Course Curriculum Overview

5

My course is FASHION COMMUNICATION which is basically all about UI/UX design, Graphic designing etc. Since childhood I've been a tech savvy kind of person. I like to explore different applications and thus this course allows me to work on application like FIGMA, ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR, PHOTOSHOP, etc. So nift has jury every semester and whatever work we've done so far is presented there. The panel doesn't judge us on their level rather on industry or company levels. We're taught from day one that you are not working for faculty rather consider us clients and work according to our needs. The semester consists of mid term, end term and jury assignments and i think the difficulty level varies from person to person. For me, it gets a little hectic during jury as it is the last chance for us to present something out of the box product and for that it needs high level of thinking and exploration and completing that within the given deadline becomes a task.

Internships Opportunities

4.5

College usually provides internship opportunities by themselves in third year but one can always do themselves. We get messages from various organisations for these type of opportunities in our official group, one of them being MYCAPTAIN. They offer a variety of courses to enhance our skills and then we can get started with internships. Since most of our faculty has great connections with industry they also help us in getting some work and experience. Just for the experience I did internship in NGOs like- MUSKURAHAT FOUNFATION with a stipend of 1,000 for a month- I was a crowdfunding intern, PEHCHAAN THE STREET SCHOOL- doesn't offer any stipend- a content writer.

Placement Experience

4.5

When you are in year 3(internships or placements both) or 4(placement) then you're eligible to work in industry. Accessory design is the best department in our campus (gandhinagar) and thus highly reputated companies hire them. So there's a kind of series that is followed that companies first gives preference to DELHI and MUMBAI and then other campuses. As far as my department (fashion communication) is concerned they're mostly given opportunities in retail companies for example- a VISUAL MERCHANDISER in WESTSIDE. Last year GANDHINAGAR was number one in placements with a package of 9,00,000/- Marks or CGPAs matters at the end but a good portfolio matters alot in designing college. Right now I have just completed first year so I have this much information only regarding placements. My plans would be ofcourse to sit for placements and get hired in a good comapny. After getting enough money for my masters I shall go abroad for masters as it builds a good portfolio and even more better job

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions

Since I belong to general seat thus there is only one scholarship availabe at present but for that we've to show our parent's income less than 1,00,000. For OBC, ST, SC our college provides a number of scholarships through government. There are mentors which help you at every step from filling the form to checking all certificates and documentation work, they are there to assist you. Desigining is a bit costly course everywhere and thus fees is bit high but if you are someone who belongs to OBC,ST,SC group then you can avail scholarships. This year my batchmates were offered 3,00,000 rupees along with some additional amount which keeps on fluctuating. Nift gives first year preference in this type of situation.

Campus Life

5

So our annual fest name is SPECTRUM which includes various events to showcase our talents. Fest is usually held around march end or april. It also gives a chance to showcase the outfits that has been made by our creative fashion designers with proper styling and props. Every book related to our work is available in the library. Library has air conditioners so that there is absolute comfort while we work in silence. Regular sport matches are held (basketball/volleyball) with different colleges in our college. Every year different clubs forward google forms for new members to take part in their respective clubs like ENVIRONMENT, LITERATURE, DANCE, SKIT etc. The dance club is called by the name IMBUE and skit club as MANDALI. It is truly amazing to see how students balance their life with work along managing clubs. Every morning around 5-6am Mandali practices their voice modulations and then from 9 am classes commences.

Hostel Facilities

5

In our campus there are no ACs in the room but we've on common room where ironing table, 2 microwave, 2 washing ,machines,1 Tv and 1 fridge is provided and everything works fine. Hostel washrooms are regularly cleaned. It has 2 blocks- NARMADA and TAPTI. Both of them have ground, first and second floor. Each floor has 3 bathrooms including 3 washrooms and 3 bathing areas. Every floor consists of 18 double occupancy rooms. Rooms are provided with one cupboard, one table, one shelf and one bed. Mattress you have to bring on your own. There are 4-5 single occupancy room but for that charges will be higher. Around 80,000 rupees are charged per year with 5,000 security deposit. Mess food is good they make variety of food every week and whatever food is left they keep a track of it. They also write the amount of food wasted and number of people that could have been feeded.

Admission

Every year the forms are released around september/october. Nift consists two rounds- CAT(drawing) and GAT(general aptitude) and once you clear these two round they conduct a last round called- SITUATION TEST( where they provide materials and topic on the spot and you have to make model right there at NIFT centers nearest you). Anyone who has completed their 10+2 can give the test Its a 4 year course for bachelors (B.Des) and 2 years course for masters (M.FM/M.Des). You have to give test for both. If you're an artisan you're given the top most priority. I think the only thing that they can improve is in making their website better as it has been legacy that is still continuing- when the results are out the website hangs and then it takes 1-2 days to get it fixed then they release the results again.

Faculty

5

The faculty tries to bring their industry experience and expertise together into the classroom. Students get a hands on experience by learning real techniques from artisans themselves as NIFT focuses alot more on promoting local artisans and crafts. Faculty appreciates those ideas more which are taken from our surroundings or nature as they want us to become a close observant. They dont really care about what the final product is rather they are more interested into the thoughts or brainstorming that has been done behind the product. They are not at all into perfectionism instead how much we explored, did we step out of the campus and interviewed people is what they all care about. Nift is a place for all open minded people and that makes our faculty very friendly. We are given full freedom to think into various aspects. Faculty provides us with their industry connections for our placement and internship opportunities too. Our campus was first in placements last year (9,00,000/-).

Course Curriculum Overview:

Nid follows a old style curriculum which has its own pros and cons. Here we prefer sticking to the basics in the beginning we believe in building our base rather than rushing. We imply more of practical knowledge rather than theoretical basically we experiment live with our ideas a lot and we are allowed to explore anything that we are interested in

Placements are provided by the college. The placement plans of the college are steadily improving, especially for design programs. The placements for the students start in the 7th semester, and the whole 8th semester is for a proper project with your company after placement. Many internship opportunities are also provided by the college

Placement Experience:

The placements at my college to be very honest with you are not as great especially if you consider the fact that you're spending so much money in the college fees. So NIFT has a centralized placement system where it is only held in the top 5 colleges and the students from the other nifts have to go there for theirs. From what I've heard and read the placement are always pretty disappointing and bad. Many students end up not getting placed or taking up offers thag are not fair for the amount of time and energy you've put into into it. The biggest con of joining my college is infact the placement as many people don't consider it a good investment for it's bad returns.
