at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) for engineering, backlog papers (KT/ATKT) rules:

  • No fixed maximum limit on attempts for backlog papers under the CBCGS system — you can keep appearing until you clear
  • however there is a maximum duration rule: you typically have twice the normal program duration to complete all subjects. for a 4-year BTech, you have up to 8 years from enrollment to clear all papers
  • backlog papers are conducted along with regular semester exams. you don't need to re-enroll in the semester — just appear in the specific backlog subjects
  • after the official program duration ends, an extension may be granted on application, but this varies

practical note: the longer you carry backlogs, the harder it gets to prepare alongside current studies. clear backlogs as quickly as possible — most students who clear all KTs within 1-2 attempts avoid major career delays. check your college's exam section for the specific rules applicable to your admission year and exam scheme.

SPPU's backlog exam policy is actually more student-friendly than most people realize — here's the full breakdown.

Number of attempts for KT (backlog) papers at SPPU Engineering: There is NO limit on the number of attempts. You can appear for a backlog paper as many times as needed until you clear it, within the maximum study duration.

The critical constraint is the time limit:

  • BTech (4-year program): You must complete ALL subjects within 6 years from the date of admission (4 years normal + 2 extra years).
  • If you exceed 6 years: You cannot appear for SPPU exams anymore and the enrollment is cancelled. You'd need to re-seek admission.

KT exam windows: SPPU holds backlog exams twice a year (typically Oct-Nov for odd semesters, April-May for even semesters). So if you fail in May, you can attempt in November — roughly every 6 months.

What many students miss:

  • KT in internal (term work/oral): These are conducted by your college, NOT the university. Different process — you contact your college's exam section. Most colleges offer internal KT attempts once per year.
  • ATKT eligibility: You can move to the next semester while carrying KTs, but only if you meet the semester ATKT criteria (passing 50% of subjects in that semester).
  • 6 years sounds like a lot, but if you're accumulating 3-4 KTs each semester, it adds up fast. Start clearing backlogs in Year 2 itself.

Being a student of Savitribai Phule University Pune University, you can appear for backlog exams at a maximum of 3 times for the odd semester exams, while it is 2 in the case of even semester exams.

For instance, if you have a backlog subject from the 1st semester, then you are permitted to sit for the exam as per the following data,

  • 2nd semester of 1st year.
  • 3rd semester (Or in the 1st semester Of 2nd year)
  • Lastly, for the 4th semester (or the 2nd semester of 2nd year)

Similarly, when shifting focus to the even semesters, you can appear for backlog exam in the 2nd semester of 1st year, with subdivisions as mentioned below,

  • 3rd semester (Or the 1st semester of 2nd year)
  • 4th semester (or the 2nd semester of 2nd year)

Clearing the backlog should however remain your primary option on the first go.
