly reside in Coventry, Solihull, City Center.
Exams
- Exam - IELTS
- Documents - All the academic documents, semester wise documents from the Bachelor degree, Statement of purpose, CV and Bank sanction letter signed by Bank Manager.
- There was no interview taken at that time frame. I also feel lucky, they only took biometric and passport with all the documents and I received my passport and Biometric Residence Permit card when I got my Visa stamp.
Fees
- Entire course "Tuition" fee was 14000 Pounds.
- My accommodation was outside the campus in a really nice neighborhood "Quinton" about 5 miles away from the University. I have a good transportation facility every 5 mins. I pay about 600 pounds per month including all the bills.
- Transportation was about - 50 pounds per month "student pass" where you can travel unlimited across Black country and West Midlands. Such a saver for me.
- Affordable shopping centers were mostly ALDI, Costco. But I always used to go to Sainsbury's and ASDA as they were near.
- Gym membership was 24 pounds per month. They also have 12 pounds per month too.
- Groceries were about 30 pounds per month.
Scholarship
- Yes I received a scholarship for my course as I met all the eligible criteria. The amount was 1500 pounds, which was around 1.50 lakhs Indian Rupees. Yes, all my friends received from India, as everyone got unconditional offers from the University.
- There is no specific number to be honest, but about 50 - 100. It felt like a first come first serve type of model. as we apply in the beginning we might get it.
Disclaimer - scholarship is only for those who get unconditional offers, not conditional offers
