IIT Madras has announced the commencement of the online application process for its M.Tech. and M.A. programs for the 2026-2027 academic year on March 28, 2026. Interested candidates can apply directly through the official portal at iitm.ac.in.
The admission cycle follows a strict timeline to accommodate the recent GATE 2026 results (expected March 19). The online application portal will open on March 28, 2026, and will remain active for exactly one month, closing on April 27, 2026. Following the application phase, the institute is expected to release the first set of admission offers via the COAP portal in the second week of May 2026. Successful candidates will tentatively be required to report for admission on July 20, 2026, with the orientation scheduled for July 22 and the official commencement of classes on July 27, 2026.

For M.Tech candidates, a valid score from GATE 2024, GATE 2025, or GATE 2026. B.Tech. Graduates from any IIT with a CGPA of 8.0 or above (on a 10-point scale) are eligible for direct admission without a GATE score. A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, or a 4-year B.S./B.Sc. is required.
MA admissions open for candidates who have qualified for the XH (Humanities and Social Sciences) GATE paper in 2024, 2025, or 2026. The 2-year M.A. is offered in Development Studies, Economics, English Studies, and Public Policy.
IIT Madras has introduced cutting-edge M.Tech. streams including Robotics, Semiconductor Materials Technology, and Computational Engineering for Mechanical Systems. The fee is ₹300 for SC/ST/PwD and Female candidates, and ₹600 for all other applicants.
Eligible Indian Nationals in M.Tech. programs may receive a Half-Time Teaching Assistantship (HTTA) of ₹12,400 per month. All GATE-qualified aspirants must register on the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) in addition to the IIT Madras portal to receive admission offers.
