New Delhi: IIM Indore celebrated the Hindi Diwas on September 14, 2023. Prof. Himanshu Rai, Director of IIM Indore, inaugurated the ceremony and Mr. N.K. Singh, Senior Journalist and Founding Secretary General of Broadcast Editors' Association attended the event as Chief Guest.
Speaking on this occasion, IIM Indore Prof. Himanshu Rai discussed the state, direction, and vision of the Hindi language. He explained the distinction between a country and a nation, stating that a country has a geographical land mass, people, and sovereignty.
In contrast, the country's culture features a fourth component. This is the foundation upon which we should build a new, just, and thriving world, and language is the cultural underpinning.
He said, “It is past time to begin focusing on the nation and the state of the Hindi language. Our culture has evolved alongside us. We as humans have personal ethics and ideals, yet we are unaware of social ethics. Love and respect do exist in society, but they are rarely expressed”.
“We are willing to struggle and have the ability to overcome obstacles, but we lack a plan for finding solutions. We don't want to solve problems; we want to destroy everything that stands in our way. We need to develop moral and social ideals. This is only possible if we keep connected to our roots, and Hindi plays an important role in this,” he further explained.
Prof. Himanshu Rai stated that Hindi and Sanskrit reflect the rich culture full of morals, principles, ethics, and values that bind our country together. “Acknowledging the state of our Hindi language will allow us to use our power in the proper direction, giving our lives meaning,” he said.
When discussing the importance of Hindi in educational institutions, he stated that it is critical to comprehend the distinction between being literate and educated. He urged the IIM Indore community to appreciate all Indian languages, not only Hindi.
"A person may not be literate or even know English, but if given a chance, he may be efficient in leadership, decision-making, risk management, and even have a solution-oriented cognitive process," he said.
Mr. N.K. Singh shed light on the significance of Hindi as a language and its impact on numerous fields on a global scale. He shared that we frequently construct a set of norms that determines who our icons are and, as a result, generate a process for identifying these symbols.
Despite the fact that 75% of people in the country understand Hindi, the language has yet to gain the respect and status that allows us to show our affection for it. We need to level the playing field between rural and urban, rich and poor, educated and illiterate people based on their language.
He emphasised the importance of having a reasonable and fair system that allows us to identify our symbols in an entirely different way through their acts rather than the words they speak, citing how market forces impede our brain process and prevent us from thinking sensibly.
It is time to foster dynamic thinking, open our minds to all Indian languages, and accept virtuous individuals, he stated, because knowledge and competency are determined by a person's reflexes and aptitude rather than the language he speaks.
On this occasion, the 2022 edition of IIM Indore's Annual Hindi Magazine "Gyaan Shikhar" was also released. The IIM Indore Director and the Chief Guest also congratulated the contributors who delivered outstanding essays.
