My college journey

IIMC is a professionally run, well managed institute with its reputation intact by producing finest journalists in India.

PG Diploma in Journalism, English language, my scores were average, barely passed. I chose journalism as I was really interested in it, news and current affairs was best known thing to me.

When I passed out, it was quiet a comprehensive course, relevant to those times. Digital journalism/new media was non-existant, so the subjects too were not there. Since the college had resources, practicals and other non-academic activities were in abundance.

This institute promotes campus placements and campus interviews, yes a students gets ample opportunities for internships. The internships are generally unpaid.

During the year, I passed out, almost all the students were placed well before the final results were out. The Pioneer was being launched in Delhi and most of the students were placed. TV was in infancy, five students went to TV news. Placement have become more professional in recent times.

Since it was not a very big institute, with total number of students not more than 500 (at that time), not many cultural events were organised in the institute campus. However the students were encouraged to visit other cultural events, especially those organised at the Jawahar Lal Nehru University.

Since this was a government-funded institute, the fee was very reasonable, it was a mere 2000 Rs per semester. There used to be fee for other things including hostel accommodation and mess charges. There were further concession for students for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes.

Since the college fees was already very low, It did not provide any further facility, however there were a lot of concessions for SC/ST students.

For a post graduate course, the campus life was quiet easy, the classes were held from 10am till about 430pm. Debates were a part of curriculum, this was frequently organised. Since there was a limited number of students, the scope for events like cultural societies etc was limited.

The institute did provide hostel facilities but they were very limited, the rooms were available on sharing basis, since IIMC is located close to the Jawahar Lal Nehru University, a lot of students could find accommodation. I do not have any information as to what is the present status.

Yes there is any alumni of senior students, It has its annual events and several other events throughout the year, yes its helpful as, it provides a connect between students and former members.

Exams were more of an academic affair, we used to have practicals, for eg making a newspaper page etc. The entire curriculum was spread in two semesters, with practical at the end of both the semesters. Special emphasis was on practicals. Exams were not frequent as the emphasis was on gaining knowledge.

It was thorough a competitive examination, which is generally conducted in the month of May. This exam is of about three hours duration and has all the relevant questions including general knowledge, current affairs, writing skills etc. All India level, and later an interview.

One of the best faculties for journalism, in terms of experience, methods and detailing. Guest faculties used to be the top most editors of dailies, politicians and other news personalities. One of the best faculties for understanding libel and legal journalism. Jaishri Jethwani, Prof Jangid used to be one of the best in their fields.
