IIT Kanpur said the adaptive test format for JEE Advanced will be fully implemented from 2027 after approval from the Joint Admission Board (JAB), while a trial run will be conducted in 2026 on IIT Kanpur students.

IIT Kanpur is preparing to pilot a new adaptive test format for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced. The initiative aims to make the highly competitive engineering entrance exam more student-friendly and less dependent on coaching-based preparation.
The pilot study is expected to be conducted around the time of JEE Advanced 2026, with approval from the organising institute, IIT Roorkee. However, the new exam pattern will not be implemented in the actual JEE Advanced 2026 exam. Instead, it will first be tested on IIT Kanpur’s own students before any decision is taken for future exams.
What Is the Adaptive Test Model?
The proposed adaptive testing system would introduce a dynamic question paper format. Instead of all candidates receiving the same fixed set of questions, the exam system could generate questions based on a student’s performance during the test.
Key Features of the Proposed System
- Questions may be generated dynamically during the exam
- The difficulty level may change depending on how a student performs
- The system aims to assess analytical ability, reasoning, and conceptual understanding
Education experts believe that such a model could provide a more accurate evaluation of a student’s capabilities compared to traditional question papers.

Why IITs Are Considering Changes in JEE Advanced?
The proposal for an adaptive exam format was discussed during a meeting of the IIT Council, the apex body governing IITs. The idea was initially suggested by IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal, who raised concerns about the growing influence of the coaching industry and the pressure faced by students.
The council believes the new system could help:
- Reduce dependence on coaching institutes
- Encourage deeper conceptual learning
- Make the exam less stressful for students
- Ensure a fair and secure evaluation system
Pilot Test Planned Before Implementation
Before introducing the new format for all candidates, the authorities plan to conduct a pilot adaptive test. The trial will help researchers and exam authorities evaluate whether the model works effectively for large-scale competitive exams.
Officials have indicated that if the pilot results are successful and approved by the Joint Admission Board (JAB), the adaptive testing system could potentially be introduced from JEE Advanced 2027 onwards.

JEE Advanced 2026 Exam Date
The JEE Advanced 2026 exam is scheduled to be held on May 17, 2026, and will be conducted by IIT Roorkee. The exam is the second stage of India’s engineering entrance process and is required for admission to undergraduate programmes at the IITs.
The JEE Main Session 2 examination will be conducted from April 2-9 in two shifts. Only candidates who rank among the top 2.5 lakh in JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
