Which is best to pursue an MTech in ECE: IIT Bombay or IISC Bangalore?
I have a friend who is pursuing M.tech in Electronic systems engineering at IISc and a cousin who is pursuing M.tech at IITB too. So, I seem to be in the best position to compare IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore.
- Academic environment: IISc has a rich research culture and you will find both faculty and students actively involved in dynamic research projects. A total of 42 departments offer rigorous courses that challenge the researcher within you. IISc also provides excellent opportunities to pursue any interdisciplinary field like microbiology, neuroscience, nanoscience, astronomy, genetics, etc. IIT Bombay on the other hand has a laid-back culture and curriculum that is more placement-oriented. Only passionate students are motivated enough to involve in research activities.
- Placement: IIT Bombay has diverse companies visiting for placements while IISc usually has only core companies. Moreover, the students applying for placements are at IIT Bombay than IISc because IISc students prefer higher studies or research. So we can say that IIT Bombay has a more active placement cell than IISc.
- Extra-Curriculars: IIT Bombay is known for its vibrant campus life and huge events that are organized to give the students a break from academics. IISc is a bit lacking in this aspect as its sole focus is on in-depth research. However, it does have all basic modes of refreshments like Hockey, Football, Archery, Swimming, and cultural societies for Drama, Music, Photography, and Literary
- Higher Studies: Although both IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore have excellent prospects and opportunities for higher studies, it no brainer that IISc Bangalore will encourage you more for higher studies, and a Ph.D. from IISc is an excellent choice.
Ultimately, the final decision depends on what your prospects are and what you expect from your college life. If your main goal is to pursue full-scale research then IISc is the best place for you but if you also want to experience a great campus life and get placed then IIT Bombay will serve you better.

The frequent events and activities conducted on campus make life more vibrant here. The best part is that this is the only college with a private beach. You can always come here to release your stress. The campus always has a pleasant climate and also enjoys good connectivity. Mangalore and Udupi are reachable within an hour.
Placements for MTech are good, especially for branches like ECE and CSE. For other branches, the situation is not very good like any other. Additionally, there are many technocultural events for intellectual development. So choose wisely after considering all factors.
How is the life of an Mtech student in IIT Roorkee?
Usually, people who have completed their bachelor's from Non-IIT colleges join IIT for the MTech program. IIT Roorkee has a very less workload in comparison to other IITs. The M.tech in Computer Science and Engineering can be summarized semester-wise in the following manner
1st Semester
- There are 4 subjects in all
- There are two labs namely, Programming Lab and Project Lab
- Each subject has 3-4 classes while every lab has 1 period weekly.
- You will be allowed to sit for interviews for internships at top companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Flipkart, IBM, Qualcomm, CISCO, and many more.
- Thomso, the much-awaited cultural fest held during October is a very intriguing and exciting event
- There are no TA duties
- The exams are relatively easy and your semester is over once you are done with your exams
2nd Semester
- The second semester has 4 subjects with no labs at all
- You are required to conduct a Literature Review of your semester work and you will be assigned a guide from you department under whom you will be working at least 2 of the courses will have projects as well
- Instead of the cultural fest, you will enjoy a tech fest this year
- No TAs duties are assigned
- The exams are not very competitive and one can easily pass with enough preparation.
3rd Semester
- The 3 semester is the life-changing and shaping semester as you will have to start preparing for summer internships.
- Although the companies visit during Oct-Nov-Dec, the preparation starts well before summer.
- The workload is less as students are allowed to focus more on placements
- The first week of December witnessed 100% placements while some even got PPOs.
4th Semester
- This is the most exciting and thrilling semester as you get to explore new things.

Any person with an M.Tech background is pretty easily placed in brilliant companies like Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, 1mg, Flipkart, Amazon, Daily Hunt, Razorpay, Swiggy, Phillips, etc. In case you are curious even in the least bit about your CTC, you need not worry as the highest CTC went up to 34 LPA. This was grabbed by people with an M.Tech background.

What should I know about MTech life at IISc, Bangalore?
The life of an MTech student at IISc is pretty busy and challenging. Students are given broad exposure to a wide variety of disciplines. The coursework is rigorous and helps you become proficient in a particular discipline through thesis research. My sister completed her ME in Microelectronic Systems from IISc last year and shared her experience of the same.
The first semester was very challenging and tiring as she had to complete 36 credits in all. She was advised to complete 5 credits in the first semester which wasn’t easy as most courses have assignments and projects.
The curriculum at IISc is flexible and students are given freedom in course choice. So apart from the core courses, students can take courses from any department be it Genetics, Molecular Biology, or Physics.
The students are assigned research advisors by the end of the first semester so they have to get in the good books of the faculty members they wish to work under.
The campus is serene with the best amenities one could ask for. The sports facilities are also great including TT, Soccer, Cricket, Hockey, Swimming, etc. The food served is of good quality and midnight cravings are catered to by coffee shops and fresh fruit juice stalls operate really late into the night to serve the late-night cravings of the graduate students.
Her overall experience as an MTech student at IISc Bangalore was challenging and rewarding at the same time.
