RS
Raghav Saini Posted On : September 16th, 2020
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology Durgapur (2022)

With regards to educational standards and latest equipped technologies, Indian institutes have always had an upper hand considering greater popularity and a higher amount of funding from the central government.

IIEST Shibpur is the second oldest engineering college in India and backs a ranking of 19 by NIRF among engineering institutes. NIT Durgapur on the other hand is ranked 47 by NIRF for Engineering in the year 2020.

IIEST Shibpur has a research-based approach towards the BTech program in CST as compared to NIT Durgapur which has a much more theoretical and practical approach.

Let us have a look at the main points of differences between the two colleges mentioned that will help you narrow down a decision.

Admission: IIEST Shibpur and NIT Durgapur, both the institutes offer admission for BTech programs based on JEE Mains scores.

  • In 2019 the closing cutoff for CST at IIEST Shibpur was 9379.

  • In 2019 the closing cutoff for CSE at NIT Durgapur was 17031.

Fees: The total fees for IIEST Shibpur CST are 5.38 lakhs and for NIT Durgapur it’s 5.56 lakhs.

  • Some top recruiting companies are TCS, IBM, and Axis Bank.

NIT Durgapur-

  • NIT Durgapur offers the highest placement for the CSE branch with a placement rate of 88.64%.

  • An average salary of 9 LPA is offered to the students.

  • Some top recruiting companies are Amazon, Oracle, and Sigma.

Infrastructure: The campus facilities at both the colleges are well maintained and offer a great student experience but IIEST has a more advanced infrastructure considering it receives a higher funding amount annually as compared to NIT Durgapur.

Alumni: IIEST Shibpur has had collaborations with top universities like the University of Wisconsin and also oversees ‘World leaders in Engineering’ as part of their glorious alumni network. The alumni base of NIT Durgapur is not as developed as compared to IIEST Shibpur.

Should I take electrical engineering in new IITs like Ropar, Patna, and Dhanbad or physics in old IITs like Kharagpur and Roorkee or computer science at NIT Hamirpur?

Anyone getting admission to any IIT should not consider NITs then. It’s true that the old IITs have better infrastructure and brand value than tier-2 IITs but these new IITs are still in their development stage and haven’t reached their conclusion. Considering their huge growth over the past decade, they will reach new heights in the future

The new IITs provide better opportunities and freedom to students as the foundation of the college isn’t very strong so they build it alongside. The students grow and develop their personalities along with the growing institute. There is no compromise in the quality of education as the faculty is recruited after tremendous filtering.

The branch is more important than the college so don’t choose a less preferred branch in an old IIT just for the brand value rather go for the branch of your choice in a new IIT.

As for Physics, it requires genuine commitment and interest. Go for it only if you are certain of a career in it as the options in this branch are limited in contrast to Electrical Engineering. That being said, IIT Ropar is one of the best second-generation IITs, and its curriculum is very flexible and the location is also great. So my final recommendation would be to go for IIT Ropar Electrical.

What should I go for, IT in NIT Surathkal or CS in NIT Allahabad? I want to go for Surathkal but don't know if IT is a good option.

One of my friends was doubtful whether the hindi-speaking culture of MNNIT will have any impact on her English communication skills. If you are doubtful regarding the same, I would say you need not worry uselessly.

Students from MNNIT clear CAT with good scores. This wouldn’t have been possible without clearing the CAT verbal paper. Students converse in Hindi on campus simply because most of them belong to North India. This won’t have any negative effect on your English proficiency. Also, the professors deliver lectures in English. Other than that, to keep enhancing your English skills, you can join the English Literature group of MNNIT.

As far as your options are concerned, MNNIT is known for its top notch education in CSE. It is one of the best colleges in India for a CSE program. Also, the placements offered at MNNIT are quite impressive, especially for its CSE branch.

According to me, you should choose CSE at MNNIT over IT at NIT Surathkal.

Which is better if one is planning to apply for an MBA/PGDM from IIMs after graduation: ECE and/or CSE at NIT Durgapur, or IT at Jadavpur University? Why?

TA

Let me share with you some important details about these courses/institutes-

  1. NIT Durgapur is a residential campus so you’ll get ample exposure during your undergraduate studies. On the other hand, JU doesn’t even offer IT on its main campus.
  2. NIT DGP is an Institute of National Importance. This makes it more significant on a national level.
  3. NIT Durgapur is seeing a growing number of recruitments in its CSE branch. Startups visit the campus with interesting offers for CSE students.
  4. The student community of NIT Durgapur is more diverse.
  5. NIT DGP has no political interference. JU, on the other hand, is heavily influenced by state politics.
  6. In terms of extracurricular activities, JU is a better choice.
  7. The CSE/ECE departments of NIT DGP lack good infrastructure, have inconsistent course structure and content, and have a low teacher-student ratio. These departments lack quality research work.
  8. Phd.s in the CSE department of NIT Dgp are low in number.
  9. But NIT DGP carries the much-valued ‘NIT’ tag.

That being said, I feel you are at a very early stage of narrowing down your goals and aspirations to this extent. Enter your UG with an open mind, and an aim for self-discovery. Right now, you have a picture in mind of doing an MBA. But I don’t think you have a proper idea of the different specializations in this degree.

You should have made a clear decision by the end of your 3rd year. Before that, pursue internships and discover your field of interest. Right now, look for the institute that will offer you the best technical education and the best future prospects.

Honestly, there isn't any major difference between CSE and IT branches as both are related to computers. The job opportunities are almost similar. So, you should prioritize college over branch in your case. NIT Surathkal is much better than MNNIT Allahabad and this can be further understood through the points below

Location: NIT Surathkal has an advantage over NIT Allahabad due to its location near Bangalore, the IT hub of India. Most Bangalore-based companies firstly visit NITK Surathkal. Last year major companies like Microsoft, DE Shaw, Uber, Amazon, Oracle and visited the campus last year.

It has secured 13th Rank in the ICPC Asia Contest which is the highest ranked of all NITs. NIT Surathkal is the only single NIT that became a finalist in the ACM ICPC World Contest.

Academics: Every year students win International awards proving that their academics are better than MNNIT Allahabad.

Campus Life: The campus life of NITK Surathkal is also better than NIT Allahabad as NITK Surathkal has a private beach with a lush green campus of 300 acres and its fest Incident is the largest Cultural event in South India

Placements: Refer to the table below for comparison of placement statistics

Which is better for CS, NIT (Warangal, Trichy) or BITS Pilani?

KS
Kalyan Shastri Posted On : August 19th, 2023
Lives in Warangal

NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, and BITS Pilani are all good colleges for CSE. Here is a comparison among them based on various parameters-

  1. Brand Value - RECs were rechristened as NITs and taken under the Centre’s control in 2003. On the other hand, BITS Pilani is a much older brand. However, the top NITs are as much favored by recruiters as BITS Pilani. One can say that in terms of brand value, the top 3-4 NITs are almost at par with BITS Pilani.
  2. Placements - During 2023, The CSE branch at NIT Warangal saw the highest package of INR 88 LPA and the average package of INR 30.8 LPA.

At BITS Pilani, Tech students were offered a package between INR 11 - 38 LPA. At NIT Trichy, the highest package overall stood at INR 40 LPA for the year 2022. From these figures, one can declare that at present NIT Warangal has the best placements for CSE among the three (as per the official figures).

  1. Fee- At BITS Pilani, you will be spending around three times more than the NITs for the same degree. Thus, with regard to course fees, NITs are much more affordable than BITS Pilani.
  2. Crowd - To some extent, BITS Pilani is the winner because the admissions at BITS Pilani are purely merit-based. Although, one has to consider that JEE is much more difficult than BITSAT, and in fact, many students at top NITs clear JEE advanced.

Overall, all three colleges are quite good for your CSE. In the end, it is you who has to put in the required effort.

Does Nit Rourkela placement cell allow civil engineering students to sit for computer science engineering placement?

DJ
Dinesh Johri Posted On : August 17th, 2023
Studying B.Tech from National Institutes of Technology (2024)

It is not that NIT Rourkela placement cell does not allow Civil Engineering students to sit for CSE placements. The thing is that most software companies that visit the campuses with SDE roles do not allow other branches to sit for their placements. I assume by CSE placements you are referring to IT companies.

Certain top companies like Microsoft, Google, Goldman Sachs and Mathworks allow students from all the branches to sit for their placements. But for most software companies, branch is one of the criteria to filter out those students who can apply. Also, they mostly prefer students from CSE and circuital branches like EI, EC and EE.

The reason being that students from these branches work with codes more often and are well-versed in programming languages. The same is imperative for working in IT companies. However, it is also true that many students in other branches love to code and wish to work in these IT firms.

NIT Rourkela has no control over the criteria set by various IT companies and you will have to check the same before planning to sit for the placement of any IT firm.
