ATKT (Allowed To Keep Terms) rules for Mumbai University engineering (under Mumbai University's engineering regulations):

  • ATKT means you passed enough subjects to be promoted to the next year/semester even with some backlogs
  • Promotion conditions: to move from FE to SE (1st to 2nd year), you need to have cleared all FE subjects or have a limited number of backlogs allowed under ATKT rules
  • Mumbai University engineering typically allows promotion with up to 4 backlogs (KTs) from the previous year, but this depends on the specific exam scheme (2012, 2016, 2019 pattern etc.)
  • you must appear in backlog subjects while studying in the promoted year
  • a student with too many KTs (typically more than 4) may be detained — not allowed to proceed to the next year

exact ATKT rules vary by exam scheme. check your college's exam office or mu.ac.in for the rules applicable to your specific batch/pattern. the rules changed with the introduction of CBCGS (Choice Based Credit Grade System). your college's exam department is the most reliable source for your specific case.

MU engineering ATKT rules — honestly one of the most confusing policies out there, and most online answers are either outdated or incomplete. Here's the current ground truth.

ATKT (Allowed To Keep Term) basics under MU engineering (revised regulations):

  • You are granted ATKT if you pass a minimum of 50% of the total number of subjects in a semester AND have cleared all previous semester subjects OR have a maximum of 4 KTs (backlogs) from previous semesters.
  • Under the 2019 CBCS pattern (most current batches): Maximum 4 backlogs from any combination of previous semesters to be eligible for the next semester.
  • You CANNOT appear for final year (7th/8th semester) if you have backlogs from 1st year (1st/2nd semester) pending.

What most answers miss:

  • Internal KT vs External KT: If you fail the internal assessment (term work/oral/practical), that counts as a separate KT — even if you passed the theory paper. Two separate components, two separate passing criteria.
  • Diploma holders (lateral entry): Different ATKT calculation applies — check with your college.
  • CBCS 2020 update: The "4 backlog max" was introduced then, replacing the older "2 subjects" rule. Many older answers quote the pre-2020 rule.

Practical tip: Track your KT count at the START of every semester, not after results. If you're at 3 KTs going into sem 5 and fail 2 more, you're suddenly blocked from sem 6. Plan exam attempts accordingly.

According to Mumbai University ATKT rules, engineering students are allowed a maximum of 5 end-semester and 3 internal KTs. Including end-semester and internals, you can have a maximum of 8 KTs in the first year.

You need to clear your first-year KTs by the end of 2nd year, i.e. 4th semester. Students aren’t allowed to carry any first-year KT to the third year. Even if you clear all first-year KTs by the 4th semester except 1, you have to take a drop. It is the golden KT rule.

Mumbai University is an esteemed university providing exceptional courses. One of my friends graduated from Mumbai University. According to him, there are some things that are worth mentioning.

  • Generally, in Mumbai University, in your first year, you can carry up to 5 ATKTs in the second year.
  • If you have ATKTs exceeding 5 then you would be required to take a drop for a year until you have cleared your previous ATKTs.
  • If your ATKTs are less than 5 then proceeding to the next year would not be much of a problem.
  • However, there is a certain rule presiding over the engineering course. If you have even 1 ATKT, as per the rule, you would not be allowed to carry 1st year ATKT in your 3rd year.

You will not be allowed to carry your second year’s ATKT in the Fourth / Final Year even though it is only 1 ATKT. The students are required to clear their Second Year’s ATKT by the end of their Third Year, that is, by their Sixth Semester.
