Prof. Soniya Nityanand Takes Charge As Vice-chancellor of KGMU Lucknow; Check Details Here

New Delhi: The King George's Medical University (KGMU) has selected Prof. Soniya Nityanand as its second female vice-chancellor following a 12-year absence. Prof. Nityanand is currently the director of the Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences.

She is the 12th vice chancellor of the medical university, after Prof. RK Dhiman, director of the PGI, who served as additional vice chancellor of KGMU Lucknow from July to August 2020.

Prof. Nityanand was appointed by Governor Anandiben Patel to a three-year position. Between March 2008 and February 2011, Prof. Saroj Chooramani Gopal served as vice chancellor. On August 9, 2023, the term of current KGMU V-C Lt Gen (Dr) Bipin Puri will come to an end.

Prof. Nityanand oversaw the haematology division at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences before joining the Lohia Institute.

The incoming vice-chancellor has received endorsement from the KGMU Teachers' Association. "Professor Soniya Nityanand, who received her MBBS and MD from KGMU, is receiving a Ghar Wapasi. The campus will hopefully grow under her direction, and we offer her all of our support," said Prof. KK Singh, the association's president.

Patient care, education, and research are the focus of 74 departments at KGMU, and there is a hospital wing with 4,500 beds. Every day, more than 5,000 patients enter through the doors.

The first medical school in the state is currently developing a second campus and forging research partnerships abroad.
