This is with respect to the NIRF Engineering Rankings 2023. NIT Calicut is ranked 23rd among the top 100 Engineering Colleges in India and 5th among the NITs.
But keeping the rankings aside, NIT Calicut needs major administrative reforms. Its infrastructure is not up to the mark. Some hostels have poor facilities and accommodation problems. All the departments have a shortage of permanent faculties and manage with Ad hoc faculties. There are no fresh appointments for permanent teachers. Only B.Tech CSE, ECE and EEE have good placements. PG and B.Tech core branches suffer from very low placement rates.
Thus, NIT Calicut needs some major reforms in spite of its high rankings.
There is nothing called a better college. One college can be good for you but bad for others. Similarly a college can be bad for someone else but perfect for you. Every college has its own flaws. So it depends on how much you are willing to overlook and get the best results.
Still if I have to make a choice among the above colleges, I will go for NIT Hamirpur. The peaceful ambiance and beautiful infrastructure is worth it.
If you look at all the criteria MHRD takes into consideration while ranking institutes, NIT Silchar is at par with most NITs but in terms of research, and infrastructure. The only parameter in which NIT Silchar was behind NIT Warangal was reputation and the difference was drastic. This affected the overall ranking of the institute in turn lowering the NT Silchar cutoffs.
I think the major reason behind its poor reputation is its remote location and the rumors related to it. It's falsely rumored to be in a Naxalite region and the exposure is believed to be minimal. The institute has a bad reputation, particularly in North India.
I have friends from several NITs and I have safely concluded that NIT Silchar is better than many but it's difficult to convince people of the same and the institute has a bad reputation.
To fix this problem, we need our alumni to be more active in portraying the right image of the institute. Additionally, the institute should hold more inter-college events and strive to build a reputation.
Both LPU and CGC are good institutions, but LPU has certain factors in its favor.
LPU has better rankings, infrastructure, and placements. It was established around 20+ years ago, while CGC is a newly formed institution. Because of these reasons LPU has better rankings.
LPU is ranked 50th in the NIRF 2023 Engineering Rankings, while CGC is in the 101-150 ranking list.
Companies like Microsoft, Google, Oracle, Amazon, Cognizant, TCS, Tech Mahindra, Amdocs, Capgemini, etc. visit the LPU campus each year for placements.
Thus, LPU is comparatively a better choice than CGC.
VMMC attracts a major crowd of NEET toppers. It is the most chosen college after MAMC. There are several reasons why many people choose VMMC over KGMU.
Mandatory rural service is the biggest disadvantage of KGMU. Those planning for a PG/superspeciality especially find this service period unnecessary and time-consuming. Moreover, VMMC is located in Delhi. This makes it more favorable. Though I personally feel Lucknow offers almost every facility. Internal PG reservation also works in the favor of VMMC.
KGMU is ranked much higher than VMMC. The education at KGMU is much better too. Despite this, VMMC is preferred because of the above reasons.
The first-ever ranking of higher education institutions in India namely the Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, and Universities was released on the 4th of April 2016, by the MHRD. Many claimed that the report was misleading as they did not conduct thorough research before ranking the institutes.
Firstly, only 233 out of 720 universities participated and it's highly possible that some of the major colleges did not participate in the survey. So to get an exact picture, 100% participation is a must. One of my friends told me that his institute was a tier-3 institute with pathetic teaching faculty and placements and yet was ranked under 70. This alone is enough to point out that fallacy in the rankings. He also told me that most of the duvet conducted was done with false credentials, therefore, discrediting the rankings.
The worst part of these MHRD rankings is that the accuracy and authenticity are in the hands of the institute which can be easily manipulated. Overall I believe that The National Institutional Ranking Framework is a good idea, but poorly executed because the rankings are done on the basis of incomplete data and are often manipulated. Unfortunately, many students fall trapped in these inflated rankings and end up h choosing the wrong institute.
The rankings released by bodies like NIRF are based on not one but several parameters like placements, academics, research, and campus life. So institutes are often ranked low when they fail to meet even one or two criteria.
NIT Patna has a very small campus around 40 acres, so that works against the institute's image and affects the rankings badly. The authorities had a tough time making its campus fully residential. However, the facilities are slowly being improved and new Mega Hostels have recently been constructed.
Another reason for NIT Patna's diminished image is its location amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. While most NITs are located remotely away from the haptic city life, NIT Patna’s central location is another reason why NIT Patna has not been ranked decently.
But if you look at the big picture, many bright students have been able to get placed in huge companies like Adobe, Amazon, Qualcomm, NetApp, Infenera, etc As a whole, NIT Patna is at the same level as tier-II NITs at least in terms of placement and academics.
IIT Mandi is a reputable institution with a strong focus on academics. Although it was ranked 43rd in the overall category in 2022, it's important to note that rankings can change from year to year, and they may not take into account all aspects of a university or college's performance. Additionally, opinions about the quality of an institution may vary depending on the individual and their specific experiences.
Honestly speaking, IIT Mandi is yet to establish itself and is still a baby IIT. Most of the good reviews are usually from the students of the institute itself and no outsider can confidently justify its credibility. And it is understandable since it’s a work in progress and credibility cannot be gained overnight.
The old IITs did not become what they are today just after 5-10 years of their establishment. It took them decades to make the mark and stand high among Engineering colleges. So it’s advisable you target older IITs or top NITs if possible and keep these new IITs as the last option.
Overall, it would be best if you could visit the institute and make your own assessment.
Ryerson is slowly and steadily gaining its reputation and receives an incredible amount of applications every year. It ranks #27 among the global universities in Canada as per US News and #801-1000 in the world by QS World Ranking. The university is known for having the top journalism school and recently added a unique sports media program which is the first of its kind in North America. The sports media program teaches students how to excel in sport management, sports journalism, live production, sports journalism and more.
It won’t be fair to judge it solely through rankings though- it is hard to rank because it has many unique programs. It doesn't compete with sheer talents like U&T and McGill, rather compete in their unique nature and focus of their programs. The university maintains a great reputation with the employers with its career-focused programs.
Their leading programs are in the subjects of Business, Arts, Communication and Design, Community Services, and Engineering. There are also some specialised programs only for international students with the Ryerson ESL Foundation Program.

As for the academic ranking of Ryerson, it depends upon the type of programs you want to enrol in. It is very highly regarded for programs like Nursing, Journalism, and Radio & Television Arts. THE World University Rankings 2021 by the subjects are:

Overall, Ryerson University is a potential choice if you are planning to go into journalism, technology, or MBA it is often considered on par with other universities as it has been ranked among the top 800 universities in almost every subject with an employment rate of 86.7%.
