IIM Ahmedabad Alumni Urge Director to Implement Reservation Policy; Check Details Here

New Delhi: In a letter, a group of alumni of Indian Institute of Management (IIM Ahmedabad) encouraged the institute's director, Bharat Bhasker, to apply the union government's reservation policy in courses and faculty promotions.

Twelve alumni of IIM Ahmedabad claim that the IIM Ahmedabad PhD admission advertisement for 2024 does not incorporate the provisions of the central government reservation policy on higher education for candidates from marginalised parts of society, i.e. SC, ST, OBC categories.

These policies strive to address past disparities and make opportunities available to all sectors of society. IIM Ahmedabad, like other Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), has long been in the forefront of debates over the application of quota regulations.

The reservation policies are meant to promote social justice and improve marginalised community representation in higher education institutions. Quotas for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) are common in Indian reservation systems.

The alumni's letter appears to be advocating for the following:

  • Inclusion of Reserved Category Students: Implementation of reservation quotas in the admission process to ensure that students from SC, ST, OBC, and EWS backgrounds have fair access to education at IIM Ahmedabad.
  • Faculty Diversity: Ensuring that faculty promotions at the institute consider diversity and include representation from underrepresented groups.
  • Affirmative Action: Recognizing the importance of affirmative action in addressing historical disadvantages faced by certain communities.

“We requested and demanded policy implementation long before the IIM Act was passed in 2017. Most IIMs and other higher education institutes, such as IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IISc (Indian Institute of Science), and others, have adopted the central government's reservation policy for doctoral programs,” the letter read.

"This strategy has been deliberately implemented at IIM Raipur, where you have served as director for several years," they continued.

IIMs must provide 15%, 7.5%, and 27% reservation in admission for candidates belonging to the SC, ST, and OBC categories, respectively, under the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act 2006.

The CEI (Reservation in Teacher Cadre) Act of 2019 provides faculty members in these categories with equal opportunities for advancement. The alumni members also forwarded their letter to the President, who was recently designated as the IIMs' visitor following the modification of the IIM Act in 2017.
