What Students Say
Likes
- Big Campus and amazing infrastructure
- Friendly professors and batch mates
- International exposure, meeting people from all over the world
Dislikes
- Super cold weather, especially during winters
- Less lectures, for some subjects it was once a week
- Too much emphasis on self learning and minimal classroom teaching
Course Curriculum
- On a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate the difficulty level as 3. It was more practical and less theoretical.
- Most positive aspects is the modules being offered, we can be selective enough and can have a specialisation if the modules are chosen right. Negative aspect would be that the classes for certain modules were very less, once a week.
Admission Experience
-
I applied to 5 universities in total:
- 1. University of Leeds: shortlisted and Unconditional offer
- 2. University of East London: shortlisted and Conditional offer
- 3. Nottingham Trent University: shortlisted and Unconditional offer
- 4. Durham University: shortlisted and Conditional offer
- 5. University Of Surrey: shortlisted and Unconditional offer
- I chose the University of Leeds because, first of all, it was an unconditional offer; I did not have to go for any English exams (e.g., AT, GMAT, IELTS) since I had working experience of 3+ years, and the modules offered in the program were very closely related to the specialisation I was seeking.
- Overall admission experience was very smooth; I had to upload all my education and graduation certificates, and I got an offer in just 3 days.
- I applied for the September 2022 intake and the factors that influenced my decision were the modules being offered for the program and the city of Leeds itself, which is not an expensive city of be in as compared to London or other cities in the UK.
- The admission process took 4 weeks after I made the payment for the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). I got the CAS letter in a week, following which I arranged all the funds required and filed for my visa.
Class Schedule
- Usual timings for classes are from 9 AM to 6 PM.
- Some days we used to have 4 lectures, while on some days it depends on the schedule and the modules chosen.
- The average number of students was 60 and 20–30% were Indian students.
Faculty
- Faculty to student ratio was less, one or max two faculties per module were there. Tons of lab assistants and teaching assistants but few professors.
- The teaching method was presentation based. No course content prepared for securing job, no placements.
- No faculties helped in finding full time or part time.
- No faculties I admire because most of them just used to deliver lectures without detailed explanation because the masters program emphasized on self learning.
Campus Life
- Just 1 campus, in the city of Leeds.
- Facilities include 4 big libraries, one of which was open 24*7, all sorts of sports, including American football, rowing, basketball, skating, and much more.
- Major Christmas festivals were all white people festivals, including Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and we had a grand freshmen week full of events and parties.
- All cultural events were organised by clubs and communities, including Guru Purab, Diwali, Holi, and much more.
Part Time Jobs
- Very rarely masters students secure TA, RA, or DA jobs.
- I was selected as a graduate research assistant but it was unpaid as the project did not had funding so I cannot comment on the pay range.
- Other oncampus jobs were working in the supermarket Co-op store or working on the campus cafe corners for a payrange of 10-11 GBP per hour.
- Maximum hours of work per week allowed was 20.
- It was very difficult to secure on-campus part-time jobs.
- From part-time jobs, students earn 10-12 GBP per hour. It was a bit difficult for international students to secure part-time jobs. The usual process for applying for part-time jobs was through Indeed or other job portals or typically careers sections of employers. Steps include was crafting a resume for part-time jobs, applying and then submitting and then attending interviews and proving your right to work.
Placement
- As far as I know people from my circle, 5-10% of them were able to secure jobs within 6 months of completing the course.
- Average salary from my programs was around 45,000 GBP.
- Students have to apply online through LinkedIn, Indeed or other careers sections from Companys website, attend networking events which in some cases leads to getting interviews. No placement was offered in my uni.
- Major companies my batch maters joined was Santander Bank, Sainsbury's
Accommodation
- Off-campus accommodation.
- I found it through the university website.
- Monthly rent was around 500 GBP, and facilities were a personal room, shared kitchen, and toilet. It was a gated community, pretty safe.
- I did not face any challenges for securing accommodation because for international students, the university guarantees accommodation.
- My accommodation was a 15-minute walk from the college campus. Most of the Indian students stay in shared accommodations for saving on rent and also enjoying the company of people from their country.
Exams
- IELTS are required, but it was not required for me; I got an unconditional offer.
- Statement of purpose and 2 academic letters of reference from professors are required along with the CV.
- There was no interview required for the application process for me, mainly because I had working experience of more than 3 years in the relevant field for the course I applied to.
Fees
- The tuition fee was 25000 GBP for the entire course in 2022.
- Fee was charged semester-wise.
- The hostel fee and rent were 6,000 GBP for the entire year, paid in 3 equal installments.
- Monthly expenses came around 200 GBP, which only includes food.
- 100 GBP for additional personal expenses per month, and that differs based on an individual's spending behaviour but overall for food and rent it was 600-700 GBP per month.
Scholarship
- Scholarships are available for early applications; since I made my application very late, I did not get any scholarship.
- Some of my batchmates got scholarships of up to 2000 GBP but again, the requirement criteria is still unknown to me. International students get more scholarships compared to home students. For the school of computing, there is an excellence scholarship and the conditions are that the fees should be self-funded by the individual and they should have excellent academic records and skills.
