Which is better for Computer Science, IIT BHU or IIT Bhubaneswar?

SS
Sritama Singha Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (IIT BHU)

IIT BHU and IIT Bhubaneswar are ranked 11th and 22nd respectively by the engineering category NIRF 2020.

IIT BHU being an older institute does have a large alumni network which results in good placements but it lacks modern infrastructure which is better in IIT Bhubaneswar. Being a new IIT, IIT Bhubaneswar has better hostels than any other IITs. Thus in terms of infrastructure, IIT Bhubaneswar is better than IIT BHU.

IIT BHU is located in Varanasi which is not the capital city of Uttar Pradesh but IIT Bhubaneswar is located in the capital city of Orissa giving it the advantage of better connectivity with the metropolis, airport and as a result, it attracts more multinational companies.

The closing rank in IIT BHU for CS is under 1000 and that of IIT Bhubaneswar is under 2500. Thus students with a better rank often choose IIT BHU. Coding Culture, Faculty, etc. are also better in IIT BHU.

Placements are also better in IIT BHU for Computers than IIT Bhubaneswar. But despite being a newly established institute the first batch in Computers of IIT Bhubaneswar got placed with an average salary package of 15 lakhs per annum.

So, IIT BHU is a better choice for computer compared to IIT Bhubaneswar is also worth considering because their Computer Engineering department is the most popular. In 2019 placement in Computer Engineering was 100%.

What are some amazing facilities at IIT BHU?

ZK
Zishaan Kapoor Posted On : August 13th, 2020
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi

The 100 years old IIT BHU is recognized worldwide for the academic environment it offers. Hostels have large well-maintained lush green courtyards. Each hostel has its badminton court, gardens, and mess. Food provided in the mess is hygienic. There are different types of the mess facilities available like South Indian, Swastik (Jain Mess). For the internet, hostel rooms have LAN port and wifi. Internet speed is pretty good. Each hostel has its parking under camera surveillance. Anyone can keep any vehicles without restrictions. You can also hire cycles on rent (Paddle Services). The campus has a gymkhana, swimming pool, a large auditorium, Vishwanath temple, a library, cafeteria, tea stall, mother dairy, fruit corner, and stationery shop.

It has many clubs that students can become a member, like dance, music, robotics, astronomy, aerodynamics, science and technology club, film and media club, animation, photography, design, etc. Sports, cultural, and technical facilities are quite good and organize inter IIT level competitions.

Outside of the campus, there is a lot of historical places to visit like Kalbhairav (Kotwal of Varanasi), Sankat Mochan temple, Ramnagar Fort, and Ganga ghats, etc. Overall, IIT BHU provides a mixup facility of old and new IITs.

How do the placements really compare between MNNIT Allahabad B.Tech Computer Science Engineering and IIT BHU B.Tech Mining Engineering?

L
LuminousLemurLord Posted On : April 18th, 2026

No. You can't really compare placements at an NIT with those at an IIT. MNNIT might showcase a 45 LPA CTC, but it's crucial to understand the components of a CTC (Fixed and Variable) and whether it includes international placements. If it was international, the USD value was simply converted and published, which can be misleading. We often overlook the cost of living in that country, the average income at a certain living/employment bracket, and what x rupees here would translate to there.

That said, MNNIT Allahabad is an excellent institute, and the CS placements there are enviable! However, keep in mind that a 45 L CTC is the highest in CSE and would typically be offered to only 1–2 students. Look at the average figures, the number of companies recruiting per student, and the number of offers per company, then compare that with IIT BHU. Many NITs boast of 1.4 Cr Google CTCs, and even DTU claims the same. Companies like EPIC Systems also offer around 150,000 USD on campus. Convert that, and you'll see what a near 1 Cr offer really means. But that doesn't imply these institutes have better placements than IITs.

Should I go for B.Tech Computer Science Engineering in NIT Trichy or B.Tech Ceramic Engineering in IIT BHU?

S
SavageSunflower Posted On : April 14th, 2026

CSE is an amazing branch! You'll find 100% placement for this field in many top institutes.

  • Placements for CSE at IIT BHU are also excellent. You can expect to get placed for sure.
  • Average packages are around 20 lakhs, with some students managing to secure 35 lakhs (though they are few in number).
  • It's a dream branch at NITT, alongside VLSI.
  • Students tend to be very relaxed and spend a lot of time in Octagon or Annex, which are large air-conditioned computer labs where you can also get printouts for 1 Rs/page.

However, if you prefer the IIT tag, then IIT BHU might be the better choice for you. It’s a good idea to ask someone from CSE at IIT BHU about their placement packages and other details to make an informed decision.

Thanks for reading!

Should I go for B.Tech Electrical Engineering in MNNIT Allahabad or B.Tech Chemical Engineering in IIT BHU?

P
PonderingPioneer Posted On : April 13th, 2026

MNNIT Allahabad offers a solid B.Tech in Electrical Engineering with excellent placement records, especially in software roles, and a reasonable fee structure of around Rs.118,500 per semester (including hostel and mess). However, the campus life and academic support could be better. In contrast, IIT BHU's B.Tech in Chemical Engineering comes with a prestigious name and likely higher long-term ROI, but the fees can be higher as well. If you're leaning towards software or coding, MNNIT might be a smarter financial choice, while IIT BHU is better for those aiming for a strong reputation and diversified career options in engineering. If you want quick returns, go for MNNIT; if you value brand and long-term prospects, IIT BHU is the way to go.

How do the placements really compare between NIT Trichy B.Tech Computer Science Engineering and IIT BHU B.Tech Chemical Engineering?

A
AbyssalAngel Posted On : April 11th, 2026

With NIT Trichy's B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering, you get a robust curriculum focused on in-demand skills and impressive placement stats like a 98% placement rate and a median package of 14 LPA, all for a total fee of around Rs. 1.5 lakhs for four years. In contrast, IIT BHU's B.Tech in Chemical Engineering has a reputation that often translates to higher initial packages, but the fees can be significantly higher, potentially diminishing the ROI for some students. If you’re leaning towards tech and coding, NIT Trichy might offer better value for money and a quicker return on investment. However, if you're set on chemical engineering and can handle the costs, IIT BHU could provide long-term benefits. Ultimately, it depends on your career goals and financial situation; choose based on what aligns best with your aspirations!

Should I go for B.Tech Electronics & Communication Engineering in MNNIT Allahabad or B.Tech Bioengineering + M.Tech Biomedical Technology in IIT BHU?

C
CyberneticCreeper Posted On : March 31st, 2026

Biotechnology at MNNIT Allahabad is really good in comparison to other NITs. You can get placed here if you have potential, and core companies have started coming for campus placements. However, I suggest you choose Biotechnology only if you have an interest in research, as it is a field focused on that. Additionally, at MNNIT, you have the option to slide your branch in the first year if your CPI is above 7.5, allowing you to opt for your desired branch, but you will need to work hard in the first year. Honestly, I suggest MNNIT is the better option.

What is the difference between getting into an Indian Institute of Technology IIT and getting into a Banaras Hindu University BHU? How difficult is it to get into an IIT after getting into a BHU?

S
SpectralSphinx Posted On : February 16th, 2026

Getting into an IIT involves taking the All India JEE Advanced exam, and IITs mainly focus on engineering fields. However, they also offer programs in areas like management and interdisciplinary studies. There are 23 IITs across India.

On the other hand, BHU is a central university founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya in 1916. It offers a wide range of courses in fields like management, science, law, medicine, arts, agriculture, geology, commerce, languages, music, and dance, except for engineering. Admissions to BHU are conducted through the Common University Entrance Test at the national level.

Interestingly, what used to be IT BHU became a separate entity and was designated as an IIT in 2012.

What is your review of Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi IIT BHU?

ForgottenFortune Posted On : February 16th, 2026

If you can't secure a spot in the older, prestigious IITs or get into popular branches like CSE, M&C, or Electronics in the newer IITs that are growing quickly, then IIT BHU might be a good alternative. Just keep in mind that the infrastructure there isn't the best and might need some improvements.
