How can an engineering student apply for summer or winter internships at top B schools like IIMs/ISB/XLRI, etc.?

NB
Nishtha Bhat Posted On : June 29th, 2021
Ph.D. from Xavier School of Management

You need to keep in mind that the internships at top B schools such as IIMs/ISB/XLRI will be strictly literary and not industrial. If you are interested in such things or your college does not have any strict criteria of doing only industrial internships, then you can definitely apply at these institutes.

Whenever you want to do an internship, start applying at least a month before the start of the internship. During the summers many professors are out of India or are on vacations or are attending some seminars, so apply as early as possible.

The process of application is as follows.

  • Search for projects or departments in the institutes which suit you and your interests.
  • Then look for the professors in your interested areas and find out their email IDs. This is simple and you can get all their details on their respective institute websites.
  • Send in your cover letters and CVs/resumes to them through e-mails. A cover letter should explain your interest, why you want to do the internship, your expectations, any prior knowledge if you have any, and other such details. CVs inform the professors about your academics, achievements, etc.
  • After sending the emails the only thing you can do is wait. You may get lots of negative responses. Some professors may even take some interviews or other tests or tasks.

You may even get a stipend which such internships.

former Intern at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

The procedure of application for a winter internship in IIM Ahmedabad is simple. But you need to be smart enough to get a reply from the professors.

  • First, you need to pick your area of interest from any one of the domains that IIM Ahmedabad offers.
  • Do some prior work related to your area of interest.
  • Make a CV that showcases your interests and career goals.
  • Write a cover letter that you are going to send to the professor. Keep your mail short and precise. Naturally, IIM Ahmedabad professors get a lot of emails, so your mail should interest them.
  • Don’t send the same cover letter to all the professors. Get to know the interest areas of the professors and modify your cover letter accordingly and send a mail only if your interest area clashes.

Also, don’t forget to mentions details regarding your availability, accommodation, and stipend details in the mail.

How do I get an internship at IIT BHU?

SM
Saurav Mishra Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.A Pyschology from Banaras Hindu University (2020)

Getting in touch with the professors could be the easiest way to get an internship at IIT BHU. You can send an email to the professors with whom you want to carry on your work. All the contact details of the professors and department related personnel are available on the official site of IIT BHU. Now, mailing those profs. could be a difficult and tedious task because you may not get a reply right away. A solution for this is keep sending reminders at some intervals. Also, your statement of purpose ( SOP ) should be enthusiastic, keen, and well written. If you have any prior research experience at your college, then it would be of great help. If you know some professors personally, then the chances of getting the internship are high as well. IIT BHU also offers direct internships for summers, so just keep checking their official website.

Lastly your CGPA should be quite good and you should have good recommendations from the professors at your college.

IIT Delhi typically offers internships to students in undergraduate or graduate programs. The application process generally includes the following steps:

  • Check the internship opportunities available on the IIT Delhi website.
  • Submit an online application, including your resume and a cover letter.
  • Complete any additional requirements, such as taking a test or providing transcripts.
  • Wait for a response from the internship coordinator or supervisor.

It's always a good idea to check the official website of IIT Delhi for the most up-to-date information on internships and the application process.

IIT Delhi usually starts accepting applications around Jan-Feb. You are required to upload your Resume, Cover letter, and an overview of a Research Paper published by any faculty member of the department you are applying at. In case they consider you eligible for the internship they will contact you via your email. A good CGPA might help but is not necessary for an internship.

How can we get internships at IIT Bombay?

HS
Hamza Shabir Posted On : March 13th, 2023
M.Tech in Electronic Systems, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) (Graduated 2014)

If you are a B.Tech 3rd-year student (or even in 2nd year) and you want to apply for an internship at IIT Bombay, the best way to do it is by contacting the professor. You need to follow certain steps to apply for the internship:

  • Identify the area you want to work on. Make sure you have a good interest in the area, good knowledge of what is currently happening in your area of interest, a good grade in the subject, and a decent CGPA (or percent marks).
  • Go through the website of IITB and the corresponding department. The website lists details of all the professors, their contact and the area of research. Identify the professor who is doing work in your area of interest.
  • Prepare a good resume highlighting what you have achieved in the area you want to work on. If you are in the early or middle years of B.Tech you might not have too much to highlight on. In those cases, you can mention the good grades you got in the subject you want to work on. Even a seminar or presentation that you have taken related to the area will be a plus.
  • Draft and send a mail to the professor. The mail should be catchy, crisp, and to the point. Don’t write too many and don’t write too less. Highlight what you want to do, why you want to do and what have you done so far. Attach your resume also. The professor may not reply to you for the first time. You can send a reminder mail maybe a week later. Even after sending a couple of emails if there is no reply, try calling. (Be careful here. Some professors don’t like directly calling them. You can call some of his students doing research under him and inquire. Normally his student details will also be on the website).
  • Once you come under the notice of the professor, he might or might not have a phone interview and ask you to come as an intern depending on your performance.
  • You need to get the consent of your college to do the internship at IITB. You can ask the professor about the formalities for it.

Though it seems simple to read, it will take a considerable amount of time, particularly finding a good professor. So, if you want to do an internship six months from now, you should start as soon as possible. You can always take the help of the faculties in your current B.Tech college. If there is any faculty who has direct contact with any of the professors in IITB, that will be the best way.

You can bypass all the above steps by getting a recommendation from the faculty. If you successfully complete an internship, it will make the professor happy, and he might be willing to give a recommendation letter, which is very valuable for your higher studies.

SM
Siddhant Mishra Posted On : August 6th, 2022
IPM from Indian Institute of Management Indore (2022)

You can intern under a professor of IIM Bangalore or at the NS Raghavan Entrepreneurship Cell (NSRCEL). NSRCEL offers great real-time internship opportunities. You can reach out to the faculties of IIMB or the mentors of NSRCEL.

If you are interested in a research internship, go through the ongoing research projects, and if any particular project piques your interest, reach out to the professor. Explain your interests and send over your resume and a cover letter. You will be accepted for the internship if they think you are a good fit for the internship.

TS
Tanya Sharma Posted On : September 7th, 2023
Studied at Delhi Technological university

Here are some details about the CSE department of NIT Durgapur-

  • Placements- NIT Durgapur has a good placement record, especially for its CSE department. Any decent student can get a job during placements. The average CTC offered for CSE was 21.45 LPA while the placement percentage stood at 85.71%.
  • Infrastructure- NIT Durgapur has a decent infrastructure, not at par with top NITs and IITs. However, developments are constantly taking place on campus.
  • Internship facility- There aren’t many on-campus internship offers for the students of NIT Durgapur. But you may get a chance at brands like Microsoft, DE Shaw, etc. Off-campus, the NIT tag will surely help you secure a good internship. Startups seek IIT and NIT students for internships/jobs.
  • Faculty- The CSE faculty is well qualified.
  • Environment- The crowd at NIT Durgapur is great. You’ll learn a lot from your peers.

Hence, you should go for the CSE department of NIT Durgapur. It's good in every aspect. (B.Tech IT has been discontinued since July 2023).

Do the dual degree students in IIIT Hyderabad get a chance to do internships or do they have to miss out on them?

AG
Ankur Gupta Posted On : August 2nd, 2023
studied at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad

I am a dual degree student at IIIT Hyderabad. According to me, a dual degree is a really good choice. One of my seniors got an internship offer from Facebook London for this summer, during her 5th year. The summer before that she interned at Google Dublin and during her 3rd year, she did GSoC.

Dual degree students have at least a year extra as compared to single degree students. This is a huge advantage and they can utilize the extra time they get for internships and projects without the burden of placements and a heavy coursework load.

Thus, dual degree students at IIIT Hyderabad do go for internships and projects.

How can I get an internship in IIIT Hyderabad?

AJ
Adinath Jain Posted On : August 2nd, 2023
Studied at IIIT Hyderabad

In order to get an internship in IIIT Hyderabad, contact the concerned professor through an email. Attach your CV in the mail. Make sure to keep your mail to the point. Refrain from sending the same general email to all the professors in the department. Your email should reflect that you know about your area of interest and how it will match with the interest of the concerned professor.

The IIIT Hyderabad professors get a large number of internship applications. Therefore, they may not mail you back incase of a rejection. If you get selected, well and good. If you receive no reply, simply move on, don’t keep waiting endlessly. The end of third year is the ideal time for internships.

If you live near Hyderabad, drop by at the annual R&D showcase to understand what all is going on. You can have discussions with the research students on topics that you find interesting. If convinced, you can try and meet the faculty as well.

Thus, you can get an internship in IIIT Hyderabad by following the steps mentioned in this answer.

What happens to IIM Ahmedabad (or any IIM for that matter) students who get a Cluster 3 summer internship?

PS
Priyadarshini Sen Posted On : February 12th, 2021
PGDM from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (2017)

You generally complete your internship in the first two months, after the completion of the internship you are able to return to the course.

After the internship, a question might pop in your mind, which is “Will you get good final placements?” The answer to this question depends on the C1 and C2 shortlists released during the summer.

If a student hasn’t managed to find a place on the shortlist, then he/she may face trouble while clearing the finals. However, there is no strict rule as such. The result depends on the performance of the student, which varies from person to person. If a student gets shortlisted but somehow fails to clear the interview, even then they do have a chance to steer out through the finals.

The students can even go for an exchange. Internship and exchange aren’t inter-related by any means. There have been students who have been placed at C1, C2, or C3 and they have gone for an exchange. Therefore, it’s totally possible.

Students often ask this question about how they can turn the situation around. Here, they need to understand that clusters don’t define how good or bad the assigned job is. All it does is highlights the type of recruiting company and the sector it belongs to. Thus, it is not a situation that needs to be turned around. C3 is equally good as C1, it isn’t inferior in any way.

The student needs to focus on keeping their GPA on track as well as getting done with their PGP2. Having gone through these steps the student will attain clarity, he/she can figure their way out. There aren’t any long term implications.

All the best!
