The UPES Dehradun plans to establish a new center dedicated to AI at its campus. The center will focus on AI research and practical applications, enabling students, faculty, and researchers to develop real-life technologies.
New Delhi: The UPES Dehradun has planned to set up a fresh hub of excellence dedicated to Artificial Intelligence (AI) at its campus. This center aims to facilitate the exploration of AI research and its practical applications, empowering students, faculty, and researchers to develop technologies that are applicable in real-life and various industries.
The focus of the UPES center will revolve around Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. The institute intends to furnish the center with cutting-edge servers, including GPUs and TPUs (transaction processing units), ensuring a top-notch infrastructure can accommodate more than 50 researchers working concurrently.
With these state-of-the-art facilities, the center will facilitate interdisciplinary research, consulting, and training opportunities, according to the institute's announcement.
The center of excellence will introduce comprehensive master's and research programs that include Data Science and AI, promoting interdisciplinary education. It will actively deploy these developed technologies in diverse sectors such as BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance), Healthcare, Defense, and Manufacturing. Drawing upon its internal expertise, the center will offer consulting services, continuous education, and management development programs.
Ravi S Iyer, Dean of the School of Computer Science at UPES Faculty, AI has emerged as a highly influential technology in various sectors, impacting the global economy, especially with the advent of advanced hardware.
Through the establishment of the Center of Excellence, the objective is to not only contribute to fundamental research in AI and related fields but also focus on their practical application, provide hands-on learning experiences for students, and foster collaborations with government and industry partners.
According to McKinsey's recent report on Generative AI, approximately 50% of current work activities have the potential to be automated within the time frame of 2030 to 2060. The report suggests that the midpoint estimate for this automation transition falls around the year 2045.
