Likes
- Academics. Silicon is very strict when it comes to academics. We have regular classes and proper attendance is maintained. Faculties are quite dedicated and do anything in power to make their students understand the subject matter.
- Extra-curricular activities: Silicon promotes extra curricular activities, it often conducts events to promote the all round development of its students. Sports, cultural, photography, there's always something for everyone here.
- Campus: The campus is extremely beautiful. With trees all around, well-maintained streets, Silicon has one of the beautiful campus in Bhubaneswar. Proper sanitation and cleanliness is maintained in the campus. Everyone can chill in the campus.
Dislikes
- Canteen Food: Silicon can greatly improve the canteen food. The food lacks taste though proper quality and sanitation is maintained in the canteens, they can improve the taste. Also they need to change the menu in some intervals.
- Rules: There are a lot of rules which can be made a bit lenient for the students. The institute is stricter for everyone so they can remove some rules.
Course Curriculum Overview
I opted for Computer Science and Engineering because I was interested in coding and core subjects. We are taught about networks, computing, ai, ml, web development and programming languages. They prepare us for real-world problems. We make projects in the lab which helps us to build our resume. We are taught from powerpoint presentations and we have hybrid labs where we carry our laptops and use them. DSA is taught which is one of important subjects for computer science students. We have 2 exams every semester. One is mid-sems and the other is end-sems.
Internships Opportunities
In Silicon after the end of 6th semester, companies visit for Practice School, a 6 month internship program where they take in students for internships. The stipend ranges from 15000 to 30000 based on location. We can do PS either during our 7th semester or 8th semester. Some students don't go for PS and they make a major project in their 8th semester.
Placement Experience
For campus placements students are eligible after 6th semesters where companies visit for internship and placements. We get placements offer from Accenture, Capgemini, Wipro, Infosys, IBM, Haber, HP Labs, Surya Software, Aptus Data Labs, Scaledge, Tata Powers, Squbix and many more. In 2024 the highest package was grabbed by a student from Flipkart which was 32.5 LPA offcampus. Average package is about 5 LPA, which again differs year to year. Percentage of students being placed is more than 80%. After degree I would like to work in a web development role.
Fees and Financial Aid
Year-wise fees is approximately about 200000 including hostel and tution fees. And we pay an amount of 5000-6000 for mess food. 150000 for tution fees and 33000 for hostel fees including electricity and water. Additionally we pay examination fees of 3000 every semester. And we pay for the summer course of about 5000-7000 every year which is conducted by the college. We have different clubs and societies who have their own membership fees. We have cafeteria where we can have our snacks using our ID cards and pay anytime, it has a limit of 1000.
Campus Life
We have 3 main cultural events around the year. Zygon which is the annual cultural fest, Rhythmnova which is the musical festival, Cultural Night which is done for the hostel students. We have a library where we can issue a book for a semester or for a fortnight. In classroom we have projectors for powerpoint presentations and we have hybrid labs where we carry our laptops to work on. We have a club dedicated for the sports enthusiasts. We have basketball court, badminton court, football court, open air gym, etc. We have many clubs like meta academics cell for writers and readers, entrepreneurship development cell for budding entrepreneurs, cultural society for dancers and musicians, photography club for those who capture moments.
Hostel Facilities
In hostels we are alloted rooms. We have 4 wardens to take care of us in girls hostel. There's a Faculty-In-Charge to manage the hostel. We are provided drinking from aquaguard. Cleanliness is properly maintained as hostels are cleaned on a daily basis excepts on Sundays. About Meals, the food isn't tasty, they can improve on that aspect. We have two canteens one is for vegetarians and other is for non-vegetarians. Registration is done at the start of even semester and we are charged a total of 33000 including electricity and water.
Admission
I chose this college over other college because of its location. Silicon is located at the heart of Bhubaneswar, midst of all companies. I got a seat in VSSUT, Burla in eee. But I wanted to study computer science and as well as location mattered to me so I came here. In Silicon admission is done through the JEE Mains rank. For Odisha students, we do it through OJEE. To be eligible, one must appear JEE Mains and get a good percentile to be in Computer Science Branch in Silicon.
Faculty
There are about 160-170 faculties. Everyone is approachable and always eager to help the students. Be it hackathons or any college events they guide us thoroughly and through out. They solve our doubts and encourage us to participate in hackathons and events. Every student has a faculty advisor who are like our guardians. They take care of students when we are sick. about exams. We have total 8 semesters and 2 exams per semesters. One is mid-semester and one is end-semester.
