Should I take mechanical at Thapar University or metallurgical and material sciences at PEC, Chandigarh?

UN
Urmimala Nath Posted On : May 5th, 2021
B.Tech from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh (2019)

Both Mechanical and metallurgical engineering at Thapar and PEC Chandigarh have their own pros and cons. Let's list them out to opt for the best college for you.

PEC Chandigarh:

  • PEC Chandigarh has a better brand name compared to Thapar University. But Thapar is surely not far behind.
  • PEC has an amazing culture that prepares its students for future career challenges.
  • One can prepare well for their further MBA, Mtech, or MS entrance exams while being at PEC Chandigarh.
  • Being a government college, PEC is doing a great job in its placement department. There was a 28% hike in their placement record in 2020 despite the pandemic situation.

Thapar University:

  • Thapar has an amazing placement record and coding culture.
  • As a brand name, it's growing up to the heights of PEC.
  • If you opt for metallurgical science, you will limit yourself to few core companies or steel and other manufacturing firms.

Unless you are into metallurgical sciences it's better to opt for mechanical engineering as you can even jump into both technical and non-technical firms.

Quick comparison:

Particulars

PEC

(Mechanical Engineering)

Thapar University

(Metallurgical and material sciences)

Entrance exam

JEE Main

JEE Main

Total fees

6.39 lakh

8.85 - 17.36 lakh

Placement rate

90%

84%

Highest CTC offered

15 LPA

40 LPA

Average CTC offered

6.5 LPA

6-7 LPA

Out of the above two, ME at PEC seems like a better option. PEC being a government institute has half the tuition fee of Thapar University which saves you a lot. If you plan on an MBA further, it's better to opt the best out of two and start preparing from the first year of your college itself.

When deciding on which engineering branch to pursue, it is important to choose that interests you the most. If you are trying to choose between mechanical engineering at Jadavpur University and civil engineering at MNNIT Allahabad, it is important to consider your own personal interests and career aspirations.

You should go for the engineering branch that you like the most. This way, you will be able to enjoy your studies throughout your four years at the institute, and also during your future career.

Choosing an engineering branch based solely on external factors such as job availability or pay can lead to a lack of motivation and interest, which can ultimately negatively impact your academic performance and career growth. What are the good courses at ISB Hyderabad for a mechanical engineer?

MR
Maheshwar Reddy Posted On : February 8th, 2023
MBA in Information Management & Finance, Indian School of Business (Graduated 2019)

Your question is vague as everyone has a different definition of a good course. One may prefer a rigorous course while others may prefer a laid-back course. However, because the courses you are asking about are from ISB Hyderabad there is a certain level of credibility to them. It’s a general assumption that an Institute as reputed as ISB Hyderabad offers the best courses in every field.

But then again a course with a good curriculum cannot necessarily be good unless it matches your inclinations and career prospects.

The most popular courses offered at ISB Hyderabad include PGP & PGPX courses, which are almost equivalent to MBA. There are a variety of other courses which can be chosen according to your own preferences. For detailed information contact alumni or check the university’s official website.

Which is better: MAIT CSE or Jamia mechanical?

AB
Aliyah Bose Posted On : October 6th, 2020
B.Tech from Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology (2020)

MAIT is ranked 41st for BTech engineering by India Today, and Jamia is ranked 28th for engineering by the NIRF in 2020. The total seats for CSE in MAIT are 240 and Mechanical in Jamia has 70 seats. The yearly tuition fee at MAIT is 1.15 lakhs and Jamia is INR 12,000.

Admission:

  • Candidates need to sit for the JEE Main examination for entrance into any of the colleges.

  • For MAIT, students need to go through the GGSIPU counseling, and for Jamia, students need to go through the JMI Delhi counseling.

In 2019 the closing cut-off ranks for the institute were as follows.

MAIT, CSE

42615 (Home State), 27611 (Other State)

JMI, Mechanical Engineering

41501

Placements:

MAIT:

  • The placement percentage of CSE at MAIT is 90%.

  • The highest salary package is around 25 LPA, and the lowest is 3 LPA.

  • The average salary package is 4-5 LPA.

  • Reputed companies like TCS, Infosys, Amazon, Accenture, Microsoft, and Wipro come for recruitment.

JMI:

For mechanical, placements are quite good at Jamia.

  • The mechanical department has a placement record of 70-80%.

  • More than 40 companies come to recruit students each year.

  • The average salary offered is around 5 LPA, and the highest salary that was offered in 2019 was around 12 LPA.

  • The companies that come for recruitment are L&T, Supergas, Hero, Blue Star, TCS, Wipro, Saint Gobain, Cummins, Siemens, Maruti Suzuki, M and M, and Anglo-Eastern.

Infrastructure:

MAIT:

  • At MAIT, the student to faculty ratio is around 70:1.

  • The library is massive, having access to hundreds of volumes and papers.

  • There are five canteens on campus, and the college has several sports facilities, including an indoor badminton court.

JMI:

  • The mechanical department at Jamia has its library and well-equipped labs.

  • The entire campus is Wi-Fi enabled. Medical facilities are available 24*7.

  • Each department organizes sports week, and the mechanical department also has separate canteens.

Although in terms of placements and infrastructure both the colleges are on par, there is a factor of affordability. Jamia has one of the lowest tuition fees in Delhi. However, the decision depends on the students who need to take everything from academics to cultural aspects of the colleges into consideration.
