IIT Madras Officially Inaugurates its First International Campus at Zanzibar; Read More Here

New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) Director Prof V Kamakoti has officially inaugurated the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus virtually in the presence of H.E Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar.

IIT Madras Prof V Kamakoti called the inauguration a historic event and credited the accomplishment of launching India's first IIT campus overseas to both the Indian and Zanzibar governments for expediting all official procedures within 6 months.

Speaking on this occasion, IIT Madras Director Prof V Kamakoti said, “The basic motivation for the opening of the IIT Madras campus abroad is the rapid internationalisation. Having a campus in a country abroad will bring in a much more diverse culture which will be a real turning point in the IIT system”.

“We are happy that we chose Africa. We need to go to a country where there is a need for an IIT and the country should support us. The Zanzibar government did all that was promised and has been very supportive”, he added.

IIT Madras to Offer 5 New Courses on Zanzibar Campus in 5 Years

IIT Madras Prof V Kamakoti shared, “We requested the public sector banks to treat the Zanzibar campus the same as IIT Madras and hand out loans to students who wish to study there”. IIT Madras expects to launch five new courses on the Zanzibar campus in the next five years.

He further added that Zanzibar government has approved more than 200 acres of property for the permanent campus, and the temporary site where lessons are held is well-equipped. The Zanzibar government is providing financial support to the campus.

As per the officials, classes at the Zanzibar campus began last week. For the current academic session, 50 students have been accepted for BS in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and MTech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science programs. The selection of applicants is done on the basis of marks secured in the eligibility test followed by a personal interview and feedback received.
