Karnataka Removes SSLC, PUC ‘Supplementary Exams’; Introduces 3 Annual Exams From Session 2023-24. Check Details Here

New Delhi: In an announcement on Teacher’s Day, the Karnataka school education department has decided to conduct a ‘supplementary examination’ and instead introduce Exam 1, 2 and 3 for SSLC (class 10) and second PU (class 12) students of Karnataka from the academic year 2023-24.

It was earlier reported that the education department plans to introduce two supplementary exams for Karnataka SSLC, thus making three examinations each for classes 10 and 12.

The move is taken to reduce stress and anxiety among students and improve their education and employment opportunities. Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) — conducts board examinations that will soon issue a government order. The board had already introduced a second supplementary examination this year for PU students, wherein 1,21,179 students registered.

Karnataka SSLC, HSLC Exam 2024: Dates

Class Name of the Examination Date of Conduct of Examination
Class 10th Exam 1 March 30-April 15, 2024
Exam 2 June 12- June 19, 2024
Exam 3 July 29- August 5, 2023
Class 12th Exam 1 March 1- March 25, 2024
Exam 2 May 15- June 5, 2024
Exam 3 July 12- July 30, 2024

The board conducts one annual and supplementary examination for students in this new examination system. Ritesh Kumar Singh, the Principal Secretary of the School Education Department, said, “This examination system is creating more stress and anxiety in students. Due to this, the students’ knowledge retention, meaningful learning and academic progress are being hampered.”

Per the existing examination rules, if a student who has passed the 2nd PU examination is not satisfied with the marks secured in any subject, such student can reject the marks obtained in that subject in the annual examination and take up the examination once again. However, the marks obtained in the supplementary examination are considered the final marks without considering the marks obtained in the previous examination.

The new reform aims to improve students' scores by retaining the best marks in the first, second and third examinations and providing better opportunities in the selection process for further study or employment.

Th new system aims to help students adapt to their learning speed and reduce the stress caused by time limitations. Also, the board wants to replace ‘Supplementary Examination’ with the ‘Annual Examinations 1, 2, and 3’ system, thus giving new opportunities to the students to promote their overall performance and positive attitude.

The department in a press release stated, “The uniformity in content and difficulty level will be maintained in the question papers in these three examinations. Students will be given an opportunity subject-wise to choose the best score among the marks obtained in these three attempts. The students who join their next academic course late shall be provided with a ‘bridge course’, be it I PUC or at the degree colleges, in order to make up for the missed classes in the initial month.”
