UGC has introduced a new curriculum and credit framework for PG Programs to restructure the education system. The framework offers students with entry and exit options and more research opportunities.

UGC Launches New Curriculum and Credit Framework for PG Courses

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a new curriculum and credit framework for Postgraduate (PG) programs on June 14, 2024 on the official portal ugc.gov.in. The new curriculum aims to enhance flexibility and student mobility in PG courses.

As per UGC, the new framework aims to reform PG education by offering adaptable, student-centric pathways. These PG course frameworks have been made by NEP 2020. The Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are directed to implement these credit frameworks.

The new guidelines enable HEIs to create and execute PG programs that promote educational innovation and adaptability to changing academic and industry needs. This approach improves educational outcomes and prepares graduates for success in a competitive global environment.

What are the Benefits of UGC PG Framework 2024?

A few of the pre-requisites of the new guidelines of UGC are:

  • No Discipline-Specific Requirement: Unlike previous regulations, the new framework does not mandate discipline-specific prerequisites for admission into one-year or two-year PG programs.
  • Exit Option: Students enrolled in the two-year program can exit after the first year.
  • Credit System and Curriculum Content: The framework outlines the credit requirements and curriculum for both one-year and two-year programs.
  • Enhanced Flexibility: This initiative is part of UGC's efforts to provide students with greater freedom and choice in their academic pursuits, allowing for a more personalised educational experience.
  • Program Structure: A two-year postgraduate program, with research in the second, is designed for graduates who have completed three-year bachelor's degrees.
  • Research: Graduates who have earned four-year bachelor's degrees with Honours or Honours with Research can apply for a one-year postgraduate program.
  • Transition Between Programs: Students can switch between disciplines and select majors, minors, or alternative subjects according to their abilities and interests. They can also choose courses that align with their career objectives and choose between offline, online, or hybrid learning modes.

Expressing his views on new guidelines, UGC Chairman M Jagdesh Kumar states that "The framework, with no discipline-specific entry requirements, outlines the credits and academic structure for both one-year and two-year PG programmes. It provides an exit option after the first year in the two-year program. Flexibility and mobility are its key features."
