Should I go for M.Math program at ISI Kolkata?

RP
Ritwik Patnayak Posted On : September 16th, 2021
Studies Mathematics (PG) at Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) ,Kolkata (2023)

M.Math is quite thorough in different ways, it is best not to end up opting for it without vital information. As a brief interpretation, you really do not require programming skills to further opt for the M.Math course.

  • A very intensive knowledge of linear algebra, real analysis, and basic abstract algebra is required prior to joining the M.Math course. Despite that, the course is very challenging.
  • The academic background does not necessarily affect the course you are about to take up. There are students who arrive from an engineering background.
  • It is best to go through the coursework of Mathematics and decide whether or not you are inclined towards it or not.

M.Math students usually secure placements at a variety of companies, but achieving that howsoever is extremely difficult. Thus, choose only if you are confident.

Studied at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies

While considering the worth of any program you should consider 3 factors namely curriculum, peer learning, and profiles offered. Let’s discuss M.Sc Finance from JBIMS on the basis of the following factors

  • Curriculum: The course structure is pretty good and the quality of knowledge one acquires is also decent. Experienced alumni are invited to hold sessions that explore corporate values. The teaching faculty is also learned and experienced.
  • Peer group: Only 30 seats are available for this course so only the best and the cream students are selected. This is also why the peer crowd is extremely talented and there is cut-throat competition. Good peer learning enriched the overall experience of the program.
  • Profiles: The placement opportunities are great at JBIMS and the alumni are always there to assist you. The profiles offered both in internships and placements are also decent. The students are encouraged to participate in competitions to upgrade their skills and gain exposure. Sharing the campus with MBA students adds up to the overall experience.

The Economics branch is slowly becoming one of the best branches of IIT Kharagpur. Integrated M.Sc. (5 years) in Economics opens with JEE rank 3615 and closes at 5439 as per JoSAA 2022. However, it’s not necessary to evaluate a course on the basis of its opening and closing rank because you can get your branch changed on the basis of your performance in the first year.

A student has to obtain around 8.73 CGPA in order to get their branch changed to Economics. You will have to work very hard to get a high CGPA for branch change.

Curriculum: I have entailed some topics covered over the semesters. For a detailed list, you can visit the official website.

  • Indian Economy
  • Public Finance and Policy
  • Regression and Time Series Model
  • Economics of Growth

  • Banking Theory and Practice

You can easily go for Finance and Consulting jobs provided that you study well during these 5 years. The coursework of this department is always industry relevant to cope up with recent trends.

Which is better for an MA/MSc in psychology through distance learning, IGNOU or Annamalai University?

SB
Singdha Bnerjee Posted On : March 5th, 2022
Annamali University, Tamil Nadu, India

One of my friends completed his MA in Industrial Psychology through IGNOU. According to him, it is a well-thought-out course with a term-end examination, compulsory internship, and research projects. My friend also consulted with some practicing Psychologists regarding the study material. According to them, the course is at par with the regular university courses.

The advantage of this course is that you can complete the course over a period of 5 years and examinations are taken twice each year. So, you can take examinations for 2-3 subjects each term and complete the course easily along with a full-time course or job. Study Center and Regional Center are two points of contact for IGNOU.

Lately, there have been some issues regarding RCs and teachers in IGNOU. Going forward they need to address these issues.

What is the correct ranking between IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, and IIIT Hyderabad for Masters in Computer Science?

SG
Sumit Singh Gandhi Posted On : April 28th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra India

Before I rank these institutes, I will warn you against joining IIT Roorkee for CS. IIT Roorkee is understaffed and also lacks facilities for research work. Despite being the oldest IIT, it has failed to meet IIT standards and has become a big disappointment

Only a few professors around 10 are there in the CS department and most of them are least interested in doing or promoting research work. So for research aspirants, IIT Roorkee is the last love to be.

However, if your only agenda is to secure a well-paid job, IIT Roorkee with its tag will definitely fetch you one. Many top companies offer excellent job profiles to CS students and students of these students are most sought after. Even MTech students are allowed to sit for placements.

In my opinion, the ranking should be

IIIT Hyderabad>IIT Guwahati>IIT Roorkee

How should I prepare for my interview in IISc Bangalore for the Integrated PhD course in Physics? I appeared in JAM 2016.

BG
Bidita Ghose Posted On : July 17th, 2023
Lives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

I was interviewed at IISc Bangalore for an integrated Ph.D. in Physics. Once you get an interview call, your JAM marks or rank do not matter.

You will give an interview to a panel of 5 to 6 professors, each one of whom will be an expert in their field. In the beginning,  you are asked about your UG studies and favorite topics in Physics. After this, you are asked questions and thoroughly examined.

Be very clear with the basics of Classical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Electrodynamics, and Mathematical Physics. You can be asked anything from them. Truncated Harmonic Oscillator and Finite Square Well are important topics that are routinely asked during a Physics interview.

You should accept it if you do not know about a topic or did not study it. This is because the panelists easily assess what you know and what you do not know. If you do not know a topic and the panelists are in a good mood, you will be asked to get into the ‘let’s figure out’ mode, else, they will move on to another topic.

My interview experience at IISc Bangalore was quite good. I was not selected for the iPh.D. Physics program but the interview aided my growth and knowledge. I would recommend you enjoy the interview at IISc Bangalore and also give it well-prepared.

Which course is better: IIT, Madras M.S. by research or IIIT Hyderabad M.Tech in computer science?

AS
Aditi Sengupta Posted On : March 28th, 2023
Studied at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

The MS program is solely research-oriented and has minimal research work, while M.Tech is coursework based and has very less research angle. It's up to you to decide which aspect is more suitable for you and then only choose the program.

The subject or area of your work defines your MS program because the entire research will be based on that area only. Chronologically, an MS student has to go through these

  • Choose 5 courses related to your area of work and try to complete them within a year
  • Once you are done, start your research work and publish your paper
  • Sit for placements and get placed with a good package
  • Synopsis meeting after which you have to write your these
  • You are ready to leave IIT Madras

There is no fixed duration of the degree and one can even complete it in 2 years. It all depends on your capabilities and your area of research. Some even convert their MS degree into Ph.D. after the 1st year. The faculty pool is very cooperative and guides you continuously throughout your research work. Some important research topics include

  • Computer Architecture
  • Machine learning
  • NLP
  • Speech

As far as IIIT Hyderabad is concerned, its MTech program is coursework-based will little research in comparison to MS. So make a good choice of both institute and program based on your career prospects and preferences.

How good is the MS(R) program at IIT, Delhi?

AS
Ashmita Sinha Posted On : April 5th, 2023
Masters from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

The MS (R) program offered at IIT Delhi is one of the finest courses offered at the institute. Academically, its credibility lies between MTech and Ph.D. Apart from your core courses, you can choose any course and gain additional knowledge in that field.

Research-wise, the program is very dynamic and students are as actively involved in research as the Ph.D. students. Unlike BTech and MTech, the primary focus is on research rather than academics and project work.

Placements-wise, the branch is excellent with a 100% placement percentage.MB(R) students get placed even before MTech students. Many companies offering research-based job profiles consider the students of this branch.

So be it academics, research, or placements, the program offers it all and is thus a good choice.
