Entrance Preview
For the admission to the MSc Biotechnology program, I appeared in the Combined entrance examination conducted by the Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) new Delhi. Based upon my score in the entrance test and my preferences for the course offered by Goa university, I got admission. I scored fairly well, I was the topper in my goa university batch (I could not know what score other 180 selected students got ).
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum was among the most rigorous curriculum and probably the best among all the options available during that time. We had altogether a different subject dealing with the various aspects of marine sciences (Physical, Chemical and biological oceanography, aquaculture, sea ranching etc) apart from the regular biotechnology courses offered by most of the universities including JNU.
Internships Opportunities
Yes, throughout the Master's course we received a regular stipend sponsored by the department of biotechnology, Government of India. The amount was not that high but was enough at that time since it was apart from the regular fee waivers. we had subsidised food and accommodation also that time.
Fee Structure And Facilities
For the MSc biotechnology program fee was nominal since it was subsidised and sponsored by the department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The annual fee was approximately 10000, I don't remember exactly but it was not more than that. The hostel fee was also less than 5000 annually.
Fees and Financial Aid
I was offered the scholarship from the department of Biotechnology government of India through Jawaharlal Nehru university (JNU) combined entrance examination. Probably the scholarship is recently discontinued though not sure.
Campus Life
Campus life was absolutely amazing and probably the best. Goa university campus has almost all sort of things and ingredients to have unlimited fun.It is very close to a beach and has a lake in close vicinity. It has an amazing library facility which is open round the clock. This is also probably the first university which has more of the girl's students than the boys, at least it was true during my course there.
Exam Structure
We had very complicated examination pattern. Every semester (6 months duration) we had 5 to 6 papers. we had 50% of internal examination and 50% external examination. For the internal exams, we had to give two to three papers any time during the course of the semester. The marks obtained in these test were averaged and added to our final marks along with the marks obtained in external test (end of the semester exam).
Admission
Based on my performance in the CEE, my application was forwarded to the department of marine science and biotechnology, Goa university. After further evaluation my credentials, they send me an admission letter. The admission process was smooth and hassle free. I went there and met the Head of the department and showed my certificates and other documents.
Faculty
They were among the best faculties available that time. Most of the faculties have had PhD degrees from the top research institutions in India like Indian institute of Science etc. They had significant research experience both at the national and international level and have had an inclination and interest for the research and teaching.
