New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar has introduced a remarkable early career fellowship program that offers PhD students a generous stipend of ₹1 lakh. 

This fellowship opportunity will help Ph.D. graduates partner with IIT Gandhinagar faculty on research projects, making significant contributions to their respective fields. The last date to apply for the fellowship program is December 15, 2023.

What is the IIT Gandhinagar Early Career Fellowship Program?

IIT Gandhinagar's early career fellowship offers students the opportunity to work on research problems in a creative and interdisciplinary system. Selected candidates will not only have access to their department but also to the entire research facility and infrastructure of the institute. 

How will the student receive the Award/ Stipend?

From this fellowship, aspirants will receive a monthly stipend of ₹ 1,00,000, which comprises ₹ 90,000 for living expenses and an additional ₹ 10,000 for housing (HRA) if they choose not to utilize on-campus accommodation. Apart from this candidates will also be able to access a professional development grant of up to ₹ 2 lakh per year. This can be utilized during international travel to attend conferences, workshops, training programs, and more.

Individuals relocating from abroad have the opportunity to request travel reimbursement for themselves, their spouse, and dependents, as well as transportation expenses for household goods, capped at ₹1,00,000, provided that appropriate travel receipts are submitted. This reimbursement is applicable for economy-class air travel and is conditional upon the fellow's commitment to a minimum of six months of affiliation with IIT-Gandhinagar.

What are the Eligibility Criteria for Applying?

As per the eligibility criteria, this fellowship is designed for individuals who pursue an academic career. Aspirants who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis at an institution in India or abroad on or after January 1, 2023. Aspirants should note that the research work should be well-regarded and supported by scholarly publications. Aspirants who have submitted their thesis or plan to do so in the coming months can apply for the fellowship. Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) cardholders are both eligible to apply.

What is the Selection Process?

Below is the process that candidates need to look through:

• During the application process, candidates are required to work with an IITGN faculty member to create a research proposal in a specified format, detailing their research and career goals, which must be approved by the faculty collaborator. It is recommended that applicants reach out to the faculty member directly.
• Additionally, applicants must submit a personal statement outlining their ambitions and Fellowship objectives.
• Candidates who are part of IIT Gandhinagar may choose to collaborate with a faculty member other than their PhD supervisor, provided they share a common research interest.
• Each applicant must provide the names and contact information of three referees who can offer an impartial assessment of the candidate's suitability for the Fellowship.
• Applicants have the flexibility to select any discipline and submit a single application.
• Faculty members have the option to endorse more than one proposal.
