RGPV (Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal) semester back rules for BE/BTech:

  • semester back (year back) means you fail too many subjects and cannot proceed to the next semester/year
  • under RGPV CBCS scheme: you can carry some backlogs (failed subjects) while proceeding. typically you can carry up to 4 backlogs (KTs) while being promoted
  • if you have more than the allowed backlogs, you're detained — cannot proceed to the next year
  • you must clear detained semester subjects before moving forward
  • maximum time to complete BTech: typically 8 years (double the 4-year program)

check the specific RGPV examination ordinance on rgpv.ac.in for your exact batch and scheme. rules can differ between 2010, 2015, and 2019 scheme students. your college's examination controller will have the exact current rules.

RGPV semester back rules — this is genuinely confusing because the policy was updated in 2022 and many answers still quote the old rules.

Current RGPV semester back criteria (post-2022 update):

  • Semester back triggered when: You fail in 3 or more subjects in a semester (revised from the earlier 4-subject threshold).
  • ATKT (carry-forward): 1-2 backlogs in a semester ? ATKT status ? move to next semester while clearing backlogs.
  • Semester back means you CANNOT register for the next semester exams until you clear enough backlogs to fall under the 3-subject limit.

Consequences of semester back:

  • Delayed degree by minimum 1 semester (could be 6 months or a full year depending on exam schedule).
  • Hostel continuity may be affected — check with your college warden.
  • Scholarship: Most state and central scholarships require no semester back. A single semester back can disqualify you for that year's scholarship renewal.
  • Placement eligibility: Many companies screen for "no active backlogs" at time of joining — semester back creates a red flag even if you clear papers later.

Maximum duration: Must complete BTech within 6 years (4 normal + 2 extra). RGPV is strict about this.

Key strategy: If you're sitting on 2 backlogs entering sem 4, be very careful about semester 4 performance. Failing just one more triggers semester back under the new rules.

At RGPV, Students get a semester back, if they fail in six subjects or five subjects and one practical, in a year. Students who fail 6 subjects in the first year (including the first and second semester) are not allowed to take the third semester examination. They get a semester back. They need to clear the back subjects first.

There are usually four different conditions:

  1. The first one is the obvious i.e, not studying properly. If you will not study then you will have semester backs.
  2. More than 5 backs in one year will also lead to a semester back.
  3. If any of your first-year paper is not clear and you are about to enter the third year.
  4. If any of your second-year paper is not clear and you are about to enter the fourth year.

Study properly and try not to waste your semester.
