Will cutoff for PEC Chandigarh go down with addition of 175 seats?

SB
Sumanto Biswas Posted On : April 30th, 2021
B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering, Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh (2019)

Yes, there is news about the addition of 175 seats in PEC Chandigarh and many are thinking that the cut-off marks will decrease as a result. With the increase in numbers of seats, the cut-offs are supposed to go down but it might not decrease for popular branches like CSE, ECE, Mechanical. There might be a difference of a few marks for some of the courses, but other than this everything is likely to remain the same.

The table below shows the required cutoff for PEC Chandigarh in recent years.

Which branch offers more chances of upgrading to CSE in the second year at PEC Chandigarh?

RS
Radhika Singhania Posted On : April 30th, 2021
Studied CSE at PEC Chandigarh

The change of a particular branch takes place at the beginning of the second semester. In fact, it depends on how hard you have worked for it. There are several students from branches of ECE, Electrical, and Mechanical who have secured themselves an upgrade to CSE.

Thus, your branch does not affect anything and can be upgraded if you have good marks. Now, to acquire an upgrade, especially to a branch-like CSE, you have to be a 10 pointer. It is because you are required to compete with students from various other branches as well.

That means you have to work quite harder to achieve a good performance in your mid-semester examinations, quizzes, and end-semester examinations as well.

Should I take aerospace in PEC or CS in CCET Chandigarh?

KC
Khushi Chitra Posted On : May 4th, 2021

It totally depends on your career interest. In India, there are very few jobs in the aerospace industry than in Computer Science Engineering. However, you should definitely pursue ‘Aerospace Engineering' at PEC University.

Aerospace in PEC

  • Aerospace Engineering (PEC University) is an excellent choice. It has a good reputation, personal development opportunities, better placements, and experienced faculty members.
  • Companies providing placement are Airbus, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Bell Helicopter, Boeing, Honeywell Aerospace, Rockwell Collins, etc.

CS in CCET Chandigarh

  • Computer Science from CCET, Chandigarh, on the other hand, is not a good option. It is not as well-known as PEC University.
  • Campus placements are limited. CSE is now equivalent to MCA, and MCA graduates can apply for the same job as a Computer Science engineer.
  • Companies Provided placements are Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Cognizant Accenture, and many more.

Which is best for CSE: NIT Kurukshetra or PEC Chandigarh?

MA

NIT Kurukshetra and PEC Chandigarh are well-respected institutions in India, known for their high-quality engineering education. Both institutions have strong reputations and are considered to be among the best engineering colleges in India. One of my friends chose NIT Kurukshetra and has no regrets whatsoever to date.

You can consider the following points before choosing the college

  1. PEC is located in Chandigarh so students have better access to hangout places and enjoy a better city life than at NIT Kurukshetra.
  2. NIT Kurukshetra has excellent infrastructure and a very beautiful campus. PEC really lacks in terms of facilities and infrastructure.
  3. NIT Kurukshetra has excellent opportunities for CS placements and even the core placements are great.

Here is a comparison of a few statistics that might help you further make a well-informed decision.

Parameters

NIT Kurukshetra

PEC

Fees

1.6 Lakhs (BTech first year)

2.07 Lakhs (BTech first year)

Ranking

58 out of 200 in 2023

101 out of 200 in 2023

Highest CTC

INR 1.25 CPA

Rs 64.5 LPA

Average CTC

INR 13.89 LPA

Rs 13.5 LPA

Top Recruiters

ICICI Lombard, HCL Technologies, Microsoft, Adani Group

Microsoft, RBS, Goldman Sachs

The above statistics prove that NIT Kurukshetra has a slight advantage over PEC.
Moreover, it also offers the NIT tag. It ultimately depends on the individual's personal preferences and priorities, such as location, campus culture, and specific program offerings.

Which is better, IT at NIT Kurukshetra or CSE at PEC Chandigarh?

MA
Madhav Aneja Posted On : September 1st, 2023

One of my cousins was in a similar dilemma last year when she had to choose between PEC and NIT Kurukshetra. Both the colleges are premier engineering colleges offering excellent education and are head-to-head in most factors. However, you may want to consider the following points before making the final decision

  • In terms of placements and the faculty pool, PEC fares better than NIT Kurukshetra.
  • Established in 1928, PEC has a richer legacy than NIT Kurukshetra which was established around 1963.
  • NIT Kurukshetra has a bigger and more beautiful campus than PEC.
  • NIT Kurukshetra offers the much coveted NIT tag which PEC does not.

The final decision depends on personal factors like location and future prospects. If you are from Chandigarh choosing PEC will be better.

Can I get a hostel at PEC University if I live in Chandigarh?

SS
Shivashish Saha Posted On : April 30th, 2021
B.Tech CSE from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh (2020)

Yes, you can get a hostel at PEC University if you live in Chandigarh. But Punjab Engineering College has its own procedure to allot hostels to students.

  • As per University procedure, firstly University will allot hostel rooms to students living outside Chandigarh.
  • The remaining seats after the allotment will later be given to waiting list students including locals and students with Chandigarh Quota.
  • PEC has huge hostel promises and enough rooms for students. You do not need to worry about not getting the seats. One of my cousins who is a local is also staying in the PEC hostel.
  • You might have to wait a bit to get a hostel. Approximately it takes 2 weeks of time to allot rooms to locals.
  • You also have to submit a written application to DSA with attached address proof.

Therefore, yes Chandigarh locals get hostels. As PEC hostels are big enough to accommodate all students.

How would you recommend aerospace engineering in PEC Chandigarh for UG?

RS
Radhika Singh Posted On : May 4th, 2021
Studied Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh (2020)

Unlike many different branches available, you have to work harder if your decision is PEC Chandigarh.

  • The subjects taught to Aerospace Engineering by the faculty are extremely crucial as compared to the numerous advances in the same field.
  • It has a great lab where they are required to wind tunnels, both subsonic and supersonic.
  • You will have a variety of engines to inspect and observe, airfoil design labs, and several other experimental hikes.
  • In your 4th year, you will be provided flight training. There will also be internship opportunities in the second half of your 3rd year.
  • Now, when talking about the placements, there are almost no placements for this branch. Presently, only non-core branches are getting placement offers.

A subject like this will requires you to complete the post-graduation for better exposure. regardless of the university. One of my friends chose this branch not to get a job but to study it in detail and pursue it further in post-graduation.

You can go for it without thinking twice. But, you can only excel at PEC with complete hard work and dedication. It never fails to provide the best of all opportunities.

Lastly, if you did not know, Kalpana Chawla was one of the reputed alumni of PEC Chandigarh, which can most probably make your decision quite simpler too.

What should be done so that placements at NIT Hamirpur can be like that of PEC Chandigarh?

SS
Shubham Saxena Posted On : May 4th, 2021
B.Tech from Banasthali vidyapeeth (2020)

My brother is from PEC Chandigarh, so I might be able to share some facts with you. Some important factors regarding placements of PEC include the following:

  • PEC has an academic policy that requires you to complete a 6-month internship in an industry or a research laboratory during the fifth semester. It strengthens the industry-academia relationship while also securing good PPO. This policy does not apply to NITs.
  • PEC's alumni-institution relationship is one-of-a-kind because of its long history. Try to construct it at NITH so that in upcoming days it'll be fruitful.
  • A dedicated Career Development and Guidance Cell (former TPO) is required to contact and invite large corporations to the campus.
  • With the practical approach to teaching and the freedom to participate in extracurricular activities, PEC students have a lower academic load than NITH students.
  • The final but most important factor is the ability (not to be confused with talent) that the students develop here being a part of a club or society.

Above all, study hard to gain good core knowledge, use your nit tag, and try to land good off-campus placement offers. This will certainly change the atmosphere on campus and your college's image in the eyes of industry. The change will come gradually with time.

How is it possible that Chandigarh University students are getting higher or equal packages to PEC or UIET despite having such a low cut-off when compared to PEC?

AS
Abhay Sukla Posted On : May 5th, 2021
PEC Chandigarh

The package acquisition is not a college deed in the case of Chandigarh University. There are many factors that you need to consider whenever you want to compare placements in colleges.

UIET/PEC:

  • Both these are government colleges. UIET, being a new one is still rising and working. It has strict admission rules and academic procedures that follow AICTE’s rules.
  • It has an average of 100-120 students in every branch. The number of students is a bit lower in branches like Meta or BioT. So, you will see around 600 students in a batch of 20xx.
  • There’s no way anyone can get admission without clearing the counseling. There are no management seats and hence no pay to study. We should also note that UIET has no Home Quota.
  • This makes the admission more open to deserving candidates. Almost 80% of the present batch doesn’t belong to Chandigarh or places around.

CU or any other similar private college:

  • It might sound lucrative but the reality is that they don’t have any seat matrix. You can even check on a verified website, ask students and do your own research.
  • You will find that CU gives admission to N number of students where N is the number of students who can afford it.
  • The year 2018-19 saw 2000 Engineering students getting admission but the batch of 2020 had 2600 students in CSE with just 60 students in Electrical.

Placements:

  • UIET/ PEC: There are almost 70-90% placements in different branches. These numbers are now going down very drastically not because of the companies which offer placements, but because many students don’t want placements. UIET has funded more than 8 startups out of the college in the past 4 years. PEC also has a significantly greater number of placements. 20+ elite companies and other 50+ local startups visit both these colleges, along with few mass recruiters.
  • CU: Tough they claim huge campus placements, which is true, they have never displayed or claimed the people placed or even their exact placement statistics. CU holds 3-4 pool placements where anyone, even the ones outside the campus, can come for placements and if they get placed, they are said to be placed from CU. Moreover, the genuine placements are divided among engineering and MBA students. UIET doesn’t have MBA. CU hasn’t shared the average placement records either. They would probably be very low, seeing their records, maybe around 2-3L, but definitely not more than that.

Now that you know all the facts, you must also know that a college hardly matters. What matters the most is what you wish to make of yourself. You can get a 20-40L package from CU/UIET/PEC if you want to work for it. You can even become an entrepreneur.
