Course Curriculum Overview

3

BA.LL.B is a professional degree course. The course is actually consist of two degrees, BA and LLB. The syllabus completes a vast field of various statutes. There are various applications of the statutes in professional world. The curriculum makes forge a student into a proficient lawyer. But every coin has two sides. The syllabus covers a lot but the authority doesn't update the syllabus thus it losses it's relevancy in different places. The legal system is changing frequently to maintain it's relevancy but the syllabus doesn't update at all. There are many topics which are not so much relevant in the daily situation. Yes, it is obviously necessary to gather knowledge from depth but it becomes quite useless in the real life sceneries. The Evidence act, Interpretation of statutes, Jurisprudence are the hardest part of the course in my opinion. Some topics are quiet difficult than others but not as hard as the mentioned topics.

Fees and Financial Aid

Shyambazar Law College only offers B.A.LL.B. course in their institute. I took admission in this college in October 2021. The fees data given below is according to the fees which I was asked for at that time. Total fees of my college is 2,75,000 INR. They charged 25000 INR for infrastructure development, library and other benefits. The tution fees is 25,000 INR for every semester. There are 10 semesters in this course. So, (25,000×10=2,50,000) INR for the tution fees of the ten semesters and 25,000 INR for other charges. Therefore, Total course fees of my college is 2,75,000 INR. Obviously, as it is a private institute the fees structure changes in one year or two. There is no such fees quota for SC,ST or OBC students. The college doesn't provide any scholarship for it's students but there are various government scholarship programs by West Bengal govt. which can be applied though the college. Suppose, a student can apply for SVMCM scholarship online by filling the form and give the copy of the application to the college. The college assists the students in the process and submits the forms directly to the scholarship authority. Students get an aid of INR 12000 per year.

Campus Life

4

There are two college campus buildings which are 10 mins walking distance away from each other. The buildings are not too big. The classrooms are small. There are no AC or projectors in the classrooms. But the college rooms are very neat and clean. There is a very big park near the college named deshbandhu park. Students go there in the off periods. There are various cultural programs organised by the college authorities. The overall college life is decent. One can not get the bollywood style college life as the expect. But a student can enjoy a college life in the heart of North Calcutta where the heritage of real Calcutta is preserved in the bricks of those buildings.

Admission

The admission process in the Shyambazar Law College is very simple. Give admission test and get selected. The college is affiliated under the Calcutta University. There is a annual admission test host by the University. After the examination the marks are calculated and then the counselling process starts. I got my admission in the college by taking part in the counselling process. I kept this college after the government colleges. I chose this college because the transportation system is very good. The metro is only 5 mins distance from the college.

Faculty

Faculty members of the college is very good. The Teacher-In-Charge ma'am is very good and maintains the college very well. The teachers of the college are also very good. The student - teacher relation is very much friendly in nature. Students can freely asks their problems and the faculty members clears every doubts and problems of the students. The faculty members are very much friendly in nature. A student can approach them with any doubt at any moment. We really enjoy every classes taken by the faculty members. There are 10 semester exams. The exams are taken around every February-March or June-July months. The external exams (also known as semester exams) are conducted with full marks of 80 marks. These exams are taken by the Calcutta University under which the college is affiliated. The rest 20 marks are given by the college faculty. This is known as internal exam.

Placement Experience:

Every course enjoys placement facilitis from this university except the law department since the law students need to clear the All India Bar Examination in order to get the license to practice in courts. The course subjects as well as the teachers prepares us for these kind of AIBE or Judiciary exams.

Eligibility begins in the final year, when many high court chambers of Kolkata comes and recruit students of our university. Besides that corporate houses like the ITC, the Sanjeev Goenka Group and others have also been a partner of college for several years now. Salary offered isn't that Impressive but the number of students getting placed is as 70% students do get placements.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Law as a course has developed throughout the years and there are only a few shortcomings in the studying aspect of it. Law, in a broad sense, can be applied to almost each and every problems that citizens of India face, be it corporate law, criminal, civil law. In an even broader sense, there is Constitutional law. A major fault in the teaching and course is the excessive teaching of landmark judgements and lesser number of moot courts which in practice might land young lawyers in trouble coming from the judiciary since they're just too much aware of different landmark judgements but not the cases/context behind it. Mainly, four exams are held which concern the actual marks- Internals and Externals. First internal and external is typically held on January or February and Second internal and external during July or August.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I chose this course because I believed that I had the necessary skillset required for this course and wanted to get better at those. Law is a very interesting subject and it has always piqued my interest so it was quite easy for me to choose it. The faculty-student ratio is good enough for the subjects taught each semester. For example, for a section of 60 students, each subject has an average of 2 teachers. Some important subjects mainly the law subjects have 3 faculty. All main faculty have a PhD degree in their fields and the assistant professors or the other faculty have varying qualifications from PhD to Masters in their fields. The exams are held very timely, for law we have 2 exams one is a short exam called the CIA (Continuous internal assessment) and the end-semester exam. They were of moderate difficulty but ultimately if one followed the words of the faculty like gospel then the exams were easy enough.
