What is IIM Shillong's overall cut-off?

YR
Yash Raj Posted On : February 12th, 2024
Studied at IIM Shillong

At present, the overall CAT cutoff at IIM Shillong for general category is around 90 percentile, and the sectional cutoff is 75 percentile. This is just the minimum required percentile. The call is received by candidates who have a strong academic background other than a good CAT result. The next steps after the CAT exam are WAT and PI.

For the final shortlisting after PI round, IIM Shillong assigns 30% weightage to CAT score, 40% to PI score, 10% weightage to work experience, and 15% to class 10th and 12th score. You can check the 2023 CAT sectional cutoffs for various categories at IIM Shillong.

Should I join IIM Shillong? How good is it compared to other older IIMs, especially for finance?

KN
Kedar Nath Posted On : January 16th, 2023
PGDM from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (2019)

You are asking whether you should take it or not so I will assume that you are planning to take a drop year otherwise. However, preparing and attempting CAT again is not a cakewalk. It requires a lot of determination and motivation and still does not guarantee that you will get a call from an old IIM.

IIM Shillong is rather a good choice for finance. You can contact some of its alumni to get more information on the same. Since your profile is good, Indore is also a good option for you.

But if you are adamant about joining the old IIMs, then focus on one single goal. Getting maximum percentile in CAT. Start preparing as soon as you decide to drop the year. Anything above 99.7 will guarantee you a call from one of the older IIMs. I have seen many people attempt CAT 3-4 times just to get into their choice of IIMs.

It all comes down to your determination. Like I said, dropping a year requires a lot of determination, so choose this path wisely. Else consider the various other options you have.

If IIM KI is 8/10 (ABC being 10/10) where does IIM Shillong and IIM Trichy stand?

SC
Sarat Chandra Posted On : January 13th, 2023
Former PhD Candidate at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (2017–2020)

Here are my ratings for the IIMs

  • IIM Ahmedabad Bangalore Calcutta: 10
  • IIM Lucknow: 9
  • IIM Kozhikode and Indore: 7.9
  • Other second-generation IIMs: 7.6
  • New third generation IIMs: 6.8

The above rankings have been done on the basis of age, placements, and research. I don’t think these factors are enough to rank IIMs.

Another major parameter of comparison is the duration of the establishment.

  • First generation: (est before 1984) Ahmedabad Bangalore Calcutta Lucknow
  • Second generation: (est. before 2000) Indore and Kozhikode
  • Third generation:  (est. around 2009) - Ranchi, Raipur, Rohtak, Trichy, Udaipur, Kashipur, Shillong
  • Fourth Generation: New IIMs (after 2014) - 7 IIMs

Most of the FT rankings and online rankings are based on this parameter. In reality, every IIM has top-notch faculty, infrastructure and placements m. Yet the new IIMs will take some time to reach the top.

How good is IIM Shillong for HR?

KA
Kshitij Arora Posted On : January 16th, 2023
completed MBA in 2014

One of the major USPS of IIM Shillong is the diversity of electives it offers. Anyone who hasn’t decided on a domain can have a peek into the various angles of the business sector and then make a healthy decision.

The courses offered are flexible, comprising a blend of Marketing, HR, Operations, Finance, etc. This enables the students not to specialize in a single domain only. As far as HR is concerned, I have listed down some highlights of this particular domain at IIM Shillong.

  • IIM Shillong offers an impeccable variety of courses ranging from Organizational pathologies to HR tools.
  • The faculty includes some widely acclaimed personalities in the field. Some renowned members of the permanent faculty include Prof R.Dwivedi and Prof S.Kakoty. These professors just don’t impart HR knowledge rather they ingrain it in us.
  • The guest lectures are augmented by highly honored professors like Prof M Deshmukh. He gave an overview of the HR domain through activities like designing a dream job. He bought in specialists to teach some important fundamentals.
  • The HR clubs at IIM Shillong like UsHR keep alive the student-driven factor. The club conducts quizzes and article writing competitions to facilitate self-learning among the students.
  • You can also opt for CIS. This is a thesis you write about a suggested topic. It enhances your previous knowledge and exposes you to various dimensions of HR.

At the end of the program, you will have developed a detailed knowledge of terms, concepts and insights.

Why should I choose IIM Shillong over newer IIMs?

AB
Abhinab Bose Posted On : January 16th, 2023
IIM Shillong PGP 14-16

There isn’t any valid reason for choosing IIM Shillong over the newer IIMs. This is because their establishment time is pretty much the same and not much can be compared. Rather than comparing, I can list down some points as to why you should choose IIM Shillong

  • Despite its location disadvantage, it offers pretty good placement opportunities.
  • The faculty here is also top-notch
  • The peer group is diverse and very talented

The alumni base however is very small obviously because it’s a new IIM. I don’t see why you should go for IIM Shillong and not any other second-generation IIM. But if you compare it to the baby IIMs that have been recently established, it’s definitely a better choice

Are there any foreign exchange student programs available at IIM Shillong?

RA
Rohit Agarwal Posted On : January 16th, 2023

No, there aren’t any foreign exchange programs available at IIM Shillong. It’s a relatively new IIM and lacks in this aspect.

However, the PGPEx-MBIC program is a joint program between IIM Shillong and the Ocean University of China. Under this program, the students from IIM Shillong go to OUC, China for a period of 4 months. This is part of the international immersion, which also includes a 2-month internship in China. The course is open to foreign nationals as well.

TISS at Mumbai is a famed institute. Why should a person opt for it? What career and personal goals one should set once he/she joins it? Is this a better choice compared to IIM Shillong?

SS
Samriddha Saha Posted On : February 5th, 2021
Studied at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, (2018)

Comparing TISS with renowned B-schools such as - XLRI (Jamshedpur), IIM (Shillong) will show that it is at par with them. TISS is one of the premier institutes in the Social sciences department. TISS, as a research institute is well equipped. The graduation degree is of standard quality as well, it will be worth your time and money.

At TISS, HR is not amongst the highlighted courses. It is Social Work and other public policy and development related courses that are at the forefront. HR, as a course, is parallel to the management side of the education TISS has included it in the course list. Apart from HR, TISS also has another management program which is the Social Entrepreneurship course.

Now, let’s sum up the plus points of TISS, as the best-selected option:

NAAC Accreditation

'A' (It has been rated as the best university for Social Sciences in India)

Faculty

Best HR faculty in India; Extremely helpful and encouraging professors.

Placement Percentage (2020)

80-90%

Highest CTC

INR 32LPA. (Its recruitment standards are equal to XLRI PMIR)

Average CTC

20.60 LPA

Recruiting Companies

KPMG, Urban Management Centre, Amazon, CitiBank, etc.

Best courses

HR; MPH; MHA

TISS, when it comes to HR, is definitely a more suitable option than IIM Shillong. However, a comparison cannot be set between the two colleges, in totality. Both of these educational institutes have different specialization courses. Therefore, a common leveling ground is absent.

These are the stand-out features of TISS but a comparison with the IIMs is not justified, as they both deal with different subject matters at different levels.

Is MICA worth joining given the hike in their fees from 16.5L to 20L, and average packages standing at 12.8L? How good is it compared to SIBM Pune or IIM Shillong?

MS
Mitali Sharma Posted On : February 4th, 2021
MBA Marketing, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune (2020)

There are several factors that you should consider before deciding on a business school. Fee is one of them; though the fees you pay at any business school is not directly equivalent to the average package offered, so keep that in mind before making any decision.

Now, Management schools generally increase their annual fees by 10 to 20% every two years. For instance, in the year 2018, MICA increased their fees from Rs 16.5 lakhs to 18.5 lakhs and then last year, they increased it again to Rs 20 lakhs. Similarly, SIBM Pune increased their fees by 20 % in the year 2018. Thus, bear in mind that most business schools change their fee structure annually or bi-annually while it is a deciding factor, it is also highly common.

Tabulated below are the recent fee structure and average salary offered by the institutes:

Institute Name

Fee Structure

Average Salary

MICA

21 LPA

13.9 LPA

SIBM Pune

18.8 LPA

20.14 LPA

IIM Shillong

10 LPA

18.76 LPA

Comparison:

  • MICA is a good management school in itself but when compared to other business schools, it falls short. The college needs to work harder to establish itself as a full-fledged business school when compared to business schools like SIBM Pune or IIM Shillong.
  • The college offers great placements but the roles offered are very different from the roles a traditional MBA would offer.
  • Placement offers are mainly from the Media and Advertising field. For instance, this year alone FMCG made up 23% of the placement offers while Media and Advertising companies made up approximately 31%.

MICA is an excellent college with a unique structure; people are creative and innovative there. The college will definitely help you grow and will offer you a very different and unique experience, unlike a traditional management school. While it is a good and upcoming college; it has to work to match up to management colleges like SIBM Pune and IIM Shillong.

Can a general category student convert IIM Indore or Shillong at 92 percentile? (With a reasonably okay WAT-PI) (with good academics but as a fresher)?

MS
Mayank Singhaniya Posted On : May 10th, 2023
Studied at IIM Indore

While the selection process for admission to IIM Indore and IIM Shillong varies from year to year and depends on various factors such as the number of applicants, the quality of the applicant pool, and the cut-offs set by the institutes.

It is generally considered challenging to secure admission to these institutes with a 92 percentile in the Common Admission Test (CAT) as a general category student. But if you are from the EWS category then it is not that difficult. Also, the CAT percentile is just one of the criteria that are considered for admission to IIMs, institutes also take into account several other factors such as academic performance, work experience (if any), and performance in the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI).

If you have a strong academic record, try and perform well in the WAT-PI, and if you are able to demonstrate your potential for academic excellence and leadership, then you have a good chance of securing admission to IIM Indore or IIM Shillong.

Does the small batch size at IIM Shillong provide a considerable advantage during placements, compared to other IIMs?

SS
Subhrajyoti Saha Posted On : January 16th, 2023
PGDM from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (Graduated 2018)

Yes, the small-batch size at IIM Shillong or that at any new IIM provides a considerable advantage during placements. The older IIMs have a larger batch size therefore the competition is also tough. So an average profile will get an average CTC only. Whereas at IIM Shillong, the small batch size means lesser competition and better placement opportunities. With less talented people around, someone with even an average profile can get a high package.

The small batch size can be beneficial only if you have a decent profile. A below-average profile can not get you a good package even at a college with a smaller batch size like IIM Shill
