IISc Bangalore is inviting applications for PhD, Integrated PhD, and MTech Research programs for the academic year 2025-26. Admissions will be based on NET JRF / GATE and JAM / JEST scores for PhD & MTech Research and Integrated PhD programs respectively.

Eligibility For PhD and MTech Research
Applicants possessing a minimum of second class or equivalent in the following degrees are eligible to apply:

GATE / GPAT / NET JRF / other National entrance test passing certificate/score card should be valid as of August 1, 2025.
NET JRF includes - Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF, UGC-NET for JRF, DBT JRF, ICMR JRF, JEST, NBHM Research Award, and INSPIRE. Applicants must be qualified for the Junior Research fellowship (JRF) to be eligible to apply through NET JRF mode.
Candidates who have qualified only for Lectureship (LS) / Assistant Professorship / qualified under Category-2 or Category-3, are not eligible for admission to PhD and MTech Research programs at IISc.
Applicants applying through INSPIRE mode must have a valid provisional INSPIRE offer for consideration of their application at level II of the selection, issued by DST at the time of the Interview.
Applicants who have qualified in the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences 2025 (JGEEBILS) are also eligible to apply.
Candidates will be shortlisted for an in-person interview based on their performance in the National Entrance Test and/or the qualifying degree. The final selection will be based on the performance in the interview (in some of the departments, an aptitude test/ preliminary interview will precede the interview/ final Interview).
Eligibility For PhD and MTech Research (ERP Based)
- Applicants must have a minimum of second class or equivalent, the same as for the regular candidates.
- Qualifying in one of the national entrance tests like CSIR-UGC NET for JRF, UGC-NET for JRF, DBT JRF, ICMR JRF, GATE, and NBHM is desirable but not mandatory.
- Must have completed two years of full-time employment in the current organization after the completion of the degree.
- Candidates must be officially sponsored by their employing organizations.
Candidates will be selected based on their performance in the interview.
ERP is meant for:
- Professionals from R&D Organizations / Industries
- Faculty members from Engineering, Agricultural, Pharmaceutical, Veterinary, Medical Colleges/ Universities

Candidates will be shortlisted for interviews based on their performance in JAM 2025. Shortlisting for Physical Sciences is also done based on the JEST 2025 score. The final selection will be based on the performance in the Interview and combined performance in the JAM/JEST (as applicable).

The fee is non-refundable and any bank or payment gateway service charges must be handled by the applicant. Online payment can be made through net banking, debit card, credit card, or UPI.
All the regular PhD and MTech Research students who join the Institute are eligible for scholarships from MHRD/CSIR/UGC/ICMR/DBT/DST/AICTE/DAE (NBHM) depending upon their mode of entry. Scholarships from many Indian & multinational agencies, and business houses are also available for students. The scholarship amount may vary for different scholarship agencies as per norms.
IISc has many merit-based private/donor fellowships that provide enhanced monthly fellowship (up to two times) for PhD and MTech Research programs of IISc. For further details including entitlements, check here.
