I have 63% in 10th and 47% in 12th. Also, I got 59% in graduation. Is there any chance to get admission in IIM and FMS Delhi?

IIMs and FMS Delhi are the top management institutes in India, and they have very competitive admission processes. A high academic score can be an advantage but it is not the only criterion for admission. Admissions committees also consider other factors such as work experience, extracurricular activities, performance in entrance exams like CAT, XAT, or GMAT, and performance in GD and PI rounds.

Now based on the information you provided; your academic scores are below the average scores of the admitted candidates in these institutes. However, there are several factors that could improve your chances of admission. For example, if you have relevant work experience, achievements in extracurricular activities, a very high score in the CAT exam, a good GD score, and a really good and impressive personal interview, you could still be considered for admission.

So, the best thing for you right now is to focus on other aspects of your application such as your work experience, extracurricular activities, and performance in the entrance exams. Also, research the admission criteria and requirements for the specific programs you are interested in and try to meet them to the best of your ability. It is always a good idea to apply to several institutes to maximize your chances of admission.

I have 62% in 10th, 47% in 12th, and 45% in graduation. If I score equal or above 97%, will I get a call from FMS Delhi? I'm from the SC category.

Assuming that you have a graduation score greater than or equal to 45%, it is possible. But you will have to justify your academic performance in the interview and convince the panel that you will do exceedingly better than what your profile suggests. Considering the kind of candidates that FMS can choose from, it would take you quite an effort to do this.

It would be wise to keep your options open instead of putting all your eggs in one basket. Convincing the panelists is just one part of the story. You will then have to significantly transform your CV, become mentally prepared to be rejected by a few companies and crack the final process during your placements. So, you should take a couple of mocks or solve the CAT 2019 paper, understand the bracket that your final score will probably lie in, and then focus on those institutes.

Is MBA in marketing good in FMS Delhi?

Studied at FMS

MBA in Marketing is one of the greatest options available at FMS. Faculty members such as Prof Harsh Verma will provide you with the marketing expertise you seek. He teaches a wide range of subjects.

Dr. Ajay Pandit was also present during our term and was a jewel of a person. Prof Harsh Verma is a personal favorite of students because he does not teach in a typical way. He stimulates your mental process and makes you think. This improves your analytical capacity to approach a topic conceptually. I enjoyed learning about Brand Management, Consumer Behaviour, and Service Marketing with him.

Are the new IIM's good enough to compete with the older ones? Are they better than XLRI or FMS?

AB

The new IIMs still have a long way to go and it will take several years for them to reach the level of top B-Schools like XLRI and FMS. It would take them a long way to reach there. It’s only after joining a B-School, that you realize a B-School is as good as its alumni. Top B-Schools have a large alumni base occupying executive positions in top MNCs. This in turn improves the brand value of these institutes.

Additionally, there are several companies that visit only the top 4-6 B-schools for summer and finals. Once you conduct in-depth research you will realize how many CHROs & CEOs are from XL and FMS. New IIMs would have to struggle hard to reach that level. Companies have a fixed pattern for recruitment for summers and finals. They stick to the same pattern and thus visit the same institutes every year. This is exactly why companies go through the immense struggle of visiting a remotely located institute like XLRI because they are sure of its worth and credibility.

My friend got admission in the FMS and he is still thinking of dropping a year to get admission in the IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore or Calcutta. What should he do?

SS

IIM Calcutta (2019)

Well, it entirely depends upon your friend and his professional profile.

He can think of a reattempt if:

  1. He has a great academic record in X, XII, and graduation
  2. He has a work experience of at least 2 years at present.
  3. He is confident of scoring high enough to get a call from IIM A, B, C next year and convert at least one of them successfully.

However, he should thoroughly evaluate his chances of being successful in securing his place in either IIM A, B, or C. Also, will his/her profile be good enough next year? With the admission criteria changing every year, it's not advisable to drop an offer from one of the premier non-IIM B- Schools for CAT retake. The cost of dropping a year in terms of money, time, and work experience, in particular, should be thoroughly evaluated.

Drop a year only after careful consideration. Otherwise, it will be wise to join FMS and give MBA a shot.

I want to do an MBA either from FMS Delhi, JBIMS or TISS Mumbai because I can't afford a loan. Is it a wise decision? I'm a working aspirant.

Pursuing an MBA from a top college like an IIM can provide many benefits, such as excellent campus life, an increased likelihood of getting a desired job, and boosting the overall value of your career. It’s viable to obtain a loan to pay for it because the interest rates are often low, and there is a grace period before repayment begins.

IIMs should be given more priority than colleges like FMS, TISS, JBIMS, or XLRI as they have more brand value and can offer better opportunities in terms of networking and job prospects. However, it is a personal decision that should consider your career goals, financial situation, and personal preferences.

Apart from a high CAT percentile, there are many other ways to get admission into FMA, MDI and XLRI.

  • Good academics are very beneficial and always help in any college selection interview.
  • A well-made resume never hurts and makes you stand out from the rest of the crowd
  • Having a past of doing some volunteer work
  • Candidates that have genuine hobbies, internships, certifications, etc, up their sleeves also have improved chances of selection.
  • The most important requirement for selection is acing the personal interview. During the interview, you should confidently showcase your personality which is a perfect blend of hobbies and academics with clarity of goals.
  • Work experience is also important. Preferably 2 to 3 years.
  • Your confidence level also plays a major part in the selection.

All in all an all-rounded profile with the right mix of extracurriculars, hobbies, and academics will improve your chances of admission.

If I get an admission in FMS Delhi and I'm doing an MBA in finance, will my past academic records affect my placement at FMS? I got 77% in 10th, 68% in 12th, and 68% at engineering graduation.

You will probably face challenges in getting admission to FMS Delhi due to your academic records. There is a high level of competition, and a percentile score of 99.80 or higher will be needed to receive a call. Consider why you want to pursue finance as a career and examine your mindset and motivations in detail. Your past academic records can also affect placements, which means that your grades in 10th, 12th, and engineering graduation will play a role in your eventual job prospects after completing an MBA in finance at FMS.
