NIT Raipur to Establish Advanced Chip R&D Center Within Chhattisgarh Capital Campus

New Delhi: National Institute of Technology (NIT Raipur) has partnered with a Bengaluru-based company to establish an advanced chip research and development center in its Chhattisgarh Capital Campus.

The advanced chip research and development center, named “Vibram Silicon Hub”, will focus on the "POSIT system-based general-purpose graphics processing unit (GPGPU)." Dr Sonal Yadav, an assistant professor at NIT Raipur, will be the head of the center.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the institute, the POSIT number system works as an alternative to the "Floating Point number system" and purports to offer enhanced performance and accuracy for high-performance applications, particularly those requiring substantial mathematical computations.

He mentioned that GPGPU advanced chips are used in smartphones, laptops, desktops, servers, and various other digital devices. Furthermore, these chips play an important role in applications such as tsunami detection and satellite launches.

The official stated that the agreement was signed on March 20, 2024, between NIT Raipur Director N V Ramana Rao and Vijay Holimath, CEO of VividSparks from Bengaluru. He emphasized that GPGPUs compute mathematical operations for gaming, video processing, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, High-Performance Computing, and various other applications.

Dr Yadav and Dr Holimath spoke about the initiative that it will help in India's computational requirements but will also enable the center to export its research findings and products to other nations, thereby generating employment opportunities.
