Is it true that the administration at XLRI Jamshedpur is tyrannical and makes life miserable for students there?

MC
Manyata Cheda Posted On : May 25th, 2023
Studied at XLRI Jamshedpur

Using words like "tyrannical" and "miserable" seems harsh. Your information source might have exaggerated the situation at XL. Compared to other B-schools, the students at XL enjoy similar, if not more, freedom. A student body has a say in negotiating with the administration, and they have been able to change administrative decisions in the past. The administration does play a role in maintaining discipline on campus, but students also have a responsibility to represent the school well. Overall, students at XL have a memorable experience, and administration interference in day-to-day life is minimal.

How is the executive MBA from XLRI?

AS
Ankit Sharma Posted On : May 14th, 2021
XLRI

The 1-year PGDM(GM)/GMP program offered by XLRI is one of the best MBA programs in the country. The duration of the program is 15 months out of which you will have to spend 12 months on campus.

  • The curriculum is similar to that of the 2-year long program. You will also have the same faculty. XLRI has one of the best faculty bases in the country.
  • You will get to be a part of the XL mafia, i.e. the extensive network of XL alums. They are recruited in top positions of many reputed MNCs. There are also a significant number of successful entrepreneurs. Such a vast alumni network definitely has its own advantages.
  • Since 5-year work experience is the least requirement, you will have peers from Marine Logistics to NGOs. As the curriculum is case-based, you will have the opportunity to discuss many cases with your peers from different backgrounds.
  • You will get to experience the overall XL culture. There are ample opportunities to interact with the students from BM/HR programs. These are one of the top MBA programs in the country.

Besides all this, Jamshedpur is a great place away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. You will definitely enjoy your time there.

Can I get into XLRI with 47% in graduation, but pretty good scores in 10th & 12th? I also have 2 years of work experience. What if I manage to get 99.9+ in the XAT?

SP

If your score is good in XAT, you will get the call. It is also good because the marks have a good amount of weightage in the final selection.

Most probably, you will be questioned if you have low grades in any of the examinations and all you need to do is, just satisfy the interviewers and prove to them that you are a good candidate and this would be enough to get you through.

If you have a score anywhere above 99.9 Percentile, you will get a call from XAT. You are much more than your mark sheets and XLRI values such things which are beyond scores.

What is the objective of admitting freshers in Ivy B-Schools like IIMs, FMS, JBIMS, SIMSREE, SPJIMR, XLRI, etc.??

MBA admission in Indian B Schools is a fairly weird process in comparison to that of foreign B Schools. In India, the admission process requires a candidate to have some work experience and in certain B-schools, it even carries a certain weightage. But during Final Placements, this scenario changes entirely as the recruiters prefer freshers over experienced candidates. The major reasons for this contrast are:

  • The recruiters offering Marketing roles are on the lookout for candidates who can initially go through a sales job for a few years. They believe that the route to Marketing is through sales only. Now Sales requires a lot of traveling that too to rural areas. The recruiters know that these tough job conditions cannot be undertaken by Experienced professionals and thus prefer freshers who they can mold easily.
  • The companies offering Finance roles know that the candidates with prior work experience won’t be working for the long hours they require them to. So they prefer freshers who can work long hours without complaining.

Recruiters are looking for candidates with work experience of not more than 11-12 months. Honestly, this strategy is illogical as a person with more work experience is bound to excel much better than a fresher, and restricting him from getting a job just because they cannot be exploited to the fullest extent is a bit cruel.

The scenario is pretty much the opposite in foreign countries that prefer MBA candidates with work experience only. This is because in India MBA is considered a way to become more employable or earn a fatter cheque. Whereas in the West, it is a means to upgrade your career and take it to new heights. The entire concept of MBA is at fault in India thereby this illogical strategy.

In my opinion, MBA candidates should have a work experience of at least 1 year, only then they can harness the MBA program to the fullest and not approach it just as a source of placements.

Which is better purely in terms of placement, XLRI BM or HRM?

VB
Viren Bhalla Posted On : May 20th, 2021
studied MBA from Xavier School of Management (2018)

Although choosing a course just based on placement records is not a good idea, there are some insights you must know before deciding.

  • Placement is for the first job which you might do for 2–3 years while your career will span for 30–35 years. You should choose what you feel you want to be doing.
  • You must have heard that HR roles offer you better work-life balance but it might not be true in every case. It depends a lot on the company, your manager, and your role. If work-life balance is your criteria, you might feel a shock when you join a company. HR might not have business targets but you may face other pressures.
  • Placements in any campus depend on your luck too. HR batch strength increase in XL might make the competition for the good roles a little higher because the number of HR roles is limited. BM batch is still divided amongst Fin/Mar/Ops camps giving them specific roles but the number of opportunities might be higher.

All in all, placements won't secure your future in any way if you choose a field where you aren’t interested.

How do I prepare for the XLRI HRM interview?

UB
Udita Banerjee Posted On : May 24th, 2021
MBA BM, Xavier School of Management

For preparing XLRI, HRM interview, you need to have a good command of the current budget-related issues. This could be done by reading the newspaper thoroughly and be up to date with the current affairs as they are the most predictable topics to be asked by the interviewer.

From the bachelor’s degree, select any two subjects of your interest and prepare them well. Try to improve the communication skills, be a good listener and a proactive person. Opt for coaching like CL for better guidance. Learn how to think analytically and logically and don’t rush to answers.

These are some points that you should keep in mind for the XLRI HRM interview.

Do students from lesser known colleges make it to XLRI?

MS
Meghna Kaur Saluja Posted On : June 14th, 2021
Studied Business Management at Xavier School of Management (2018)

The answer is yes, students from lesser-known colleges do make it to XLRI. Getting admission into XLRI depends on several factors. If you fit their profile then surely you will get accepted. The basic requirements include the following -

XAT Score

Work Experience

10th Score

Performance in GD

12th Score

Performance in Personal Interview

Graduation Percentage

Extracurricular Activities

The weightage of these factors varies every year. The marks obtained in the graduation helps in giving an edge during group discussions and personal interviews. Once a student clears all the factors and gets into the interview session, everything else is secondary. It all then depends on how well you perform and impress the interviewers. But if you are from a lesser-known or smaller college and are well prepared, then they will definitely consider you.

Students from various nooks and corners of the country get into XLRI. You should stop worrying about their college and focus more on their entrance exam, GD and PI.
