Which is better, IISc or IIT Bombay?

PI
Pooja Iyer Posted On : May 5th, 2026

IISc Bangalore vs IIT Bombay — two of India's finest institutions but quite different:

IISc (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore):

  • India's #1 research institution (QS, NIRF). world-class for basic sciences and engineering research
  • primarily postgraduate (MTech, ME, PhD) — undergraduate is the 4-year BS research program
  • for research careers: IISc is unmatched in India. alumni in top global research labs, faculty positions worldwide
  • not the right choice if you want a corporate job after 4 years — the BS program is research-oriented

IIT Bombay:

  • India's top engineering institution (alongside IIT Madras) for technology and industry-facing careers
  • excellent placements in tech, finance, consulting. placement is a major strength
  • strong research too, but more balanced between research and industry compared to IISc
  • BTech programs are primarily engineering-focused

simple guideline: if you want a career in fundamental research, PhD, or academic science — IISc. if you want a technology/industry career with strong placement and brand — IIT Bombay. both are world-class institutions in their domains.

Why is getting into IIT Bombay tougher than getting into Harvard?

NJ
Neelam Joshi Posted On : May 1st, 2026

IIT Bombay vs Harvard — why does people say IIT is harder to get into?

it's about acceptance rates relative to applicants:

  • Harvard: ~3.5% acceptance rate from ~57,000 applicants = ~2,000 students admitted per year
  • IIT Bombay CSE (and top IITs overall): approximately 0.02% of JEE Main aspirants get the top IIT branches. About 13 lakh students appear for JEE Main; ~1.7 lakh qualify for JEE Advanced; roughly 16,000 get IITs — that's about 1.2% of all JEE Main takers. For CSE at IIT Bombay specifically: ~150 seats for 13+ lakh JEE Main takers = 0.01%

so on pure acceptance rate math for the top programs, IIT Bombay CSE is more selective than Harvard's overall admit rate.

however the comparison isn't fully apples-to-apples: Harvard selects holistically (essays, recommendations, extracurriculars) while IIT is purely exam-based. Harvard's applicant pool is global and self-selected; JEE has near-universal participation from Indian 12th-grade science students.

different systems, different difficulty types. but the math of selection ratios supports the claim.

What are the pros and cons of studying in IIT Bombay?

SB
Sumit Bose Posted On : March 20th, 2023
IIT Bombay (2019)

IIT Bombay is the dream college of many Engineering aspirants. Some major pros and cons of IIT Bombay are mentioned below:

Pros

  • IIT Bombay is the elite Engineering college in India with almost 75% of 100 rankers targeting this institute.
  • IIT Bombay offers a variety of courses in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry
  • It provides holistic development of students.
  • The MNCs that visit during placements offer high packages that are quite appealing.
  • Some of the top branches include CSE, Chemical, Civil and Mechanical. The faculty of all these branches are extremely learned. CSE students are busy with projects and usually get recruited by top IT companies while chemical engineering promotes research.

Cons

  • IIT Bombay is not a university providing courses in other fields such as arts, dance, painting, or the law.
  • Most of the courses focus on application only. For instance, even math is not pure but applied
  • The quality of education is gradually deteriorating over the past few years despite all efforts to save it from the fall
  • Most top students prefer to go for jobs rather than become researchers

The cons are not major enough to overshadow the pros yet and the Institute is expected to remain among the top for a few more years.

Do you regret joining IIT Bombay?

SA
Subhashree Adhikari Posted On : March 18th, 2023
B.Tech from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) (2019)

I know a friend who is currently in her second semester and she shared a few pieces of information regarding the scenario there.

As everyone says, joining IIT Bombay was indeed a very fun-filled experience and it satisfies all your cravings for a rich college life experience.

However, after a few days, she became aware of some harsh realities. Due to the relaxed ambiance, she stopped focusing on academics and was not among the toppers anymore. This affected her confidence a lot. She started feeling inferior to her peers and considered herself just an average student. She started anticipating if her decision to join IIT Bombay was even worth it. Eventually, she realized that she was mistaken and the truth was way different. She realized a few things she wasn’t able to ascertain before

  • She was able to learn such things she could not have learned anywhere else
  • She had learned to work more than her capabilities and push her limit by studying with many geniuses
  • She got to know her worth when compared to people in the same field
  • Life at IIT Bombay made her all the more humble and mature, ready to face life challenges strongly.

She eventually did not regret joining IIT Bombay even a bit. She gave it the credit for grooming her overall personality.

What rank is required in JEE Advanced to get CSE in IIT Bombay?

PG
Pratik Gandhi Posted On : March 18th, 2023
B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

To get CSE in IIT Bombay, you need a JEE Advanced rank of 60 if you belong to General Category. This rank keeps getting lower every year. If you are certain of studying CSE at IIT Bombay, then start studying without further hesitation. In case you are still not sure, I have a friend's experience that might help you make the decision. He was interested in Mechanical and was not sure about CSE. With a rank of 70, he went for Mechanical Engineering.

Now there is a course at IIT Bombay that is compulsory for all freshers. The course comprises the fundamentals of Computer Science. Once he studied that, he became certain that he wanted to pursue CSE instead and requested a branch change. In fact, I know many who changed their branch after becoming aware of their passion and inclinations. So you don’t have to necessarily make a decision right now, and can always avail of the branch change option later on. But make sure to make an early decision. Also if your JEE rank is average then you can always change your branch later on. However, an important thing to keep in mind is that this branch change option is possible only if your first-year CGPA is up to the mark.
