How are NIT Calicut hostels?

RB
Riya Banerjee Posted On : August 25th, 2021
B.Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2018)

Few of my friends attend NIT Calicut and they were able to give me some information regarding the hostel on campus.

  • More than half of the hostel buildings appear to be old and rustic. They were built about 50 years ago but they still serve the basic required standard.
  • Apart from your own room, everything else is cleaned almost every day. You will have to clean your room on your own.
  • The first-year students are allocated rooms based on a 4 sharing system.
  • For the second-year students who reside in hostel C, one room is allocated to three students. For those of the students who reside in Mega, the rooms are allocated on a two-sharing system.
  • For third-year students residing in hostels B and C, one room is shared by three students.
  • In the fourth year, usually, single rooms are allocated but due to renovation in hostel E, some of the rooms are allocated on a two-sharing basis.
  • The food at the messes is sometimes good and sometimes bad. If you are willing to spend some extra money, you can make up for it.
  • Internet connectivity is good. On some days the download speed goes up to 12 megabytes per second.
  • From the second year onwards, there is no restriction imposed on boys regarding entry/exit time. Girls have permission to stay out till 9 pm.

NIT Calicut hostels are good in comparison to many engineering institutions in the country. You will enjoy your engineering life at the hostels there.

How do the placements really compare between NIT Trichy B.Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering and NIT Calicut B.Tech Electronics & Communication Engineering?

J
JubilantJackalJudge Posted On : April 18th, 2026

When looking at the placements and financial aspects, NIT Trichy’s B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering offers a more robust ROI compared to NIT Calicut’s B.Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering. NIT Trichy has a solid curriculum connected to real-world problems and attracts major tech companies for placements, while the availability of scholarships and fee waivers makes it financially accessible. Although NIT Calicut also has good opportunities, the overall placement statistics and campus involvement at NIT Trichy make it a smarter choice for maximizing your investment. If you want a course with better financial returns and opportunities, I’d recommend going for NIT Trichy.

How do the placements really compare between MNNIT Allahabad B.Tech Electrical Engineering and NIT Calicut B.Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering?

S
SillySeahorse Posted On : April 17th, 2026

MNNIT Allahabad and NIT Calicut both offer solid placements, but MNNIT stands out in terms of return on investment. MNNIT has a higher placement percentage, with 90+% last year and strong internship opportunities from top firms like Microsoft and Goldman Sachs. The fees at MNNIT are around Rs.93,500 per semester, which is reasonable considering the strong placement record and scholarships for top performers. NIT Calicut also has a good reputation, but the placement data isn't as robust, and the overall campus life is described as average. For students prioritizing ROI and placement opportunities, MNNIT Allahabad seems to be the smarter financial choice, especially for those aiming for lucrative software roles.

NIT Trichy or NIT Calicut would be the best for B.Arch?

G
GregariousGriffinGuide Posted On : April 16th, 2026

None. These are technical institutes, and architecture is a completely different field. None of the NITs or IITs are recognized in this area.

If you genuinely want to pursue architecture at a reputable institute, consider the following options:

  • SPA
  • CEPT
  • Other good state-level institutes (for example, in Mumbai, some of the top ones are: Sir JJCoA, KRVIAE, Rachna Sansad, etc.; in Chandigarh, you have CCoA; every state or city should have at least one good architecture institute).

Which one should I opt for NIT Trichy B.Tech Metallurgical and Materials Engineering or NIT Calicut B.Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering

S
SolarSandal Posted On : April 15th, 2026

This answer might not give you a direct solution, but it could help someone else! Here are some options to consider:

  • Choose Production in B.Tech if you're interested in MBA later. This is true! Out of all B.Tech branches, Production is the closest to an MBA curriculum. Plus, it generally has less academic pressure and more relaxed professors at NIT Trichy.
  • Take Metallurgy and see if you enjoy it. It's a calculated risk! The curriculum isn't too tough, so you can manage other interests too. Higher studies and research in material science abroad can be lucrative and appealing. Just remember, it’s a significant investment (more than 50 lakhs) unless you secure a scholarship. The only downside is, what if you don’t want to pursue that path after your third year?
  • Prefer college over branch. This is a general opinion, but it holds weight. You mentioned you can only get Metallurgy at NIT Trichy. The college experience and peer group matter a lot, but you can only truly understand their importance by experiencing it.
  • Consider fields more relevant for MBA, like Economics.

Which one should I opt for MNNIT Allahabad B.Tech Biotechnology or NIT Calicut B.Tech Computer Science Engineering

C
CobaltCaramelMacchiato Posted On : April 10th, 2026

In terms of placements, NIT Allahabad has a stellar reputation with over 90% of students getting placed and an impressive average package of 19.7 LPA, making it a strong choice for B.Tech in Biotechnology. On the other hand, NIT Calicut also offers solid placement opportunities with major tech companies like Microsoft and Amazon visiting, but the focus leans more towards Computer Science Engineering. While NIT Allahabad has a wider variety of companies visiting and a better placement rate, NIT Calicut provides good internship opportunities and the potential for pre-placement offers. If you're aiming for a high-paying job right out of college, NIT Allahabad for Biotechnology might be the better option, but if you're more inclined towards tech and coding, NIT Calicut for Computer Science could also set you on a successful path.

How do the placements really compare between MNNIT Allahabad B.Tech Electrical Engineering and NIT Calicut B.Tech Civil Engineering?

P
PricklyParagon Posted On : April 8th, 2026

MNNIT Allahabad's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering boasts impressive placements, with a 90%+ placement rate, particularly strong in software roles, thanks to a vibrant coding culture and top-tier companies like Microsoft and Goldman Sachs recruiting from campus. In contrast, NIT Calicut's B.Tech in Civil Engineering, while respectable, doesn’t quite match the sheer volume of high-paying tech placements seen at MNNIT. So, if you're leaning towards a software career and want the best job prospects, MNNIT is the clear choice. However, if civil engineering is your passion and you're okay with a more traditional placement scenario, NIT Calicut could still be a solid option.

How do the placements really compare between MNNIT Allahabad B.Tech Industrial & Production Engineering and NIT Calicut B.Tech Electronics & Communication Engineering?

T
TwistedTiramisu Posted On : April 1st, 2026

MNNIT Allahabad and NIT Calicut both have their strengths, but when it comes to fees and ROI, MNNIT stands out. With a fee of 10 lakhs for 4 years, MNNIT's Industrial & Production Engineering offers a diverse curriculum and ample extracurricular activities, which can boost your employability, despite the competition for internships. In contrast, NIT Calicut's Electronics & Communication Engineering program has a higher entry cutoff and potentially better placement stats, but the fee structure isn’t as transparent. Scholarships at MNNIT are more accessible for low-income families, making it a smarter financial choice for those seeking value for money. If you prioritize a well-rounded experience with better financial aid options, go for MNNIT; if you aim for a tech-centric career and can handle a bit more pressure, NIT Calicut could be your pick.

Which one should I opt for NIT Trichy B.Arch or NIT Calicut B.Arch

I am not much sure about NIT Trichy’s Arch department. However, I can guarantee that you won’t regret studying B.Arch in NIT Calicut. With Trichy, the cons are its location and weather. But with Calicut, the weather is very good. Second, Calicut's Arch department building is just wow! Plus, the faculty is good there. So you can opt based on your preference.

Is NIT Calicut worth joining??

V
VerboseViper Posted On : February 26th, 2026

This question isn't quite enough to give a full answer because there are a few things that need to be clarified first, like whether you're asking about an undergraduate or postgraduate program and which branch you're interested in. But to keep it simple, if you're considering a BTech, the academics at NIT Calicut are solid, especially strong in CSE and ECE. However, core branches don't do as well in placements compared to these two. The college is pretty strict overall. Hostels are on campus, and students can switch their mess each month, with eight messes to choose from. The cultural events are top-notch. The climate is moderate, but the campus is about 20 km away from the city. The student body is quite diverse, though most teachers are from the south.

For PG courses, if you're not from Kerala, you might want to consider other options. Placement opportunities for PG core branches are lacking, and accommodations are subpar, located about a kilometer away from campus on hilly terrain. PG students get only 8 casual leaves, unlike the 15 offered at other colleges. The facilities aren't top-tier for PG, and there's not much of a college life experience for PG students.

To wrap it up, I'd rate the UG programs an 8 out of 10, while PG programs get a 4 out of 10.
