Which college is better for an MBBS: the MAMC or VMMC?

SK

Usually MAMC is the first choice of aspirants. But, a good number of students choose VMMC over MAMC despite getting really high ranks, and having a Delhi state quota. The reasons for this decision are-

  1. VMMC is much newer than MAMC, UCMS and LHMC. Thus, it offers a modern and fully air-conditioned infrastructure.
  2. Workload for the first 1-2 years is much lighter.
  3. There are only semester-end exams. Despite this, the education quality is top notch.
  4. VMMC offers the benefits of an internal PG quota.
  5. The batch strength is smaller. This facilitates better interaction with peers and professors.
  6. Safdarjung Hospital has the largest OPD in Asia with a dedicated Specialized Burns Unit. So you’ll get more opportunities to learn during postings and internship. There is an entirely separate Sports Injury Centre as well.
  7. The hostels are air conditioned, and the girls' hostel has no curfew. The library reading room remains open 24*7.
  8. VMMC is located in the heart of South Delhi. The best hangout spots like HKV, Dilli Haat, Promenade are all located at a close distance. SN market and South Ex are just 5 minute drive away.

Thus, I would recommend you choose VMMC for your MBBS degree.

What is the stipend offered for a DM in neurology at NIMHANS? Their prospectus is not clear.

DS
Deeksha Seth, Posted On : September 30th, 2023
studied at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (2017)

The post-MBBS neurology course is taught by a Junior Resident for two years, for which he is paid around 55–65k depending on tax savings and HRA. After this, he serves as a senior resident for 3 years and receives a salary in the range of m 65–88k depending on tax savings and HRA. Usually, there is an increment of 3k every year.

Once MD is completed, you will continue to be treated as a SR and the pay will also remain the same. However, when the next pay commission is due, there will be an increase of around 15k in the salary.

Hope this helps you!

How is it that IIIT Bangalore has much better placements than the CSE department of most of the top 10 NITs and still the cutoff is 8500? I mean it has a median salary of 15.9LPA then why so?

SK
Sanjana Kapoor Posted On : October 10th, 2023
IIIT Bangalore

First, let us discuss some reasons for the high placement records of IIIT Bangalore CSE department-

  1. IIIT Bangalore does not believe in the system of mugging before an exam and filling out the answer sheets.
  2. The curriculum is updated every few years, and assignments and projects are an important part of all courses.
  3. Unlike the NITs, IIITB won’t make you study irrelevant subjects in your first year. You’ll study only the subjects relevant to your CSE degree from the beginning itself.
  4. You’ll learn basic CS in the first few semesters. The rest of the semesters will be utilized in teaching you advanced topics like ML, AI, CV, NLP, etc.

Now the reasons for low cutoffs, despite high placements are-

  1. It is a public-private co-owned college. This is why its fees are much higher in comparison to NITs.
  2. The admissions are completely merit-based. This increases the availability of seats.
  3. There can be a huge rank difference between the second last admission, and the last admission. So one should not judge the merit of a college based on its cutoff ranks.
  4. IIITs are comparatively new in this race. Even then, they are growing at a tremendous speed.
  5. IIITB offers limited courses. It offers iM.Tech instead of B.Tech.

These are the reasons why iM.Tech CSE cutoffs are so low at IIIT Bangalore, while their placement records are better than even top NITs.

Which is better for an MBBS course, KMC Manipal or Mangalore?

PP
Pratik Parikh Posted On : September 28th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

Both IMC Manipal as well as Mangalore have their own unique strengths and weaknesses. In terms of academics, both colleges are almost similar with some of the most experienced teachers, and excellent clinical exposure. The only major difference you will see is that KMC Mangalore has a dispersed campus so you have to travel through a city while you study. Mangalore therefore offers a more flexible life and offers an environment that helps you become a more independent person.

I would recommend Kasturba Medical College even over Government Institutes for MBBS training.

Which is better: An integrated five years course into DM neurology (NIMHANS) or completing my MD in general medicine and then specializing in DM neurology?

BG
Bidita Ghose Posted On : September 30th, 2023
Lives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

In my opinion, it’s best to complete an MD in medicine first rather than pursuing DM Neuro directly after MBBS.

It is so because M.B.B.S. students receive minimal clinical exposure and therefore their interest in a particular field might not be genuine. They might later regret their choice.

An integrated program is a 5-year program that requires a lot of commitment. So, if you go for a field you are not interested in, you will be wasting 5 years of your life. Even if you are sure of your interest in neurology, you may not actually like it when you start working. That being said, it's better that you do MD in medicine, have first-hand exposure to all the specialties, and then choose one for you.

People often choose integrated courses so as to save one year of education. However, they fail to recognize the risks involved.

Ultimately, unless you love neurology passionately and have enough exposure in the same, go for direct DM, else completing MD would be the safest bet.

Where do IGNOU exams generally take place at their study center or in nearby schools?

JT
Juby Thomas Posted On : October 20th, 2022
M.A. in Economics, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

IGNOU exams are never given at your study centre. It only happens for practical and internal exams. Typically, an examinee can select their examination centre from the options provided by IGNOU during the examination form-filling process (Online).

It should be noted that there is no guarantee that IGNOU will provide you with the same examination centre you selected during the form-filling process; this may change in some exceptional cases or circumstances. If you do not select an option, IGNOU will locate your examination centre near you. It would be in the same city where you are studying by default.

It could be any government school, college, or other institution that offered IGNOU courses. This means that your examination centre can only be one of the IGNOU study centres.
