West Bengal’s decision to introduce a state-level medical entrance exam aligns with Karnataka's earlier resolution, approved on July 22, 2024.

New Delhi: The West Bengal Assembly has passed a resolution to discontinue the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions in the state, following Karnataka's similar decision. The state plans to introduce its entrance exam for medical students aiming to provide more opportunities for local students and address concerns about NEET's centralized format.
This move aligns with Karnataka's earlier resolution, approved on July 22, 2024. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court recently rejected petitions to cancel and re-conduct the NEET-UG 2024 exam after finding no substantial evidence of widespread cheating or question paper leaks. This ruling supports the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the central government which had faced criticism over alleged exam malpractices.
Over 23 lakh students participated in the NEET-UG 2024 exam. Concerns arose when 67 students initially scored a perfect 720 which is an unusual highest figure. After re-checking, this figure was adjusted to 61 top scorers.
Tamil Nadu had previously sought an exemption from NEET in 2021 citing disadvantages for rural students, but their attempts, including one in 2017, were unsuccessful. Now, with West Bengal and Karnataka opting out, these states are introducing their own entrance examinations, challenging NEET's nationwide standardization.
A Supreme Court bench, including Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, conducted a four-day hearing on the matter. The proceedings featured arguments from several lawyers, including Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for the Centre and the NTA, and senior advocates Narender Hooda, Sanjay Hegde, and Mathews Nedumapra.
