New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Management, IIM Jammu celebrated International Yoga Day (IYD) at its Canal Road Campus on June 21, 2023, with the theme "One Yoga for One World". The IIM Jammu's Yoga Day 2023, "One Yoga for One World," was accompanied by the domestic tagline "हर घर आंगन योग" (Yoga in Every Home).
The primary focus of this theme was to highlight the numerous benefits of yoga and promote its inclusion in every household, institution, and community. The event commenced with Shri Sahil Mehra, a renowned Yoga Guru and the Chief Guest, lighting the lamp in the presence of IIM Jammu faculty including Prof. B.S. Sahay, the Director of IIM Jammu, Prof. Jabir Ali, the Dean of Academics at IIM Jammu, along with other officers, staff, and students.
The students then performed Saraswati Vandana, a traditional invocation to the goddess of knowledge and wisdom. The Yoga session began with the systematic practice of various "ASANAS," including standing, sitting, and lying positions, guided by the Yoga Guru and supervised by trained volunteers.
The Yoga Guru also captivated the participants by demonstrating some of the most challenging asanas. Following the yogic practice, a Yoga Quiz took place, with enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, and staff.
In his address to the gathering, Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director of IIM Jammu, highlighted the benefits of incorporating yoga into daily life and work. He stressed that yoga brings a healthy balance to both the body and mind, and explained how regular practice can bring about a transformative change in an individual's life.
Further, he credited the Honorable Prime Minister of India for introducing the concept of International Day of Yoga during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014, which has now become a global phenomenon observed annually on June 21, 2023.
During the event, Prof. Sahay recalled about the inauguration of "Anandam - Center of Happiness" at IIM Jammu, which was graced by the presence of Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal "Nishank," the former Union Minister of Education, Spiritual Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar from the Art of Living organization, and Shri Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
Expressing his deepest gratitude to Spiritual Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Art of Living for inspiring him to incorporate regular yoga practice into his life, he encouraged the faculty, staff, and students to embrace yoga as a means to unlock their hidden potential.
He concluded his speech by expressing gratitude to Yoga Guru Sahil Ji for his dedication, time, and effort. In his speech, the Chief Guest and Yoga Guru, Shri Sahil Mehra, encouraged everyone to embrace a healthy lifestyle and incorporate yoga and meditation into their daily routine in order to achieve harmony between the mind, body, and soul.
Expressing his joy and appreciation for the disciplined display of yoga practice by the IIM Jammu community during the event, he shared his own experience of practicing yoga for over a decade and fondly remembered his late Yoga Guru, Shri Sanjay Asimji.
Shri Sahil Mehra also discussed his research on yoga and his commitment to carrying forward his guru's legacy. The event witnessed active participation from the institute's faculty, officers, staff, and students.
Following the event, the Yoga Guru Shri Sahil ji was honored with a gesture of gratitude from the Director, who presented him with a plant sapling as a token of appreciation. Some of the distinguished dignitaries who attended the event include Prof. Jabir Ali, the Dean of Academics at IIM Jammu, Dr. Ashish Kumar, the Chairperson of Student Affairs at IIM Jammu, and Cmdr Kesavan Baskkaran (R), the Chief Administrative Officer of IIM Jammu.
Following the event, all participants were treated to a nourishing spread of refreshments, including sprouts, jaggery, coconut water, and fruits. These refreshments were served in traditional, eco-friendly leaf bowls made of "Pattal" leaves, accompanied by wooden spoons and paper straws.
Water was served in earthen pots and kullads. The coordination of the event was handled by the Student Affairs Office at IIM Jammu. The event concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
