I have done part time MBA from IIM Lucknow (WMP), Is it okay to apply for PGPX courses at IIM A/B/C?

SA
Sonal Agarahari Posted On : January 9th, 2023
IPM from Indian Institute of Management Rohtak (Expected 2024)

No, I wouldn’t recommend you apply for a PGPX course at IIM A B or C if you have completed a part-time MBA from IIM Lucknow. The reason is the huge overlap of electives in almost all the programs offered at IIMs. Leaving a few courses most of which are repeated in all the programs be it part-time or full-time.

Towards the end of the course, you might end up spending a hefty fee and lots of time and yet not learning anything new. If anything you might just get placed at a better firm. But that too will be useless if you are unable to harness the acquired knowledge and skills in the open market. The question is if your job will be worth your year lost, your lost opportunities, and 25-30 lakhs of loan.

Still, if you want to pursue the course go for a top MBA course abroad. That might make a difference in your resume and job prospects.

Which must one choose: M.Tech. from IIT Bombay or MBA from IIM Bangalore?

AB

Startup Enthusiast, Biker, Music Lover, Cricketer

An MTech from IIT Bombay and an MBA from IIM Bangalore are two very different options. While one focuses on technological aspects the other focuses on managerial aspects. So before even dwelling on the worth of the courses individually you should self-analyze your inclinations and choose one path you are sure about.

Jot down your short and long-term goals. What exactly are you willing to do in your life apart from earning money? Are you more inclined to the corporate world or are the technical elements that attract you more? Having clarity of goals and understanding of what you want from your life is the primary determining factor for choosing your college as well as course.

Objectively, both courses offer a plethora of job prospects and you will gain a lot by choosing any of the two. But making a wise decision here is most important. Choosing an MBA just because it has good career prospects despite having an interest in technology is deluding yourself. You cannot attain success unless you are sincerely passionate about the field you are pursuing.

I have 6 years of work experience in IT and wish to get into product management. Which is a better course to join - ISB's PGP or IIM Bangalore's EPGP

DA
Deepali Agarwal Posted On : December 21st, 2022
PGDM student of IIM Rohtak-2019 batch

There are two scenarios for product management

  1. B2B: Business to Business product management does not necessarily require MBA
  2. B2C: Business-to-customer product management is better with an MBA degree. The placements for MBA will get you a high-paying job in B2C product management. B Schools like ISB prefer a work experience of at least 4-6 years. Roles offered through placements include senior product manager to product manager.

The fact is no matter what your skills are, this industry is biased towards MBA. So the final decision should depend on what you are going for.

How good is SPJIMR's PGDM? I’m looking at the current placement records of over 26L average. Is it performing better than top B-schools like XLRI/FMS/IIM?

DS
Dhananjay Sharma Posted On : March 10th, 2023
PGPM in Information Management, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) (Graduated 2017)

SPJIMR has been among the top 5 or 10 B Schools over the past few years consistently. Its brand value can be compared to XLRI, FMS, and even IIMs except for IIM ABC. This is because even now there are some roles offered to IIM ABC students that are not offered at SPJIMR. But this is not a major issue as these roles seek only extraordinary profiles and In Fact, many other roles offered at IIM ABC are lower than average.

In SPJIMR even the lowest package is decent and the range of salary is not very broad. This year, SPJIMR's average package stood at INR 33.02 LPA.

Other key points to note in comparison to old IIMs is that our Highest CTC is lower than that of IIMs but our Lowest CTC is higher than that of IIMs. So I will suggest anyone with an exceptionally good profile to choose IIM whereas someone with a decent average profile should go for SPJIMR only. It is important to note that getting roles at SPJIMR is a bit easier than IIMs mainly because of the small batch size and less competition.

Which course is better to join, NIT Silchar, ECE, or a 5-year course of CSE at IIITDM Kancheepuram?

AB

The record of placement statistics at NIT Silchar and IITDM Kancheepuram has been relatively the same in recent years. The core recruiters who are working on AR and VR grab students from the CSE department, especially those who are skilled in coding. IITDM Kacheepuram has an added advantage for the students as they offer design courses other than core courses, which is beneficial during the interview session. IITDM is also leading in offering efficient classes, experienced faculties, good infrastructure, and hostel facilities to the students.

The final decision should be made based only on your interests.

A BMS from SSCBS is better. It offers a good return on investment. The course fee is only INR 34,565. According to the highlights of SSCBS placements 2022, the average CTC for the institute is around INR 9.26 LPA. The highest CTC offered this year was INR 21.5 LPA.

The Delhi University tag also helps a lot in terms of placements. Another advantage of doing a BMS from SSCBS is that you will get to specialize in a particular domain.

What should I take among IIT Delhi textile, IIT Kharagpur biotechnology, and IIT Guwahati engineering physics?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : April 10th, 2023

The choice of college and branch totally depends on your inclination and career prospects. Yet, a few pointers you might consider

For MBA/ non-core jobs/Startups: IIT Delhi Textile is the best choice if you are looking for any 3 of these options. Its excellent location provides enough exposure to give you access to unimaginable opportunities. Many events hosted by industry experts, CEOs of big companies, and successful entrepreneurs will give a better insight into the startup culture. Moreover, students preparing for competing exams can easily access coaching centers nearby.

Research in Biotechnology: If you are interested in research in general or Biotechnology specifically, then the Biotechnology at KGP is an excellent choice. It is one of the most demanding fields in terms of research and general growth. With a good CGPA, you can find a research internship or you can apply for MS or Ph.D. Even job opportunities are plentiful.

Campus: IIT Delhi is better because of its small size and location

Lastly, Engineering Physics from IIT Guwahati should be considered only if you are genuinely passionate about Physics and want to pursue a research career in the same. The curriculum comprises high-tech mathematical concepts and is a good option to pursue a career in economics and computer science.

Can I do only a BBA from IIM Indore and then join IIM Ahmedabad for an MBA?

AA
Aarti Ahuja Posted On : August 18th, 2023

IIM Ahmedabad or any other IIM does not consider the type of college the candidate belonged to as eligibility criteria. So rest your worries and apply for MBA in your dream college even if your undergrad BBA college was a less reputed one. Regarding your undergraduate college, the only criteria are the minimum marks for appearing for the CAT exam i.e. 50%. All you need to do is get an excellent CAT score.

To get admission to any IIM, you need to focus on things like CAT score, 10th, 12th, Bachelor grade. The school and colleges from where you acquired your education do not matter at all. What matters is that your academic profile should reflect your excellent scores and involvement in extracurricular activities

So, appear for CAT, aim a 98.5+ percentile, and get admission to IIM Ahmedabad. What’s stopping you?

Is the M.Sc (Economics) + B.E. (Hons.) dual-degree from BITS Goa a better option than CSE from NIT Surathkal?

SK
Sanjana Kapoor Posted On : September 16th, 2023
BITS(Goa)

You must first introspect if you really like coding or not. CSE is a trendy branch these days because of the high packages it offers. But those who land a job in top brands are deeply interested in, and an expert of coding. If you are genuinely interested in coding, NIT Surathkal CSE is a great option for you. It’s a good college with a good campus life.

I also pursued my dual degree with an MSc. in Economics from NIT Goa. The Economics department of my college is great. The curriculum is rich, and courses like Econometrics, MSM, Applied Econometrics, etc. are a great help when applying for placements in Analytics firms. Even for an MBA, an Economics degree is very useful. The faculty for Economics is great. MSc. Economics offers less burden than other specializations like Maths or Physics. The course offers very good electives like Security Analysis and Portfolio Management, Financial Management, etc. With a dual degree, you’ll get an extra year to choose your engineering branch.

Now if you opt for a dual degree from BITS Goa, be prepared to work really hard. The crowd is quite competitive. You’ll need to work hard to manage two programs simultaneously. The fees at BITS are quite high in comparison to NITs. NITs won’t provide you top-notch lodging and food facilities like BITS. For higher education too, the BITS tag holds more value. The curriculum at NITs isn’t as flexible as that offered at BITS.

Both are renowned colleges. You should make a choice based on your priorities.
