What would be the rank of BITS Pilani Goa campus and BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus if they were ranked separately?
I don’t believe that all BITS Pilani campuses are equally ranked. They certainly have a few similarities such as the curriculum and policies but apart from that the campuses have many major differences. Here are a few components based on which I have ranked BITS Pilani campuses
- Placements: Placement-wise the ranking of BITS campuses is Pilani>Go>Hyderabad. BITS Pilani has the best companies and packages followed by Goa. Hyderabad has a relatively lesser number of companies and the pay is also less.
- Practice School: Under this program, students go through a six-month internship in many great companies like Amazon, Apple, Goldman Sachs, Flipkart, Nomura, etc., and there are hundreds of companies to choose from. The only difference in the campuses is that you can make it to the top companies by scoring a 9-pointer at the Pilani campus while a 7-pointer at the Hyderabad campus. This is mainly because Hyderabad students are made to do summer term courses to get a few extra points during the allotment process.
- Campus life: The Pilani campus is remotely located and the students love a challenging life here. But all the harshness of the campus makes them grow as a person. Goa and Hyderabad campuses enjoy prime locations and facilities thereby offering a different type of development. However, the Pilani students are more open-minded, flexible, and hardworking than students from other campuses.
- Education: Sadly, the quality of education is deteriorating in all the BITS campuses. The faculty pool is pathetic and the mean grade is deflating day by day.
So, research well, talk to alumni of all the campuses, and then make a well-informed decision.
How good is BITS HYDERABAD ECE? What are its average and lowest packages?
BITS Hyderabad ECE is one of the strongest ECE programs in India outside the IITs. package picture:
Average package: ~Rs.15-18 LPA (2023-24). Higher than most NIT ECE programs.
Median package: ~Rs.12-14 LPA.
Highest packages: Qualcomm, Nvidia, Samsung R&D, Texas Instruments, Synopsys have offered Rs.30-60+ LPA for VLSI/hardware roles. These are selective roles, not the average.
Lowest packages: Very few students go below Rs.6-8 LPA due to Practice School exposure. Most ECE students get decent offers.
key insight — BITS ECE students often land software engineering roles (not just core electronics). The BITS brand + coding culture means ~60% end up in software/data roles, ~40% in core VLSI/embedded/hardware. If you want core ECE career, BITS is excellent. If you want to pivot to software, BITS ECE gives that flexibility too — which most other ECE programs don't offer as easily.
How do the classrooms at BITS Hyderabad look like?
As a second year student at BITS Hyderabad, I find myself eligible to answer your question.
The classrooms at our college are well furnished, spacious and air conditioned. The F102 and F105 lecture halls are huge in size. The seats are comfortable, and the lighting system is also quite good.
The campus library is, in fact, better than those at the other two BITS campuses. The reading section is spacious, beautifully furnished and in the best condition. The auditorium is huge and mesmerizing.
You will love to study at BITS Hyderabad, and won’t feel the lack of any facilities at all.
Is Bits Hyderabad CSE good and worth joining?
yes, BITS Hyderabad CSE is absolutely worth joining. it's one of the best CSE programs you can get in India outside of the IITs, and in some ways better than mid-tier IITs.
here's why it stands out:
- zero attendance policy — academic freedom is unmatched. you choose how to spend your time. this is a massive advantage for self-motivated learners who want to build projects, do internships, or pursue research
- Practice School (PS): mandatory 5-6 month industrial internship program through BITS. PS companies include Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, DE Shaw, Qualcomm, Nvidia. this is a huge differentiator
- Placements: 2024 placement avg was ~Rs.20-24 LPA, median ~Rs.15-18 LPA. high packages from product companies. consistent 95%+ placement
- Dual degree options: BE + MSc combinations give you deeper specialization
the valid concerns:
- Hyderabad campus is younger than Pilani, so the campus culture and alumni network are less established
- cutoff via BITSAT is high — you need ~360/390+ for Hyderabad CSE
- fees are ~Rs.6L/year, higher than govt colleges
if you're getting BITS Hyderabad CSE, it's a definite yes. it beats most NITs and IIITs on academic freedom, industry exposure, and peer quality. the only trade-offs are fees and the campus being newer than Pilani.
Is it possible to get into BITS Hyderabad without BITSAT?
No, it's not possible to get into BITS Hyderabad without BITSAT. BITSAT is the only admission route for B.E./B.Tech programs at all BITS campuses (Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad).
there is no JEE Main, board marks, or any alternative test that can substitute BITSAT for BITS admissions. BITS is a completely autonomous deemed university that runs its own entrance exam with strict eligibility.
the only exceptions where BITSAT isn't needed:
- BITS students with 12th board rank 1 in their respective state board are given direct admission — but this is extremely rare (literally state toppers only)
- Lateral entry transfers are theoretically possible but extremely rare in practice
so if you want BITS Hyderabad, you have to give BITSAT. the exam covers Physics, Chemistry, Math, English Proficiency, and Logical Reasoning. It's conducted online at test centers.
one important thing — BITS also looks at 12th marks as eligibility: you need 75% aggregate in PCM + English to be eligible for admission after qualifying BITSAT. if you have the BITSAT score but not 75% in 12th, you won't get the seat.
Is mechanical engineering at BITS Hyderabad good?
The mechanical department of BITS Hyderabad has its own advantages and disadvantages. These are-
Advantages-
- The department faculty is quite decent, with the faculty members having published a sizable amount of their research work in esteemed journals like Elsevier, ResearchGate, etc. The department receives decent industry projects.
- The research scholars are highly qualified, and their selection criteria has become more and more strict over the years. The department lays importance on industry relevant research. The research projects are receiving good funding, and research has become more relevant and of better quality.
Disadvantages-
- The department lacks good societies and clubs. Moreover, the students of Mechanical do not perform well in various competitions like BAJA, ESVC, HyperLoop, etc. The SAE society of Mechanical department is in a poor condition.
- The department students do not put much effort into learning advanced concepts, because of which very few of them get good coursework related projects under the faculty. The faculty in turn, has become more and more disinterested towards putting in extra efforts for the students.
I would recommend you choose Mechanical Engineering at BITS Hyderabad only if you are interested in a research career. This is not the best option for on campus placement.
How was your experience at the BITS Pilani-Hyderabad campus?
BITS Pilani Hyderabad never disappoints you, so don’t hesitate to choose BITS. Some highlighting factors about this renowned institute are given below
Peer Groups and Seniors – As we know, BITS is one of the leading institutes in India, and they have some vibrant and intelligent students who never hesitate to help us. This is clearly evident from my peer groups and supportive seniors. BITS has an amazing culture here, which turns us into very good human beings.
Scholars – The BITS Pilani, Hyderabad campus, is gifted with experienced scholars who support the students vigilantly. They have innate knowledge about their core subjects, and we can approach them to clear our doubts both online and offline.
Clubs – Numerous clubs are available to the students, which conduct many programs every year. This culture will help us meet people who share common interests.
Attendance Policy – BITS Pilani has a flexible attendance policy. They do not need mandatory attendance to attend the exams like any other college. This is one of the main factors in the individual growth of every student who appeared here.
BITS Pilani is the best for academics, extra-curricular activities, placement support, and research facilities.
Which should I choose: BITS Hyderabad or NIT Trichy?
This is one of the most debatable questions. Both NIT Trichy and BITS Hyderabad are well-known institutions that have their strengths and weaknesses.
Here are a few parameters on which one can compare the two-
- Reputation: BITS Hyderabad was established in the year 2008, and NIT Trichy was established in 1964. NIT Trichy is ranked 9th in the NIRF Rankings 2023 for Engineering and is consistently listed among the top 10 Engineering institutions in India.
- Peer groups: Both institutes are good and can not be compared because both institutions select candidates through different entrance exams.
- Location: BITS Hyderabad is better in terms of location because Hyderabad is a better city than Tiruchirapalli.
- Reservation: NIT Trichy does have reserved seats while BITS Hyderabad does not.
- Cost of Study: NIT Trichy costs around 10 Lakhs, while BITS Hyderabad goes to around 22 Lakhs.
- Infrastructure- Both the institutions have a good infrastructure but the BITS Hyderabad infrastructure is better.
- Placements- The average package at both is at par but Apple visits BITS Hyderabad which is a point in its favor.
If the fee is a matter of concern, I would suggest you go with NIT Trichy. Also, for Mechanical Engineering, NIT Trichy is an ideal place. For a JEE aspirant, NIT Trichy is a dream come true.
My personal preference is in this order-
- NIT Trichy
- NIT Surathkal
- NIT Warangal
- MNNIT Allahabad
- NIT Rourkela ~ BITS Hyderabad
- MNIT Jaipur
Both NIT Trichy and BITS Hyderabad are equally good institutions and you can choose either of the two after considering each of the above aspects.
How is food in the mess at BITS Hyderabad?
Before beginning with my answer, I would like for you to make a note that no mess food can ever compete with home food. So it is not worth it to compare the two.
Coming to BITS Hyderabad, the mess food is quite decent. There are two messes on the campus, and they serve both North and South Indian meals on most days.
At first, you’ll be delighted by the variety of dishes served by the messes. But as time goes by, you’ll get bored of eating the same kind of food, served strictly according to the mess time table. Further, you’ll begin to miss your mom’s recipes, which will ultimately make you think that the food at the hostels is not good at all. Because of all this, you’ll start eating at the cafeteria or miss some meals altogether.
Speaking in a more practical and evaluative fashion, the mess food at BITS Hyderabad is certainly better than many IITs and NITs. You’ll be served decent and satisfactory meals at the college.
How are the placements of dual degree programs at BITS Hyderabad?
The dual degree placements at BITS Hyderabad depend upon several factors. Some of them are-
- The combination of dual degree, and if it complements your B.E. branch. Like Math+CS is a brilliant combination, and ECO will get you a decent core placement. Similarly, Physics+EEE/EnI/Mech/ECE will be much more beneficial than a simple B.E.
But everything depends on the company that you wish to apply for. Financial companies have a cutoff, but unless you have studied Economics, they won’t care about your B.E. and MSc. degrees.
2. Certain old school companies do not even allow dual degree students to sit for their placements. Such companies are few in number.
However, most companies won’t pay heed to your MSc. degree, simply because the concept of an MSc.+B.E. is unique to BITS. So at the end, your B.E. degree will most probably get you placed.
Thus, your dual degree at BITS Hyderabad won’t serve you much in terms of placements. Most companies will look at the B.E. part of it.
