Entrance Preview
I come from a small coastal town, Pondicherry which is just 3 hours of a travel by road to Chennai. Since I wanted to study in a bigger and metropolitan city, I chose to study in Chennai, also because it was closer to where my family used to live at that point of time. M.O.P Vaishnav was one of the best Arts and Science Colleges in Chennai at the point of time, and it still is, so I decided to take up my science under graduation from here.
Course Curriculum Overview
It was very comprehensive and gave us a clear insight into everything that encompasses electronic media. It gave us a clear idea as what we wanted to focus on for our higher studies. Having been introduced to almost all branches and subjects of electronic media, even during a later stage in your career, they come in handy whenever you need an extra edge over your colleagues.
Internships Opportunities
No, our college does not provide internship. Not at least during the times when I was a student. I keep visiting my alma mater every once in a while and haven't heard them have any internship programs in the recent times either.
Placement Experience
There is no separate placement cell as such. But we were given some basic soft skills training. We were exposed to a lot industry experts. There were a variety of workshops and seminars conducting that taught us a lot of tricks of the trade and how there is a myriad of difference between the bookish classroom knowledge and what is being practiced.
College Events
Our college was known for the events that were celebrated through the course of the year. We had several events back to back that it becomes hard to keep track of all. There were several committees and clubs that organised some or the other event and the campus abuzz all the time. Each department had a timetable of events and there were several departments. So one can only imagine!
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure used to be on the average-high end during the times I used to study. But now I hear, it hasn't raised much and owing to inflation, it only seems to fallen into the affordable category these days. Also, the strength has increased several fold. They have several batches and a lot more classrooms now.
Fees and Financial Aid
I have heard of scholarship programs. I'm sure they are still in practice. But i have availed none and am not aware of any who had availed them.
Campus Life
It was an all-women's college. So all of them were girls. Even the faculty were all women, with exceptions to faculty from the industry who teach part-time. The college was known to encourage extra-curricular activities, and it still does. We had a lot of avenues and events that helped us showcase our talent, however varied they may be.
Hostel Facilities
There is no hostel facility in the college. Although, when I was a student there, there used to a boarding facility offered for students taking special coaching for sports. Since they required full-time physical activity and special care taken to their dietary needs, the management had made special arrangements to accommodate only those taking special sports training.
Alumni/Alumna
We had a strict anti-ragging policy and it was being very closely monitored. I have never heard or witnessed any ragging-related issue so far. We had friendly bullying which later blossomed into a great bond between the seniors and the juniors.
Exam Structure
The exam structure was simple. They followed the University pattern and timetable, since my batch was under the University's control, although we were in the campus of a private institution. We had models and internals that prepared us for the main semester exams. The models, if taken really seriously relieves a lot of pressure off the university exams.
Admission
I was asked to appear for a common entrance test. Once I cleared the entrance test, we were called for a face-to-face interview. During the interview, I was asked several questions that tested my interest and enthusiasm in taking up the course that I had opted for. We were also asked to submit a portfolio of all the cultural and academic work that we had done so far. I carried with a portfolio of all the non-academic and academic accomplishments I had accumulated until that date and showed it to the the interviewer.
Faculty
We had a good mix of teachers, from the ones who had Ph.Ds to, faculty from the industry, who were working professionals taking a hour or two off their busy schedule to teach the real-industry techniques. We also had the freshly graduated teachers which helped bridge the age-gap between the students and the teachers. We were most comfortable in discussing our issues and concerns what so ever it is only with these young teachers.
