What Students Say
Likes
- Excellent faculty who try their best to make subjects clear. Well experienced.
- Good infrastructure compared to govt colleges
- Good hospital facilities, pretty high patient load compared to other govt colleges.
Dislikes
- Poor college life. Not much of a campus. No particular events. Monotonous life.
- Ragging used to be an issue at the time of admission, and for our batch, even now, ocassionally. Things are changing now.
- Mess quality is getting worse day by day. But overall, its pretty average, not horrible.
Course Curriculum Overview
CBME is a Competency Based Medical Education based curriculum, which focuses not only on making medical graduates with bookish knowledge, but also emphasises on making them competent enough to thrive in the competitive world, and be at par with the foreign medical graduates from the developed Western countries. There is a lot of emphasis put on how to deal with real live scenarios, communicate with patients, identify the right and treat in a patient-oriented rather than a paternalistic manner.
Internships Opportunities
Internship of one year within the campus. Compulsory rotation in every department gives an overview of the entire hospital and helps improve experience and shape further life choices. Internship can be tough, with long shifts and rough schedules.
Fees and Financial Aid
Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College, Kolenchery (MOSC) is a private self financing medical college. So, the fees is definitely higher than it's government run counterparts. The tuition fees for the general category as well as the All Christian minority reservation is around 7 lakhs per year, which is not including the special fees which is around 50k and the hostel fee which is around 28k-50k depending on the room size opted for (triple to single rooms are available in the hostels). The students mess currently charges 4k per month. There is also a 10k security deposit for both hostel and the mess, seperately. There is no scholarship as such for general category or AC reserved students, however, there is some fee concession for SC/ST categories of which I don't know the details. The NRI quota fee is around 25 lakhs per year along with all yhe ither fees mentioned above. The fee structure is decided by a special state commission, and it increases yearly.
Campus Life
• There is an annual Arts Festival held around June every year. • There is both an academic and literature library with extensive collections of textbooks, latest medical journals etc. • Every classroom is equiped with smartboards with internet facility alojg with the traditional black or white boards for teaching. • There are sports activities, though not much. Students do take part in Zonal competitions and win medals. • There are a few clubs, though, apart from the social media presence, they don't really affect student life much.
Hostel Facilities
• Triple room, 3 people in a room, three beds without mattress, 3 cupboards, shelves, tables and plugpoints. 2 fans, 3 tubelights. • Student run mess with non veg meals almost every day. Food is not very healthy, and the repitition makes it tiring in a while, but food is not bad, can be adjusted. There is a lack of fruits and vegetables in the menu which is sad. • Hostels are pretty affordable and everh student has the opportunity to avail hostel facilities
Admission
• I applied to CMC Ludhiana, where I did get an allotment in the first round of counselling itself, but I did not take it as the college is situated very far away from home, considering the cultural and language barriers. • I had hopes of getting into Amala Medical College, Thrissur, but the third round of allotment was cancelled for those who already took admission so I couldnt make it there. • Admission is solely based on NEET UG examination and KEAM allotment. The admission procedure is mostly online, and really smooth.
Faculty
• Faculties are pretty good, experienced and knowledgeable. Considerably good faculty to student ratio. There is a lot of attention, especially in the pre and para clinical departments. There are quite a few approachable faculties. • Most faculties are good in terms of knowledge and experience • There are few faculties who arent really approachable, consider themselves very senior. • There are 3 sessionals (Part Completion Tests) and 1 university exam each year. Its pretty difficult to pass, and there are quite a few failures each year. The course curriculum is pretty relevant considering how important the profession is.
Other Applied Colleges
